All working properly now.

Just a quick question though... I had a genuine reg/rect fitted and it was £280.  I have seen "brand new" on fleabay for £40.  I am doubting a 40 quid unit would last as long and may be a false economy.  Anyone had any experience of these cheap units?

I use a sena.  Can remember the model.  Built to fit inside an arai lid.  Has a handlebar remote to don't need to let go to adjust volume or change tracks.  Battery lasts all day.  Intercom function is long range and clear.  Mostly use it to hear sat nav and music.

Its surprising how not a lot of money would tidy that up no end.  Start with some Harpic "X" cleaner on the header and link pipes.  Works wonders.  A few replacement stainless bolts here and there around the back end...

On my old GTR, I picked it up for £5200 18 months ago in a similar state.  Did lots of replacementts like that and I've just traded it for £5500...
Oh yes... she will get cleaned within an inch of her life!  The harpic x trick is one I have seen but not yet tried.

I have bigger plans too... colour change and somehow have to get the frame colour to stay put... seems boots rub it off.

Needs a replacement fairing lower on the other side and I would love to get rid of that silly noisy exhaust in favour of something like an Akrapovic... if anyone has one in their garage 🤣🤣

1400GTR Discussion / Fairing lowers
January 22, 2020, 07:14:19 PM
Now I've got her running I'd like to start thinking about cosmetic bits.

Parts are rare a rocking horse poop on fleabay so need ideas on how to restore my fairing lowers which are scratched and one side has a hole.

Ok... so fitted a new battery as the old one wouldn't take a charge on the bench.

Still wasn't charging on the bike properly so took it to the dealers.

As expected the regulator/recitifier is dead.

Waiting on having a new one fitred .. expensive but going to be worth it I think.

Next job sort out the cosmetics.  Poor things had a terrible paint job applied and that just has to be fixed!!

Welcome!

Stick with the bike, like others I have had no troubles but then again batteries and stuff like that never have an eternal life.

I'm sure you will have a good 2020 with her.

Pete.
I am sticking with.  When she's working she's lovely and just eats my weekly trip up to London.  Used to do it on an 02 fazer and the GTR is so much more suited to it!!

Not sure you can on Gen1 (might be wrong, though, been a while since I had a Gen1)
Gen 1 lets you monitor battery voltage on the display... it's what I have been watching very carefully.

With the fluctuations in lighting and some research on symptoms I'm fairly sure its the reg/rect that's gone... just can't get the thing apart to do the measurements so it's booked in to be looked at by the professionals.....

I believe the recommendation is to replace the fluid every 2 years.

Flush the brakes while you are at it.  😁

My clutch had started to drag because of old fluid.  Flushed through with new fluid and all was well.  So I would try flushing through with new before doing anything else.

So... it finally stopped raining.

Trying to disconnect the grey connector for the reg/rect... how the heck dies it come off?  I've found a tab that I've pushed in while pulling in the body of the connector but not a sign of movement.

I am assuming there is a trick.  Not a lot of space to work in down there... anyone got any bright idea?

I don't want to fork out for a dealer to do what should be an easy check... plus there is no Kawasaki dealer in the Isle if Wight.

Still not stopped raining.... going to have to do this under in waterproofs... don't fancy measuring output from alternator in the wet mind... get quite a jolt if that goes wrong.

Tried that.... very random results.... at 4000rpm it will give 13.7... at 3900 rpm 12.7... and many other voltages.

If it stops raining for 10 minutes I'll check the measurements at the regulator
