People seem to have ignored the fact you have an original GTR.

I don't believe R&G make bars for the original GTR, just the "mkII" version.

They do make crash bungs, which involves drilling holes through the fairing panels; something I was never a fan of.

I went with these: http://projektd.com/product_info.php?cPath=27_39_40&products_id=71

Fast delivery, perfect fit, and no drilling required.

Best of luck whatever you go with.

1400GTR Discussion / Re: Top Box

Kawasaki sell a plate that replaces the original plate (bolts down in the same position) and that takes Givi Monokey top boxes.

https://www.kawasakioriginalparts.com/accessories/2016-models/gtr-1400-grand-tourer-2016/kawasaki-gtr1400-2015-47l-topcase-system-carrier-plate.html

There are a few Givi boxes that let you buy an "unpainted top cover" which you then fit onto the box after you've had it sprayed to colour-match your bike.

Hope that helps.

PS: That plate fits all years and all models. It certainly fitted on my '09 bike.

So what is it about a single wheel that bothers you so?

Physics. I first spotted this combo with the bike parked on its side stand. The trailer was leaning at a steeper angle than the bike. It then passed me later, and the term "unsafe" would be an understatement. Like I said, if the owner wanted to go a bit Mad Max in his shed with some angle iron, a moped wheel and a welder, then good for him. Maybe a 56 litre top box would be slightly more sensible.

Why would you think a GTR is somehow less capable of towing a trailer than a Goldwing?

I'm sure it's just as capable (if not more so) of towing a trailer as a Goldwing, if we're talking about a standard trailer with 2 wheels touching the tarmac. The trailer I saw was a bit "Mad Max", that was all.

Yesterday (Bank Holiday Monday) I was heading for the ferry across Poole Harbour. On the Swanage side (well, Studland to be precise) on the long road that ends at the ferry crossing (Ferry Road, amazingly) I spotted a '65 plate GTR in grey with some weird homemade single-wheel leaning-trailer contraption!

Part of me thinks "kudos for the building that" and the rest of me thinks "are you completely insane? How safe is that at speed? If you want a bike with a trailer buy a Gold Wing..."

... but the 142 horses of the z1000 sx combined with the mere 235 kg weight (80kg lighter than our gtr!!!) sold it to me.

... weird how a lot of touring bikes nowadays only have small panniers and  no top boxes?

Like the Z1000SX? A fantastic machine, and may even be considered a sports-tourer, but it is definitely more sports than tourer, imho.

Swallow your pride, head to your local BMW dealer and book a test ride on an R1200RS.

I changed bikes for pretty much the exact same reason (excessive weight).

You'll end up with fewer gee-gees (125bhp), but also a lot less kgs (only 230kg compared to the GTR 300+kg - so power to weight is not much different). There isn't much in it in terms of torque, either.

You'll still have the shaft drive, but also heated grips, cruise control, adjustable suspension, and plenty of luggage options (BMW luggage is expensive - the SHAD mounts and luggage is neatest and best value).

It's a bike you could cross Europe on (I did, last summer) or go and play silly buggers with your mates on the twisties (which I do, regularly  )

Just my twopennyworth.

In 2016 I did 5000 miles over 2 weeks on my GTR, in some seriously bad Scandinavian weather sat behind an MRA Vario Touring screen, which I found to be superb.

The Market / Re: Looking for touring screen & risers

Hi folks,
As per title, does anybody have for sale a touring screen & bar risers. Am trying to find a way to stop me selling the best bike I've ever had......

TIA.
Bigbad

The MRA Vario-Touring screen and 1" risers transformed the bike for me. It made it a "proper" tourer, imho.

I only changed bike due to the weight.

I have a quick shifter fitted to mine, I wasn't sure initially whether it was just a gimmick but in hindsight I'm glad I had it fitted.

Likewise. After a couple of days I began to wonder how I ever lived without one in the past. I'm a convert  :cheesy:

There's a bike in the "For Sale" section that is a *very* good price! You could buy that, and if you didn't get on with you genuinely would not lose money on it.

Just a thought.

And how is that done

As per the video. Ignition on. Full throttle twice. Ignition off.

The GTR is a "fly by wire" machine. The throttle cable goes to a Thottle Position Sensor. *That* can sometimes be out of whack. Hence this "reset" trick.

Before getting it re-mapped, try a throttle calibration reset. Could be an easy fix.

Never be loyal. Shop round every year. Get your best quote and you might  find original insurer will match it.

:agree:

Loyalty (with insurers) will cost you. It's an upside down world, sometimes.

This brings back happy memories of lusting after one of these when I was young and stupid(er).

I met someone who owned one, who told me that if he ever dropped it, he doubted he could pick it up (i.e. it was bloody heavy). Also, it was completely awesome as long as you only wanted to go in a straight line - but that can probably be said of many bikes of that era.

It never stopped me from wanting one.

Keep us posted if you buy it
