1400GTR Discussion / Re: bike issues

Good idea

Corrosion is one question i have, when viewing used bikes i noticed some had heavy corrosion on the near side engine casing, bevel and caliper bolts, many had it on the radiator, however it didn't seem to be mileage related but may be age? - saw a badly corroded 5K 2007 model, i know have an unbelievably mint 2010 with 11K.

I intend keeping it bathed in ACF50, but do they deteriorate in wet/ winter weather quickly?

Im guessing its the same with BMW RT, you can overfill it if the wheel turns while filling, (as stated in the RT 's maintenance manual).

Also it takes a time to level off, if you pump a load in there and put the cap back on before its finished dripping you can still have too much, whether its enough to blow a seal i don't know?

Awesome! is it mounted to your crash bars?

£20 for the cupholder, £200 for the crash bars - sounds like a bargain, i'll send the wife and kids on holiday on there own to justify the cost!

Im definitely getting one, cheers!

Ziderman - Spot on about beemers!

I had a Pan St1100 for 6 years, then St1300 for 6 months and the ECU went twice! (might be something to do with pulling wheelies off the lights!) but lost faith in it, had my incident speeding (on the old pan) hence i veered away from the GTR as i thought it was too quick/ tempting for my frame of mind, thats why i chose the RT and RoSPA course, was going for the GS but there as common as tampax! (i don't need to say it!), but got board with motorway cruising (struggling) on the RT, the GTR is so smooth and orgasmic its additive! Its done a week in London and been wet, so know i can't wait to clean it as soon as the rain stops!
Not wheelied the GTR.......... yet!
Does any one know if the KTRC kicks in when the front lifts?

Hi All

For me id choose:

Screen that extends with one quick push of the button and down in the same manor, but hold to position specifically, speed related wouldn't be relevant and annoying. but may be a faster screen would, not that its slow.

Motorised Folding Mirrors - had the GTR a day, hit traffic the first thing i did was pull them in just to get through the scooter gaps, one button to flip in or out would be great, am thinking about some small substitute mirror just for filtering.

Cruise Control - had it on my RT and used it a lot, especially where average speed camera exist - its a good idea.

Forward Facing Camera for recording journey is worth while, but definitely not to be viewed whilst riding, no point rear facing, the mirrors on the GT are excellent and one of the reasons i bought it, theres a lot on the market and are easy to fit just not secure when parked up.

I know this may sound cliche stupid, but a cup holder! - seriously, in the summer when im running round London im sticking bottles every were to grab while on the run (not while riding, although i have been known to have the odd fag while chipping round town, ash tray would just need emptying!). - i have a cup (bottle) holder on my WR.

Pillion Ejector Seat, weight sensitive with height and trajectory selection would be well James Bond though!  ::) Now i am joking in case you couldn't tell!

Loving the bike though guys, wish i bought it in the first place, can't believe i chose BMW RT over this a year ago???? :-[

Hi Mecki, answer to your last question first, id say the Newbie recently corrected by the Seasoned Police Man!

My intention was not to offend but to state that some questions can't be answered in a simple statement, and as your are obviously a keen biker my recommendation would be to seek your answers through training taking you through the different circumstances giving you the full picture, i think its the best way of understanding and interpreting the law.

Saw the aftermath of yet another accident today on the M40, looked like a biker undertook an Artic, change in weather always seems to bring more accidents?

Best Regards.

Hi Ziderman, i haven't done the IAM as it was genuinely the need to keep up my training that made me choose the RoSPA, and my instructor who ripped me to to shreds made me challenge him to prove him wrong, we're best of friends now!

Lone Wolf - 17 points im not proud of, and it wasn't as if i collected them from pulling stunts or showing off, it was literally being a car driver on a bike (commuting a sleep i kid you not!)
The solicitor i used was amazing they deal with motoring offences only and i would recommend them to any one, (it took 3 months to go through the whole process and i did received 3 weeks of Ban during the process which was revoked), i think the key is being able to prove that others are affected by you not holding your license (i own a small business, etc...)

I probably should discuss this under the filtering subject, but i have been using my GTR this week in London and notice that motorways the temperature sits at 1 bar and not long after im in town the temperature shoots up to 3 bars, the fan stays on pretty much all day and it doesn't seem to cool down until the open road where it cools to 1 bar, was thinking the stats on its way out - does everybodies GTR do this?

Hi Good to meet you Ziderman!

Thought my comments might spark some interest, i like a good debate! may be "concerned" is the wrong choice of word, but Turning Right, Undertaking, basics im sure you cannot deny, and not questions you'd expect to be made by experienced riders, something i believed the GTR market would be?

More to the point new/ unknowledgeable riders will take specific comments from the more experienced literally with view to self improvement and in offering that advice lies some due dilegence as an experienced rider.

RoSPA Vs IAM - i think the RoSPA is far more reasonable and comprehensive than the IAM, but alas the quality of training is with the instructor as much as the pupil, coming from a long background of what i now call ASBO riding i found the RoSPA riding course good therapy and believe in furthering knowledge and application of skills, RoSPA and IAM are the only official ways to do it with measured accreditation.

I don't think the advanced course are designed to impress, but to be embraced as it is a good system, as you know there are no magic tricks or special skills but personal thought and attitude,  it works for the Police and in majority do lead by example, im sure many may have the odd falter, but no ones perfect.

Id avoid discouraging others from further Training, more knowledge and practise has to be worth while, as reformed smokers are the worst anti smoking preachers, im the same with training, especially with the amount of accidents i see in and around London that should of been avoided is frustrating.

Id like to know what your likes and dislikes are with the RoSPA and IAM Training?

I may sound it, but im not entirely pro RoSPA/ IAM but other than self experience what else is there between the initial test training and further training to enlighten riders to improve themselves?

Thoughts?

Hi all, just joined the website, just bought GTR,  interesting subjects under discussion, but a little concerned about some of the questions being asked, surely some of these are basic issues?

For those who have not furthered their training since gaining their license i would suggest the answers are within the RoSPA training, "Use the force" (Police Force that is!)
I have been riding for 20 years Commuting, Touring, Track Days, Off Road, you name it i still do it, i commute to the city every day (passing 44 cameras everyday) and a while back during period of sleep deprivation (Dads out there know what i mean!) i managed to clock up 17 points in 3 months! long story short, found an amazing solicitor, a number of mitigating circumstances, crown conditions and completion of RoSPA training (my own omission as a gesture of good will) i managed to keep my license.

Due to my age and experience i believed there was nothing more to learn, and to be fair there wasn't really much more but the ability to be constructively self critical and that riding attitude is key to the delivery of your riding skills, plus a refresher on the rules of the road goes a long way, i enjoyed the training, it was as exciting as taking my test for the first time.

For me the most satisfying element of traffic riding now is knowing your right, not believing and being flexible to give way to others right or wrong.

Court cases are in progress all the time and do affect the laws in place, but these individual cases are solicitors manipulation of the perception of facts and don't directly translate to the road, just because someone else has done something doesn't mean you can.

Ok Preeching over, this i know from experience,  Filtering is moving through stationary traffic, anything else is under/ overtaking, the person a head travelling in the same direction has right of way, on coming traffic has right of way, yes you can filter and it is tollerated to a degree, but measured by Traffic Officers personal judgement by the effect you have on other road users, if your actions cause others to act or be put a risk your in the wrong its as simple as that.

Cars turning right? the oldest and most common one in the book i think?

GTR 1400 best bike in the world for RoSPA training and the odd fling!
