I'm sure this has been done before but I've decided to look seriously at a hd cam for the bike.

Having looked at the go pro web site can anyone explain to me in SIMPLE terms what the differences between the Hero 3 black white and silver cameras?

Functionality.

The top end ones have more functions, better HD / Resolution, more compatability with other stuff in the GoPro range (remote control etc)

If you want basic push the button when you start and again when you stop in reasonable definition (good enough for home TV) then the basic model will do it.

If you want to turn camera on and off on the move (safely!) have wider screen and movie definition, possibly go 3D etc, then go for the top of range.

I have the Hero2 and it is basic but brilliant.

think of it in terms of gold, silver and Bronze.

ie, black Silver and White.

Black has the highest pixel rate, and highest options ie. 12mp 60FPS, silver is 11mp and but white is only 5mp.

There are other differences, in terms of still pictures etc.

compare is available here --- http://gopro.com/hd-hero3-cameras

I think on the black model the frame rate can be adjusted significantly allowing you to do ultra slow motion footage.

I have the original HD hero and it is brilliant.

Any time you go out and use it, you end up with GIGABYTES of data. You then spend three weeks editing everything to make a short movie of about 5 mins.

Soon, you realise that your ipad won't do 1080p so well, so you edit everything to 720p...

After a bit you realise that there's no point in filming at 60fps because there's nothing (possible except for a prang) that would be worth viewing at 60fps so you end up filming at 720p and 30fps, which means less data to edit and store afterwards.  This means that you spend less on HDD and NAS etc. and the quality of movie that you can make is still brilliant.

I am desperately trying to avoid buying a black edition one, and honestly the only reason to get one would be for the 120fps filming (which means you'll need a handful of BIG class 10 SD cards) or the cinema resolution recording, which my tv won't support anyway.

Advantage of a silver would be the remote control, but apparently the battery doesn't last so well.

I dunno....

If you use it for something other than biking, then it could be worth the investment... But all that really silky smooth slow motion stuff you see on the gopro website is all software!

Ros +1. I've got the Go Pro black version, after someone nicked by original Go Pro . Honestly, I wouldn't bother with the Black version. The wireless thing is a bit of a gimmick and you end up with very limited battery life (even with the Bac Pac). On my original, the battery with Bac Pack lasted just about as long as the 32G card which last year in the European Alps was a good days' ride.

The original Hero GoPro is s great bit of kit, I've never had the opportunity of comparing it against the  latest model Black or otherwise, but it does seem that with the extra features comes a pay off in that it now requires more complex editing facilities in order to deal with captured film.

I'm no expert but am beginning to think that my old original GoPro is still about as good as I need for use on the bike...BTW, thanks for the explanation Ros, as you could have just saved me some money

I've got the original Go Pro and the HD Hero. The originals can still be bought for about £180 which isn't too bad.

The quality is extremely good, amazing and Go Pro have come a long way since their earlier cameras but at that price I would difficulty justifying it - particularly as I went out today with my bike video camera today and forgot to clean the lense before filming - opps!!!!!!!!

Have you tried the Contour +2?
With that you get GPS also, so you know where you are and your speed an altitude.
