My 'spare' sat nav mount arrived this morning. Was (am) tempted to be bone lazy idle and just charge from the cig lighter accessory socket. Then I did a search here and it seems that I have spare power leads tucked away waiting to be used (2010 bike). Seems a simples job even for a numpty mechanic like me. Also one of my Hein Gericke bargains was a heat shrink tubing grip kit. Never used h shrink before (told you I'm no mechanic) so I assume its just a case of wacking the old hair drier on it and bobs your uncle?
So following Kwikfux wiring d /gram I can cut the bullet connectors off, splice the cables, solder, and heat shrink. Am I missing something...?

Why not just put a couple of connectors on your Sat Nav leads?  Far easier and removable later.

You can also make a harness to clip onto the connector and run more than one thing off it if you don't cut them off

For heatshrink, forget the hairdryer and use a lighter.

You can get bullet connector separators which I what I would use.

Actually I lie. I would use a fuzeblock

yer see thats WHY I posted :-) Okay agreed - better idea, so, how would i go about making a 'harness'...?

As there is this aux power lead, (only on with ignition right?) and the aux socket, cant think its worth getting a fuzeblock?... maybe I'll change my mind after Ive had the bike a while....

Depends on how many powered farkles you intend to add. I though the same as you once ...

All I did was get 3 wires for each (live and neutral) crimped together and placed bullet connector on one end into aux socket - bullet connectors on ends  then bullets onto Sat-Nav/Grips/Cruise Control.  All work fine.

You can always shrink wrap the crimped/bullet ended connection!

makes sense - many thanks. just did a quick google, seems there are 2 sizes of jap bullets (dont mention the war...) 3.9mm and 4.7mm
I guess they'll be 3.9 on the gtr....?

kwarrgtr.... follow winstons advice and don't cut the cables bullet connectors are what you need female  (red) size 22-16 and male (blue) size 16-14 are good, try Maplins if you are stuck...or halfords...you may also need some cable which is in small packets at Maplins

here's a couple of pics which show a home made harness which is just cables zip tied together in this case at the rear of the GTR from the two feeds under the seat catch.. hopefully the pic will help to explain

And here's my Fuzeblock on the bench awaiting installation...its shown with my Starcom  comms

I hope this helps

so..... (sorry to be PITA) once I got the conectors and crimped them on the sat nav cable, I just plug and play into the pictured connectors in this thread.?....

Do I need a specific size bullet? Or will any size fit into the male/female i'm splicing into?

You need the correct bullet or female sleeve - make sure you get poitive and negative on the right bits of wire!

But yes.  Just plug and play!

yeah, I haven't actually wired in the Fuzeblock onto this GTR, I just used the rear aux power leads to power the Comms, and the front aux (under glove box and potentially a right sod to find) for the Sat Nav docking/charger mounting.

BTW when you locate the front Aux leads they can be very short i.e not much to get hold of, hence this is why its better to plug straight onto them.

I suggest you use a red female bullet connector for the pos+ power lead and alternative coloured male bullet for earth, its safer that way

Lots of pictures of the 2010 model aux leads and how to get them on my site if you want to take a look - http://www.trackandrace.com/workshop and follow the links to the GTR bit.

But, and maybe I am missing something here, every SatNav lead I have ever used ends in a male cigarette lighter socket that contains a voltage transformer. If you cut that off, and wire into the bike direct, you will be feeding 12.5V ish into the unit that normally requires about 7V. I doubt it will last long.

65,000 miles now. Loving this bike.

Well, my Zumo 550 came with 2 different cradles. One with a suction cup and a male lighter socket plug (if you want to use it in a car) and the other one with a lead to hard-wire to the bike. I guess they put a transformer into the latter to prevent what you describe from happening.
The later you brake the longer you go fast.
