O.C.

There are obviously a number of members here who have experience of 'on board filming'.

It's an area that interests me and I wonder if it might interest others too. In which case maybe we could share some skills, unless like me, you don't really have any !.... in which case we can look and learn.

1, What types of video cameras are best, are they better mounted on bike, clothing/helmet
2, Which editing site is recommended, I know of this one

http://vimeo.com/

3, Costs and ease of use
4, Pitfalls

There's nowt like watching a well produced on board bike video for getting the pulse racing, apart that is, from actually participating on the ride itself

Any thoughts ?

i've consider many time's getting a bike cam. love the idea, but I think it would make me grow some "horns" and do some posing. remember this clip I posted a short time ago of the gtr1400 in "chile" ok he may have got his " line" wrong, or the road service at the exact point he lost grip was suspect. but can't help thinking he was also posing for the bike cam :-\ which probably contributed with him riding above his capabilities. here is the clip just in case you haven't seen it!

ive been researching this matter recently having been playing around with bullet cams attached to the bike fed into a recorder , using my home camcorder mounted on a bracket ect. None of them have given me the results i wanted, got to be waterproof as well.

Ive decided to get the Gopro camera , it has a really wide field of view 170 degrees which is important on a bike , not too expensive at £250. Ive just fitted a ram ball mount and camera screw  in my left controls ready to accept it.

have a look at Valerios video of this camera , if you see his other videos you will see some footage

wha a brill idea that is?,didnt know that they did those onto ya res tops!!!,.
ive got a drift x170 hd that i use mainly for off roading, used it a few times on the gtr,use a ram mount,(got a short one also a longer one,can be positioned behind the screen with almost no wind noise, used my camera on the short one (in video mode) quite surprised with it but it is a anti vibe one,but with the long arm it tends to vibrate when accelerating but fine whilst normal riding.
but well impressed with tha  :)

O.C.

The mounting would seem to be a critical area, as any vibration would spoil the footage, also there is obviously a safety element to be considered.

I hadn't seen this clip from Valerio although I have of course seen several of his other clips of other attachments to his bike elsewhere, the idea of fitting the Hero camera to the Res was definitely not one that had occured to myself, I'm not sold on the idea to be honest, and think that a ball mount or other attachment is more prefferable, but hey that's just me.

The Hero camera comes with loads of sticky mountings and various bracketry and seems to be a popular camera of choice, appearing on various T.V action films.
I will play around with the Hero fittings on my bike to see if I can find an alternative fitment... I'll post pics when I've finished messing about  ;D [/

i thought the resevoir mount was a terrible idea, i posted it just so you could see the camera , not so much where it was. He also mounts it on his tank on a rotating post which is probaly the most stable place  , im gonna try my ram mount attached to the left lever bracket and see how that goes

I used the suction mount on the flat of the fairing and it stuck like wet sh*t to a warm blanket.  Solid - no vibration great footage (I do need to work pout the editng and publishing then you can see the result!

I have the GoPro HD but not used it in anger TBH. From the little I have used it, it is superb. I do intend to get a bullet HD one when i can find a decent one at a reasonable price.

I stuck my GoPro under the N/S mirror with the self adhesive pads which came with it. Never had any issues.

Wasn't there some other thread recently about this? I may be thinking across forums of course...

Anyway, GoPro is very popular. I don't have anything at the moment, but am considering getting something for daily commute idiot footage and then pleasure footage too. Someone made a comment that they use one of these cameras to take stills on their travels. They have some mode where you can take a still photo every couple of seconds or so (automatically) - camera mounted on your helmet. This sounds quite interesting as although you'll get lots of crap photos, you'll also end up with a handful of nice ones, depending on where you've ridden.

the Go Pro will take stills and recurring still shots too

There are quite a lot of these types of cameras available on the market, and I can say that even the 'keyring' type can produce good film footage at a very a££Specs: here.

One of these was used to good effect on a classic bike where mounting isn't always easy...in fact it was attached by velcro to a fork leg....and worked really well  :o
