Introductions / Re: Bought my "Snotmobile"
July 15, 2013, 01:18:33 PM
Ah well - seems me and the GTR never did quite gel....

Could well be the weather since I bought her as the storm last Autumn started when I ordered her, but I have now changed and got a Thunderbird Storm - for those of you who are wondering, yes, I ordered the Storm at the start of the heatwave!

As the weather spent so long being so bad I had to move to a car commute, so I've reset the expectations from my bike and gone for something easy to ride that shouts at people

Good luck all, and if you're enjoying the weather I will take sponsorship not to buy another GTR

Note to self - on being burgled first pop outside and make a note of all corners, edges, thorns or vaguely scary things, document fully, get ratified by insurance company, logged with police in order to ensure all officers have relevants warnings... Call police quoting site reference for h&s compliance...

Actually, sod it, burglar's probably a lovely chap who's hard up, good luck to him!

You have no idea how relieved I am to see the clips where those stunts worked - unbelievable  :biker3:

Nice one Martin!

Green with envy, always wanted to try as it is the perfect way to develop your understandig of the bike's limitations and to have fun, if it floats your own personal boat!

I think having given this careful consideration... if you like track days, enjoy a challenge and want to experience the thrill of varying conditions this one looks like it ticked all the boxes in style.

Love the video setup you've got and thanks for the posting :)

To those who don't think it's a good idea - congratulations for not booking this trip

Not a fan of top boxes, am a fan of Ventura which I've used for commuting - I have posted photos before, I'll try to dig out, hardly David Bailey, but the 10 second on and off with little impact to the lines is a big plus in my world!

Our lounge is about 15' X 26' we use the wood burner to supplement the central heating, and leave the door to the hall open to let the heat around the house.

The outside vent was drilled during the install, just a small hole through the back of the fireplace.

Running full blast it makes way too much heat, but you do race through the fuel then.

As far as my asthma goes I don't think it's the damp from the vent, and you only really get smoke on lighting, so I try to steer clear until the chimney heats up, I actually think you get an odd smell when running really hot, I suspect it's from the dust literally being baked off into the room - hopefully most installations wouldn't have such a dusty house, but with an aga and afghans.....

If you do get one you have to get an ecofan! I think it does make a difference, but many don't, but they are so cool

We converted from an open fire to a woodburner.

It's a fairly aggressive change as most fireplace openings are nowhere near big enough, we've gone for an 8kw fire, but for 12kw you're definite;y going to be hunting the space.

Having said that, I took out the fireplace myself, the structural space in your fireplace is probablt just about adequate, most fireplaces will fill in to shring the hole down to size.

Things to bear in mind:

Woodburners are deemed more environmentally friendly, so if you go that way you theoretically can't go back to an open fire;
As a fire source they will need a direct outsode vent, although not large, and vertainly not a chinmey, you will notice the draught at times, well, the boss will!
As an asthmatic, I still notice the impact compared to central heating, and by the end of the winter my chest is getting desperate to miss the open fire - I am a serious asthmatic, so you may well never notice

Do I regret changing? No, they're great fires, far cleaner than open fires and always good to look at, but be aware, check the dimensions of the fire you want and remember you will ideally want 8" all the way around, 4-5 possible at the sides, but really 10-12 above

General Discussion / Re: Breakdown Cover

Hi Darren,

Went through exactly the same one last renewal.  Previous years the AA had negotiated to less that half the renewal quote, this year they offered about 5% even when I went back with the RAC quote.

I'm now a happy member of the Royal Automobile Club, and spent my £25 shell voucher their website had as an offer when I took out the cover.

tbh I was normally more a fan of the RAC, but the AA had a deal with landrover that applied to me for a few years, so no real regrets with them pricing themselves out of the market.

I resemble that point - I am certainly not a cabbage cut or even half cut!

Very succinct, mind you, it's only the specific variations relating to headed cabbages rather than the full policy....

Money well spent!

More by luck than judgement when I went over I actually bought the return leg whilst over there - as availability is so easy I would definitely recommend that approach for future, and then you can at least prove you're in the right country for the outbound leg.

Don't know about you guys, but today was the first day in around two months when the roads around me felt like there was any grip - a great day

Ah - that must have been my mistake

Nice job Bryn, I'm the wrong area to take advantage of the services you used, but am tempted.

I understand, no-ne really needs top end added to the GTR, but usability that an applied budget offers has to be a great way to go.

One point, with your plate in the photos, I hope your insurance has been advised

Enjoy!
