Thanks charlie mac, that's an impressive performance from the bars!

What did this quote from Ros refer to though:

"...However, from what Debs has experienced, it might be worth checking the subframe / attachment points etc."

Débs?

Why would you remove them with the panniers off?  That would be the most relevant time for them to be fitted as the panniers would offer an amount of protection to rest of the bike in a drop.

Because I prefer the look of a bike without panniers unless I need them, but I think it'd look silly with no panniers and the rear bars sticking out so far... I take your point about losing some protection then though. Those bars can also come as a kit with crash bungs too for extra protection.

Has anyone got them fitted? It looks like the rears are just attached via the two bolts that hold the rear footpeg hanger - just wondered how much of an impact they'd withstand before bending/shearing...

the RG adventure bars don't interfere with my feet and im 6ft tall. The shape of the bars is very close to the cotour of the fairing and are a very close fit , id try and get a look at them in the flesh. they are much better than I thought they would be . ive designed a quick release mechanism for the rear bars should I ever go without panniers or for storage near a garage wall ect

Ah that's good to hear, thank you.

I like the look of these too:

The rears are apparently easily removable which is good as a lot of the time I'll be riding with the panniers off.

...Depends if you want looks over function , the look of bungs is less obtrusive but not as protective

I think you've hit the nail on the head there. For me bungs look better unless you're on an adventure bike. With some bikes bungs look to give as much protection in a drop as bars but that doesn't appear to be the case with the behemoth GTR!

I do like the look of the bars Débs has on her bike - good protection but out of the way of feet.

Before committing yet more cash for yet another bike without knowing if I can truly find peace and quiet for my tinnitus riddled hearing I tested an FJR1300 today. Really smooth (smoother than the GTRs I've tested) but it felt really small compared to the GTR, which is odd for a bike weighing 300kg. Anyhow I felt more comfortable on the GTR so just got to find the right one for me now...

Considering the bike has been around for a while, how have they managed to make such a hash of the sidestand? It's probably the most difficult one to kick down I've ever experienced - not good for a heavy bike

I've got a set of engine bars on a shelf in the garage.

Perhaps I've missed something but I didn't think they were designed to work that way...  :mfr_lol:

As an impending GTR owner can I ask those of you that own (or have owned) one whether you fitted engine bars or bungs? Would you recommend the ones you chose or would you get something else next time? R&G do both but I know there are other makes out there...

I've already seen the damage that can be done by a drop  :whistling:

I think the engine bars look better than the bungs and they are functional as you can attach accessories to them.

I agree. Think I'll start this as a new thread (which I should have done in the first place!)...

Do most GTR owners fit engine bars or bungs? R&G do bars and bungs, both around £160 which seems reasonable...

Have a look in The Market section on here, there is a 2009 GTR for sale, less mileage than the one you've just looked at, and I don't believe it has been dropped like the other one, oh and it's cheaper.

Having ridden an 08 and a 10 now I definitely prefer the 10 onwards model. There are a couple of 10 plate bikes around with much lower mileages but they cost around £1700 (ie nearly 30%) more and they don't have the rorty exhaust

If they were £7000 (like yours was Wolf) then it'd be a different matter. Decisions, decisions...

Well I had a very pleasant ride following Débs round today - thanks Débs  Nice to see a brace of GTRs out and about too

The ride confirmed that the stock screen on the 2010 model is still way too short for me. I did notice it flexing quite significantly at its highest position at around 70mph - is it a case of "They all do that sir!" or is it just this one...???

Let me know if you come down Bill and I will pop out and meet you there.

Will do. Will drive down as I can't bear the noise from my bike anymore!

Whether to buy a Cat D bike or not is an interesting one. I'll have to give that some thought and also check with my insurance company as I've been told they may well bump the premium...  :censored:

I think it's still worth a look though so I may well drive down there tomorrow and go for a test ride in the sunshine
