the aluminium on the gtr has been painted by the factory an aluminium colour believe it or not, this is to reduce corrosion, just thought id let you know as the abrasive ali cleaner will strip the paint off and then you will be polishing the part every year

keith

the more you polish the better the shine i prefer polished ali as opposed to painted ali.which is how i had my 2010 gtr ,think it looks much better heres a pic of the stripped and polished footrests / plates from my old bike

I've had this exact conversation with other members of the Kawasaki Triples Club on numerous occasions.

Some are concerned about polishing ally components on their bikes , and I say they shouldn't be, obviously high polished finishes on 70s bikes isn't really "de rigueur" but a gentle level of polishing can produce a nice finish, close to the original.

Be warned not to try and lacquer the finish after polishing as it will eventually develope small white spots behind the lacquer which is basically dampness, I know of guys who have even cling film wrapped fork legs after polishing and then applied lacquerin an attempt to gain that 'original' finish. The only way to get close to tha original finish is to wheel/linish wax polish and then cut back with Scotchbright

Its also true that 1970s Triples generally don't do as many miles as a modern day GTR and consequently wouldn't need as much upkeep

A polished ally finish always looks good to me....plus I reckon it shows that you care about your bike.

i always strip and polish any ali i think will benefit the look of the bike ,grab rails foot pegs/heel guards.once i have them polished i just keep ontop of them once a week is ample ,i never put laquer ontop of polished ali.i prefer the look but thats just my opinion.

I don't have a duvet in the Rev Shed, I reckon a duvet could absorb moisture.. good air circulation and 'greenhouse' type heaters under the bikes works very well for me

Well that tells me what my 2007 with 50K and some scuffs and dings is worth doesn't it.
Personally I think he has the price too low or there is something wrong with it but I don't really care as I'm not selling mine.

Hmmm, I like the polishing idea.... Beats the scuffing that appears after 20k.

Also Boomer - what ya been doing with it?  You turned into a washer and polisher?

That leads me to the question...... What's the highest mileage GTR around at the moment? Either pre or post 2010.....

Neil, that's an interesting question.  I'm the GTR is fit for a lot of miles as I intend to keep it a long time.

My blackbird I had for 9 years, got it with 4k on the clock and sold it with 72k and only ever missed a beat when the reg/rec went so I'm hoping the GTR is as good.
