I'm obsessed with tyres; only bit of the bike that touches the road.  I fitted Avon Storm 3D X-M and am very impressed.  I've had Avons on lighter bikes in the past but they handle the GTR really, really well and are great value.

They compare really well against the Michelin and Bridgestones

Just my opinion.

I've been a big fan of the AVon Storms starting with the Storm 2 then latterly the Storm 3DXM (although accidentally fitted Ultras once, grippy but wore out a lot quicker lol) for many years and many miles on ST1100's & CBR1100s.

I'm currently running the Avon Spirits  (replacement for the 3D XM which is now, according to a chap I know who happens to be a area rep for Avon, officially classed as "entry level" but still damn good) on the GTR and just love them

The Gen 2's look "dumpier" at the front IMHO

On my previous bikes (ST1100's & Blackbirds) I was a big fan of the Avon Storms in their various incarnations.

On the GTR I currently have the newer version (now called the Spirit ST) and equally love them :)

BTW the nice thing about Avons is their Road Hazard warranty (which I have used in the past). Get a puncture in the first 1mm of wear and they replace FOC (other than fitting charges)

TBH  Hi Viz is probably more useful off the bike at the side of tha road than when you''re on it given screns & top boxes etc obscure most of the vest.

That said I do have one, handy clear pocket on the front I keep my driving licence in, little pocket for keeping spare ear plugs in, an inside pocket for my ecig and a bum pocket thats handy for keeping some spare gloves in.

Regarding Tolls it all depends what you're trying to achieve.

Couple of years back I just wanted to get down to Monaco as quick as possible (was there for the F1 before continuing down into Italy for a week), it that case using the tolls made it doable in one long day(from Calais) and saved 6 hours riding , although at a cost

its not about qaulity, its about shaving production  cost, or penny pinching

or it could be rationalised as "weight saving" ;)

Does anyone have a picture of the s shape clip the usa guys used

Not to hand but if you're looking for instructions on " pinning" the panniers to prevent them flying off should the latches break (as opposed to some oik nicking them) then..

Not to my knowledge. The panniers could be removed on the pre 2010 models which I owned and the post 2010 models, which I also owned.
NB this is a separate issue to being able to remove the panniers without a key

There was a recall to rectify this situation?

My understanding is that the recall has nothing to do with the ability to take the panniers off without a key.

The recall related to a portion of the retaining lug breaking.

There is apparently (based on some googling around) a separate exploit that utilises the fact that the lock on the panniers is missing some basic anti tamper elements.
