Title: raising the front wheel!
Post by: 2kwacks on November 06, 2011, 08:05:01 PM
As anyone eles made this? well it looks like the gtr is going to spend more time in the garage now the winter is here. I prefer the whole bike to be clear of the ground when not used for a while, and the suspension not to be under any load! also the front tyre will need to be change at some point, with the headers pipes being off set its not recommended to lift the full weight on one set! so made this block out of 2 pieces of wood with the necessary cuts outs to enable the block to sit flush, allowing the bikes weight to be distributed evenly across both sets of pipes, but clearing the sump and sump bolt, simple but effective.

That looks good. Am I right in saying that that block of wood will also assist in front wheel rotation to help with cleaning, locating tyre valve, or wheel removal etc?

it gives you complete excess to the front wheel, the whole bike is now clear of the ground, you can clean the wheel, pump up the tyre "with out pulling the wheel round" or moving the bike to gain excess to the valve, check your tyre for defects, check your head bearings, check your wheel bearings, check your pads are not binding. also when you need to remove your front wheel theres no need to remove the front mudguard to make more clearence. just place a flat piece of wood like have done under the full stand this enables you to raise the front more if extra clearence is required. I dont have this problem on my zzr1400 due to the header pipes not being off set, so just use a full abba lift and abba front lift. you can just about see the full abba lift behind in the picture.

I've started using a sturdy front paddock stand as i wasnt sure bout jacking on pipes, like the custom wood block as you say for long periods of storing

know what you mean about jacking on the pipes, but the dealers have some thing simular it even as a part number. all it dose is what have done which is distribute the weight evenly across the 4 down pipes. do have a paddock stand, but this wooden block would be needed when the wheel is removed or you will need to remove the mudgaurd "it looks like there would not be enough clearence to clear the mudgaurd" ok thats no big deal, but like have said this allows you to check the wheel bearings and head bearings and take the weight of the suspension when storing and only took me 30 mins to knock together.

When i had a Blade a few years ago i also had a Oxford Products groud anchor bolted to the floor, in fact i still do, i used to get two sets of ratchet straps and wind the back down to it raising the front, i dod always put a small block of wood under the front just in case but found the straps to hold it level quite easily.

I use to do some thing simular. also have used the beams in the garage roof to raise the bikes when I used to have winter projects on the go, suppose there allways a way around a problem. on a zx7r I bought, it had front end damage and needed to replace the forks. lucky enough it had r&g frame protectors fitted. used a jack on the headers to lift the front, put pavement flags each side to gain more height and placed a set of axle stands on the two flags then lowerd the bike on the axle stands using the r&g bobbins for support. mind you" I prefer to ride them now! but I don't miss the cold nights in the garage or the wife's sarcasm, "why don't you move your bed in and have done with it!
