1400GTR Discussion / Re: starter relay
July 12, 2017, 10:42:31 AM
2008 ,I purchased her new, no one else has ever rode her. 36000 miles, had many good european trips and memories. I ve just booked it in with the local dyno guy who I trust,he is having a look. I spend most of my spare time rebuilding and riding old Triumphs, I know what Im doing, but this electrical prob has me stumped.

1400GTR Discussion / starter relay
July 11, 2017, 11:13:17 AM
Posted here last october when starter relay  and plug melted. I changed it but a while later the rectifier went. Thought I had discovered root cause of the problem.
then it went  second time.
Checked voltage and charging. Checking wiring as much as could , dont think starter is sticking. Really at a loss what to do next, reluctantly part ex is an option. Much as I dont want to part with her, will not go touring on a bike with an issue like this.
Started carrying spare starter relay and tools to change if (when?) it goes again.

Mines just done it for second time. Already changed the rectifier, checked voltage and charging. Really at a loss what to do next. Stareted carrying spare starter relay and tools to change if (when?) it goes again.

Steve, I suppose some water ingress could have taken place, but I don't know if that would damage the rectifier

It sounds to me like you have got to the root of the problem already.  Hope the Kawasaki sourced part isn't too expensive

I know sometime has passed , sorry not been on here a while.
My repair worked - for a few months, then the rectifier failed! Replaced it and she ran for another few months, a few weeks back total electrical failure again ,had to be recovered. Starter relay had melted again! Now it could be the old rectifier damaged it before it totally failed but a pal thinks it more likely too much current through relay which means maybe starter sticking in mesh and back charging to relay. Certainly seemed to work ok before ,no noises or anything .the saga continues!

1400GTR Discussion / Re: Clutch prob
March 18, 2017, 08:55:45 PM
Thanks for tips, I'd  thought maybe one or other scored,so in desperation going to order  a new slave cylinder Monday, try that first. Would explain lack of fluid loss.
Let you all know in due course.

1400GTR Discussion / Clutch prob

Remember some posts on here a few years ago with similar problem but regarding altitude.
I've Been having a reoccurring problem with clutch last few months. Lost the hydraulic pressure one night.
Fitted new slave and master cylinder seals and new dot 4 fluid.
Month or two later lever almost to bars again. I bled it again .this has happened four times now, no apparent  leaks or fluid loss. Any ideas??? Bike is a 2008  and I've had it from new.

No Steve, it isnt a common problem, but what is the history of your bike ? Age ? Mileage?  Etc,,  [/

It's one of the first 2008 models (A1).
I purchased it new, done only 36,000 miles as I have other bikes and used it mostly for touring holidays. No one else gave ever rode her.
Last eight months she's lived outside under a cover as garage being rebuilt, wondered if despite the cover some waters got in somewhere.try to use her once a week or so to keep her dried out though.

Spot on!
Found starter relay/fuse  assembly  completely melted.
Just purchased one on flea bay, but struggling to find the (red) plug that goes on it. Have to try Kawasaki dealer in the week.
The ignition switch is still faulty so need to strip that out too, don't know if it was coincidence all going at once or not.
Still Have no idea what's caused  the problem.is it common?

General Discussion / Switch failure
October 22, 2016, 08:43:54 PM
Switched on today, fired her up and then she died, display dead too.
Switch will turn all the way round doing nothing and there is a burning smell from battery area ,so suspect something's burnt out. Any one any ideas?

Similar thing happened two years ago and turned out to be a blown fuse behind battery that I didn't know existed! This time is something more serious.
Mybikes a 2008 A1, one of the first. Been told switch spring was too weak on this year , but suspect more than that .any ideas or experiences gratefully received.

I use one for my zzr and even at virtual ground level it bothers me about over balancing and dropping the bike whilst putting it on, last year my bike went for a dyno session, the operator started my bike put it into 1st gear and walked with it through the bollards outside his unit weaved through the other bikes and straight up which was already off the ground, I was truly gobsmacked  :cool2: as this manouvre would have taken me all day and I would have shat myself doing it but it took the guy seconds.

Do any of you guys use a ramp ? if so what's the best technique ?

I've a ramp, I use it for my other bikes (a ZRX and numerous old british bikes) but shied off putting the GTR on it -its rated to about 250 KGs and the GTR is way over that.-Be OK working on the ramp  but not pumping it  up.

1400GTR Discussion / SHAFT DRIVE
March 04, 2014, 09:49:10 PM
Hi
I am not happy with my shaft drive assembly. There is (I think ) excessive backlash and its clonking a bit.
Anyone had one apart or any ideas? I service and repair all my bikes so I'm up to it ,just looking for info.
(2007 model)
Any info appreciated

Yes Steve it was going to be expensive. Both bearings on the drive shaft had gone and the gearing had also been damaged. The total cost of repair with Labour fixed at 6 hours was going to be £1200, plus it was also due a service in 500 miles. So that would have been another few hundred.

BK gave me a good deal AND they are transferring ALL my extras over to the newer one.

So they are keeping baby and going to get it repaired. Im getting the reg transferred over before I pick her up.. Will be in the next 2 weeks.

It was a hard decision to make. I did look at this 10 plate one when I took baby in.. I always thought it looked like a brown, but close up it does look really nice..

It has full Kawasaki Service and BK are going to give it a full service before I collect it.

Im having concerns about my shaft drive (08 GTR),,excessive back lash in it , Ive only done 26000 on her. I do my own maintenance so need to take a look before next long trip.

Just returned from a 2650 mile trip in Europe. Cruising at 70/75 two up with full luggage I returned 62.4 mpg on my 08 model. My pals 2012 did virtually the same. Thats about 240 miles per tank including the reserve! Obviously if your charging about it drops a lot . Generally in Uk i regularly get 53 mpg
