1400GTR Discussion / Re: FJR versus GTR 1400

OK, Thanks guys and Ant for your input.  That's the problem each bike has a trade off. I will have to decide which is the best to live with.

Apart from the noise, I find the FJR an excellent bike.  I need to get a GTR for a weekend. A test ride from the dealer is not long enough.

1400GTR Discussion / FJR versus GTR 1400
November 30, 2014, 05:01:15 AM
About 12 months ago I was trying to decide if I should buy a Yamaha FJR or the GTR 1400.  After much deliberation I decided to buy the FJR. The bike has performed brilliantly in most aspects and probably one of the best sport / tourers I have ridden.

However, There is an issue with the bike that has make me decide to sell it.  Apparently the gear box has square cut gears and they make a terrible whining sound through all gears. It sounds ok at highway speed but very noisy when riding through the hills, going up and down gears. I am not the only person disappointed with this aspect of the bike, there are plenty of postings on the forums.
Not everyone dislikes this gearbox noise, but a lot do, including myself. The FJR forum members say it is caused because the gears are square cut.  The sound is like a car when it goes in reverse quickly.

My Question is this:  Has anyone had any experience like this with the GTR 1400 as far as gearbox noise goes?  I like the GTR 1400 as a sports tourer but I don't want to make the same mistake as I did on this one.

A few years ago I had a Honda ST1300 and the gearbox on that bike was very smooth and quiet.

Any experience from member would be appreciated.

Thanks guys for your input. A long test ride is the next step. I will report back when I have had a ride.

Is the adjustment on the ratio of front brake a user setting or does it have to be done in the workshop?

1400GTR Discussion / Linked braking question
October 31, 2013, 03:52:24 AM
I am currently looking to purchase a FJR or a GTR 1400.  I very much like the GTR however, I have a concern. I have read some articles where the GTR can be a pig when using the rear brake because the percentage of front braking with the linking system is too great. Some people have said that this has been a problem if a little rear brake is required in a bend or when coming up to the lights to make a stop.

I understand that you can't believe everything you read on the internet but I would be interested in the views of riders within this forum on there experiences with the linked braking system.

Thanks guys - sounds encouraging. I could not flat foot my st1300 and I managed ok. I was just a little concerned with this bike being a little taller.

I had a Honda st1300 for a few years. I am now looking at the GTR 1400. The seat height is higher than the St1300.

I had no trouble with the Honda but I am a little concerned with the GTR.

Has anyone with a short inseam had any experience with this bike?

Thanks Guys,

The MC Enterprises cage looks like the type I want. The protection for the front and rear looks very good. I know it is not if but when it gets dropped.

HI,

Can anyone recommend a slide protector that will protect the fairing and the panniers in the event of dropping the bike.
