General Discussion / Re: SELLING GTR

I will miss the GTR but felt that a £500 service compared to changing to another tourer with just under 3000 miles was a deal I would be foolish not to consider.
I have never had a Yamaha before, but have heard good things about the FJR 1300. I think it is a bit lower and probably not quite the beast the GTR is. I did have a ride but like most test rides you never really know until you have been living with the bike a few months.
I went all over Europe on the GTR so will miss it.
Still pinching myself I got £7k trade in. Unbelievable, but also makes me wonder what the mark up price was on the Yamaha, I reckon it possibly was £2k
I will keep my eyes out for you guys when I am out and about.

After 3 great years with my Kawasaki I am selling it and moving on.
I have done 25000 miles on it from new (It is new on a 2011 plate but a AF9 2009 model)
I today went to book its big service with shims etc, which was going to cost £500. Saw a 2011 FJR 1300 A with only 3k miles on from new. With full MOT and Tax and 1 yrs warranty. £2k to change.
I got 7K part exchange which was unbelievable. A no brainer.
I will keep watching you guys and want to thank you so much for all the help I have had since I have had the bike.
Best Wishes to all

Try ATLAS you can google them. They are quite reasonable.

Hi Andy

I do need to thank you as you are right. Which ever way I look at this it does not fit.
My lad went out and got this after I told him to get a 600 Bandit. It has proved a very expensive mistake at 3k. The machine is mint and has 1yrs tax and MOT.
I feel for him and last night he put it on ebay. He has scrimped and saved to get it and the insurance a new lid boots etc.
I think the people who do the training should have explained this to him, as his instructor knew he was going to get a Hornet. But the pre 2006 models were less bhp.
A valuable lesson learned.

Hi BDF
This is our European Union who have decided that new riders must have their bikes restricted. In my son's case he is 20 and has passed his test which allows him to ride certain bikes up to 47KW for 2 years then he can hace the restrictor taken off.
It is very complicated legislation, hence the posts.
if you are really curious just google which bikes can you ride on A2 driving licence restricted.
You will then see how debatable the legislation is on what you can and cannot do. I even have Honda dealerships saying you can, and one dealership (Not Honda) saying you cannot.
Today I looked at the Registration document and it clearly says the bike is 71KW so it appears we can.
Anyway it has really put my lad off and tonight he has put the bike on E bay and is really peed off.

Hi Andy

I know what that web site says and a lot refers to the bike you use when taking your test

The 2006 Honda Hornet CB600 F-6 Shows the KW Max Net Power on the V5 under Vehicle Details
Section P2 this shows on the registration document from DVLC it is 71 KW so well within the 47 restrictor regs.

I must admit the rules are really confusing, and you have to look and get evidence of your BHP or KW to know what applies.

Really appreciate the post and link

Best Wishes

I am given to believe that you need the official certificates which are agreed with dept of Transport and Insurance. I can get one off ebay but the Govt have licensed only certain companies to do the certificates, so if he was stopped or had an accident the insurance would not recognise a dealer giving a certificate. The dealer has to enter the certificate on a data base one goes to the insurance company and my son will keep the other

This is (If I have been told correctly) they have you by the unmentionables

General Discussion / HOW TO PUT OFF NEW BIKERS
May 02, 2014, 01:56:13 PM
My 21 year old son has just paid loads of money to take his full motorbike test. Before Easter he bought a fantastic mint conditiron Honda Hornet, but of course he needs a 47 bhp restrictor kit.
I rode it for him to DK motors before Easter and paid for the certificates and kit to be fitted. They had to order one. 4 weeks later nothing, people they are ordering from have failed to supply them.
So I take it to another dealer who orders it and I pay up front (Had refund from D,K, who could not have been better in apologising. It was not their fault) Same thing is happening again, the manufactorers have failed to deliver to date (7 days ago took it to new garage)
My son has missed out on two bank holidays Easter and May. He has lost a months tax and insurance, and is now totally peed off and is selling the bike.
This is certainly the way to attract new riders and keep the motor cycle industry vibrant. I really feel for him.
The legislation traps him as you cannot just go out and fit one of the restrictors- even though you can get one off e bay. You need the certification and recording of the fitting to ensure insurance is valid.

1400GTR Discussion / dropped bike - Bobbins
April 27, 2014, 12:09:42 PM
Well after 3 years I yesterday dropped the bike on my drive. Started to go off on a ride, low speed right move off my drive and felt the bike going. Stationary and leant the bike down. Some slight scuffs to the mirror and lower fairing. The pannier helped, which did not get marked. Very lucky.

The bike just became unmanageable once I had gone and moved the front wheel too far. Lucky the old plod training allowed me to just gently lean the bike down. May invest in some bobbins, but last time I enquired they were a fortune.

I have just decided as a result of this post to get a radiator guard

Went on Ebay and have ordered one for £38 incl p and p.

For the price it is not worth not having one. Will let you know how it is when it arrives.

Hi Patrick you may recall I posted a year ago with pretty much the same thing. New Battery cured it.

Just got mine in and it is £123.54 Fully Comp

This is with Bennetts and a renewal of my last years policy.

I could have got it for £112 with another insurer but they are not as well known as Bennetts, so I am happy to stay with them.

I am very pleased.

I am very pleased you got a good price.

But what annoys me, is that this is not uncommon

Insurance Companies do not reward loyalty and do not give you the best price on renewal. Then when you go back to tell them you can get a better price, they match it.

My attitude is then to tell them politely 'To stuff it'. Had they quoted me this in the first place I would have renewed with them. As I say their arrogant attitude annoys me.

Hi Dive

I had this last year. Would you believe it was the battery which needed replacing.

Once you replace it you will still get the problem for a few miles until the engine readout system recognises you have a new battery.

I know this seems unlikely, and I am not saying this is the cause, but all that has been said was fed back to me and then I found out it was nothing other than a new battery needed. How it caused the problem I have not a clue.
