Title: Whitby & Goathland, North Yorkshire
Post by: Lonewolf on October 09, 2010, 08:51:42 PM
Forced into getting a GTR 1400 by the wife I thought I'd better make some use of it.

Another popular place with bikers and myself is Whitby. I've been a few times, more just for the ride out than any actual shopping when I get there, but if you are into Old'e World goods there are quite a few antique shops there and unfortunately the usual tacky souviner shops selling the traditional tat.

A64, (Leeds side) and up the A1M coming off at the A168 and onto the A19 and finally the A172 - A173 - A171 will navigate you on the West side of the North Yorkshire Moors towards Guisborough before you reach Whitby. As I said I've been to Whitby many times, I think its mandatory on a bike to do it at least once and check out the fantastic roads, but I had never been on this route before. I usually just go straight in on the A169 but I had a bit more time to spare today so a different route was the order of the day.

This is typical of what you will be riding through, mile after mile and with the weather as it was on this day, sheer brill. Fantastic view and the green stuff isn't bad either.

I pulled into a little rest area just off the A173 and was joined by Pan Man.

Pan Man lived in Skipton, North Yorkshire but had a static caravan at Filey and was just out running in his new Pan. We had a chat for a while as you do, comparing bikes and chewing the fat, but then it was time to press on so I left Pan Man after twenty minutes or so and headed into Whitby towards the West Cliff. Good spot for bikes, free parking too!

There are some great views out to sea,

And some not so great views slightly inland.

The traditional beech hut.

On the cliff top is the well know landmark of Capt James Cook.

Whitby Abbey in the distance.

For those of us who follow Heartbeat, I'm sure this has featured in the series.

Back down in the harbour by the main shops is a gem of a sight. The very impressive Grand Turk. A replica but still a very impressive sight. http://easternyachts.com/grandturk/history.htm

Climbing out of Whitby there are some alternative routes off the beaten track where you can test your riding ability with some steep gradients.....

Stunning landscapes.

RAF Fylingdales way in the distance. http://www.raf.mod.uk/raffylingdales/

Once again, back to the TV series Heartbeat. If you ever wanted to know where it was filmed but were always too afraid to ask, well this is where it's filmed, or at least the main location anyway,
Goathland, only about ten miles or so outside Whitby.

What used to be an anonymous village in bleak surroundings is now turned upside down with film crews, actors etc.

I think this railway was also featured in one of the Harry Potter films.

Definitely worth a visit if you are ever up in that neck of the woods.

From there I went out towards Filey & Robin Hood Bay still sticking to the East Coast. I can't remember whether these next photos were taken at Filey or Robin Hood Bay. Then I rode onto Scarborough. From Scarborough, a quick blast along the A165 coastal road towards Bridlington. No time to stop, a quick refill at Morrison's, for me and the bike and then back home via Stamford Bridge and the A64 towards York.

Just one quick stop required on the A64 for a shake from McDonalds.

230 miles approximately round trip and averaged 49.6 mpg. Well chuffed.

Hope you enjoyed the photos.

Brings back memories. My old geography teacher, Mr Dennison, has a bench named in his honour at Whitby. I'm pretty sure its at the arch made by bones. What a teacher - fearsome at school but really cared about his students and the local area. One of a kind.

Another set of great pics there LW. I always wonder how you manage to keep your bike so clean! Love the pic of the classic Norton as well.
