Morning all,
I stumbled across a guy (Bill) on the US version of our forum making hand deflectors for the 2010/11, and I prefer his design greatly to those (Motax and the like) as they have no need for a metal bracket. I figure these will make winter much nicer as they steer the wind and rain from your gloves.
As his prices are pretty keen, and it makes sense to share postage costs, I have ordered 5 lots from him. 3 sets for bikes with standard bars, 2 sets for bikes with risers.
Anyone want a set?
It is costing me $55USD a set posted, so adding say £10 for customs and onward posting, I reckon these will come out at £45 per set shipped in the UK. I am not looking to make any money, so the end cost will be whatever it costs me.
Martin.
Details below:
The thread on the US forum: http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=2854.msg35072#msg35072
Description from Bill: They are made from 1/8" lexan, which is very resistant to discoloring and shattering, and bent so there are no brackets etc. They sit behind the stock windshield about 3/8" so there is no interference in any position and the mirrors can be retracted forward and back without removing.

Martin .... count me in for a pair .. 11 reg, standard bars. Sending you a PM with my details.
Anything to make the winter months more comfortable, and I have to say they look good too .
Thanks for sharing the opportunity with us ..... everyone else ? Be quick ! ;D
Go on then, I'll have some... :)
I'll need a set for a bike with bar risers though.
I'll PM you...
Cheers gents, I will let you know when they land with me. If these deflect all of the wind and rain over the gloves as I expect, I think these will be a godsend during the winter.
@Chris (regarding question in PM) I cannot say for sure that they will fit an aftermarket screen as Bill says he has only tested with the stock one. Given they sit *behind* the screen though, I really imagine they will fit any aftermarket effort.
Martin.
I'll take a set for std bars 59plate if there are any left :-)

Sure thing FH.
1 set left for a bike with risers if anyone wants them out of this order.
If there are others wanting them, I can always ask Bill if he would make some more.
Martin.
I'd go for a set for std bars on an '09 if thats possible. cheers

Bill has only made 2010/11 fitment so far, but I'll ask him. I've sent him the link to this thread too, so he may even join up and answer himself.
Martin.
Just re-read the thread, doh!!!. 10/11 model. But surely the extra height of the set for risers would allow for standard bars on my '09. Anybody know how much higher the mirrors are on the newer GTR's? if its only 3/4 to 1 inch i'd be prepared to risk it and buy the riser set and be the guinea pig for those of us with earlier bikes.
put me down for a std pair (if still available).
Can I jump in here too, if they're still going, for a 2010 with std bars?
Thanks guys.
As it stands with the original order of 5 sets:
- Myself, Lord Rusty and FatHarry are having the standard sets
- cpettifer is having one set for risers
- nogoslow has first refusal on the last risers set, but I think the fact his is an 09 may be an issue - not sure if mirror shape has changed aswell as height. I will try and find out from Bill.
Kwikasfuki and bradders94, I will see if I can add 2 more sets of standard to the order.
Martin.
For anyone interested, Bill sent me this link for some photos of the spacers and bolts that come with the wings.

MJJ. Feel free to pass me by and give the last riser set to some one who we know they will fit their bike. I can wait till were sure they will fit the earlier bikes. if you keep in touch with this guy in the US, put me down on the first order of pre '10. Perhaps one of the guys to get the riser sets wouldn't mind a test fit on a pre '10 bike near to them then we would all know for sure and perhaps could arrange another bulk order.
It would be great if you can add some more to the order. Thanks for getting this arranged Martin.
I'm getting these in preparation for a new bike next year. ;D
Thanks Martin. Mine too are in preparation for a new bike, coming on Saturday!!!!! Can't wait!!
Let me know if you can add me to the order and how I need to pay.
Thanks
Chris
And if everybody falls out who wants a standard set for an 11 bike count me in, paypal, cash or cheque i dont mind how i pay to get my hands on some.
Alan
Look forward to these arriving ... Sat morning at 530 am A3 into London... temp gauge hovering between 1 and 0, heated grip on .... I was just thinking my hands could do with a bit of wind deflection !!! ;D
Again, thanks for jacking this up Martin ... well done you.
OK guys, I have managed to get some more added to the order. I need to draw a line at some point and get them in the post to me, so I am going to check this thread at 5pm today for the last possible changes. As LR says, winter is fast approaching and we need to get these on the bikes.
The order stands as follows.
- Myself, Lord Rusty, FatHarry, Kwikasfuki, bradders94 and BigAlan are all having the standard sets
- cpettifer is having one set for risers
There is one set available for bikes with risers if anyone wants them.
I will get back in touch with everyone when they land with me (should be only a few days), and make sure I have addresses for everyone.
Once you are happy with them, and once I have worked out exactly what they cost, I'll give out some payment details so you can send me the money.
@nogoslow, Bill says he has not had chance to try his wings on a pre-2010 bike, so he cannot confirm if they fit or not. If nobody buys the spare riser set, I am happy to post them to you to try.
Cheers all,
Martin.
Excellent news, thanks and just shout when you want the cash/cheque/paypal/groats/soverigns or scrap alloy.
Alan
Martin, I may not be around until 5th nov.
Do you want paying now or are you appy to wa?it till the 5th?

No worries, it can wait until the 5th. We are not talking fortunes, and I am sure us GTR riders are all decent, trustworthy folk ;)
For those who have not PM'd me their address yet, please do so and I'll get these on their way to you once they have landed with me.
Cheers,
Martin.
I'm pretty sure a CalSci screen will work with the deflectors. I just fitted mine. Because it is fairly straight instead of curved, like the stock screen, it will probably sit further away from the deflectors. However, I've just fitted my stock screen back on as the CalSci just didn't work for me... :(
Just a wee update on this one.
The risers are all winging their way to me across the atlantic, with luck (assuming Quantas did not get the gig) they should be with me early next week. I will update again when they are on their way to you all.
Cheers,
Martin.
OK guys, the wings have landed.
My wife is currently working out a way of wrapping them safely, but they should be on their way to you all in today's post.
Oh, and by the way, they work an absolute treat. Used mine yesterday in the teaming rain and my hands stayed much drier. Great addition to the bike for the colder and wetter months.
They cost me £37.24 each to get here, I would say £5 for packaging and onward postage so a whopping total of £42.24. Will reply to all the PMs with payment details next week, and once you've got the wings and are happy with them, send over the money.
Cheers guys, and I have one set spare if anyone would still like some.
Martin.
ps: @Fatharry, still need your name and address details please.
Awesome, thanks for doing this. I've got a laminar lip on it's way too (replacement for the CalSci I didn't get on with). So pimping my ride with plastic right now!
Thanks Martin ... well done ! Not often I look forward to sending someone money ;D ;D
Excellent news, i look forward to sending you the money any way you like, oh and i just fitted the Laminar lip on the bike and its awesome, raining today and the wind noise was sooo much quieter, the screen wobbles a bit more but thats to be expected.
Thanks
Alan
" Nights " last night so I was fast asleep when the Postman knocked this morning at 1035 with his parcel delivery that needed signing for .... Gggrrrrr ... will have to wait till Monday ....
Do these fit the pre 2010 models?
Mine arrived safely on Saturday morning. Fitted now but still awaiting a test ride. Easy to fit though and look good on the bike. Word of warning, when fitting I suspect it would be easy to overtighten and split the handguard, so go easy and use some locktite!! As soon as I get the details I'll forward the funds, thanks.

I was out on Sat when the postman came by with 4 parcels for me!! 4 parcels!! Presumably one must be my laminar lip, one must be these wind deflectors, one must be some coffee (I have coffee come every Saturday from http://www.hasbean.co.uk/ (http://www.hasbean.co.uk/))... what is the other one? I've no idea. Exciting. But I bet it's boring!
Hang on, just thought. It could be an umbrella from Kawasaki for my wife, having signed up to the rider's club.
Is she a Dolly ??

Mine came saturday and i fitted them and then took them off again to modify, i have painted the little white bobbins black, and i had the idea that they might be a little to flexible for me, so i have brought them to work today and got one of the lads to make me an extra bit of strength to them which you can see on the photo.
Alan
Glad to hear they have started arriving safely. Good old posties delivering on a Saturday.
@BigAlan, I'd suggest being a little careful with the bracing - I have a feeling that our hands will touch them on full lock, and I'd hate for them to interfere with the controls.
I must say that in the 150 miles I have done with mine fitted so far, they have been great and don't wobble or flex very much at all. They add a truly noticeable extra amount of wind protection too.
Will send some PMs to all now with payment details.
Martin.

I imagine they fit, but leave too much of a gap between the mirror and the bottom of the wing, thus lessening their effectiveness. If nogoslow still wants to be guinea pig, I am willing to send on my extra set for him to see how they fit on a pre 2010?
Martin.
i am fitting them to a 2009...i looked at the fitment and guessed they will fit...si i'll bve doing the guinea pigging......personally i reckon they'll be ok...they may just be a winter fitment to take some of the wind/rain of the hands ...... if they dont work, i'll donate them to Routemaster ::)

Ok refitted them with the added reinforced bits and they look cool, even the supplied bolts were fine, I can see these are going to be a great addition to the bike.
Best of all I have paid, top man Martin.

Collected mine from the PO today .. will fit them in the morning ... Martin ... have PM'd you.
For the first time in ages I hope this wet weather holds out for when I ride to work Thursday morning 8) 8)

@fatharry, that's a shame - I had imagined the bolts holes would be the same - pre and post 2010. If you get a chance, could you take a photo and an exact measurement of how it does not fit, might help Bill make up a set for the pre-2010.
Oh, and anyone with a 2010 on want to buy a set of wings from fatharry? ;D

already sorted...going to routemaster i think.......if anything changes i'll lety ya'all know
i'll try and get a picture, it'll need a new template i think as the spacing is well out........as an aside i've just fitted a new flowrider screen this afternoon...reckon it might foul on the guards......it'll need some head scrating me think!
If he changes his mind please let me know and I'll take them; they look quite god. If not I'll order some from the States on Sunday.
I ignored this thread as I assumed they were the 'hand wings' I bought for my 2009 that I never did manage to fit! They look different to these.
Kevin
Kevin, what are the hand wings?
Unhelpfully I can't find a link at the moment and I need to get out to the garage then off to an RTE. They are hand (wind) wings made by Baker Products. I couldn't ever work out how to fit the things and was convinced they'd sent me two of the same side. When I complained they sent me another one which was exactly the same so I suspect the issue is that I'm a numpty!
I'll have a another look for a link when I get back after lunch. I heard about them on the other UK GTR forum so I assume there's a link on there somewhere but I couldn't find it.
Kevin
Do you mean these?

No. They're the ones for the 2010 model but now you've found the site I've found the 'wings'; these ones (http://www.bakerbuilt.com/bbairwings/1400HW%20fo%20web.JPG).
Edit: Bugger. Now I've forgotten what I came in for!

All done Martin. Thanks.
Kevin
The 2010 model seems to deflect the majority of the wind/weather over the hands/lower arms so I wasn't to sure how much benefit these deflectors are going to have - I have never really had a problem in any weather.
Picked the deflectors up from FH yesterday and fitted them on the way home. They do seem to make a slight difference ie in the hands are in still air but as it was a very nice day it wasn't really much of test. The real test will come in more adverse weather ie when its a colder and in the rain
So for me the jury is out
Steve

Steve,
I have had mine on for about 700 miles now, and despite the rain and low single figures temperatures, I am still comfortable in summer gloves and heated grips on a low setting.
I think you will find them quite an improvement, particularly in the rain.

Hi, sorry but none left from the original order. I can PM you Bill's contact details in the US, and I am sure he can supply direct to you, but they will be a little more expensive as there is no savings on postage or volume.

Thanks Martin,

For the benefit of the tape what he meant to say was 110 kmph ;)
Sorry, it was a typo...
I put these on yesterday and, while I haven't tried them yet, I came to the conclusion they'd probably flex a bit. I said to myself "I bet when cpettifer's mate is doing 110 kph he'll notice the flex".

If they flex at just under 70 mph so what do they do at 110or above?
Snap off?
After all the GTR is supposed to be able to go faster than 160.
I know there is only one place in the world where you are allowed to do that kind of speed on some public roads but I tend to go there from time to time.
And when I do next time, I'll sure as hell go for it. ;D ;D ;D

This is why i had one of our guys at work make some plastic reinforcements to the exact shape, at 110 *cough* kph they dont flex.
Alan
I was thinking a simple bit of plastic down the side would probably help. I've noticed that mine do tend to wobble / flap about a little bit on the motorway. I expect they'll last a while though without re-inforcement. They've only got to go through the coldest days before they come off again in the spring. :)

But the A60, A215 or A23 for instance are ideal for testing how fast she'll go. ;D
Hardly any traffic and nice even road surfaces.
And you can even pass a police car without having to worry about your licence. :P
Hi All,
Wanted to say hi and thank you for purchasing the hand wings, and many thanks to Martin for spreading the word and setting up an order for all of you.
In looking through the board I wanted to make a couple of comments/updated.
If the snow clears here over the next few weeks a fellow rider with a 2008 model has agreed to spend a Saturday with me so that I can hopefully get templates & fitment for the earlier models. I will let you all know if and when they become available.
So far, the only screen that does not work well with the wings is the large Cal-Sci, it wraps towards the rider a bit more & contacts the wings.
I do make it across the pond, usually a couple of times a year, so I may be able to save you some shipping costs and bring a few sets with me if anyone is interested, just shoot me a PM.
Thanks again!
Bill (Flathead)
Hello Flathead .... Nice of you to drop in ... when you are over here let us all know, I am sure one of us can find you and meet up for a spot of English hospitality !! ;D ;D

Argh, didn't realise that. I guess its not a problem with pre-2010 models as the windscreen stays static after ignition is switched off, so as long as its raised sufficiently all should be OK. On 2010 models onwards, the screen returns to a default lowered position which would then scrape the guards with the Calsci. Do you know how much it contacts by?

@Kwik (love the name!) I am not sure, I took a set back from a gentleman because 'they would not work' with the Cal Sci.
@Rusty: Will do! As long as you're talking pints and not tea ;)
Quick tip... On the '10-'12 models if you hold the windscreen button in the up position while shutting down the ignition the windscreen will stay raised. Not claiming this is a viable solution for the cal-sci but just a helpful maintenance tip, makes it much easier to pop out the rivets or wash/wax, etc...
Cheers all!

The price would be $55US +shipping. You can pm me here with your post code and I can estimate shipping.
Cheers!
Pete .... get some ... I have said it a million times and they have only been on my bike a few weeks ... they is brilliant ! ;) ;)
I completely agree with Rusty, they are a great addition for the winter rider. They are so good at keeping the cold air off my hands that I can still happily use my ventilated summer gloves even now, when the temp is often 1-2 deg C in the morning.
Nice to see you (electronically) over here Bill - thanks again for your great work.
Martin.
+1 - I have heated gloves for the winter, but have hardly used them with the deflectors in place. Will be interesting over the coming few weeks if this temperature stays low to see how I get on. Except I'm in the car at the moment as I'm recovering from man flu.
Thank you all for the kind words ;)
I just checked shipping to the UK for a single pair for another member and it runs about $10usd which would put the price at about $65usd. This includes all necessary hardware. Currently trying to hook up with another member with an earlier model to get the templates made but has been snowing off & on for almost two weeks. I'll let you all know when/if they are available for the earlier modes.
@Martin, check your jd-racing email when you get a minute...
Bill
Looking forward to ordering a pair (sorry for delay) :-\

Hi guys, new into this thread, i seem to be suffering cold hands these past coupla years more so than previously, probably age, blood thinned by alchohol, or maybe I'm just a wimp. Riding the gtr back from the dealer I did notice the protection was much better than previous bikes (expected I guess). But I wasnt really on it long enough for the 'chill test' . My commute M25/M40 is around about 40-50 mins - and I started feeling the cold after about 20 mins on the bm, and that was with heated grips (nice warm palms but cold fingers and thumbs), adapted hand guards, and bloody expensive winter gloves!!.
Are these really that good? If so, I will defiinitely be getting some...

Heated gloves. First time you use them you'll know it makes sense.
Kevin
I have the deflectors and find the hands get too hot now. All though the deflectors are great, they just move the problem area (if I'm being real picky). Now its my forearm that gets a bit cold, but not something I tend to notice.
I tried the EXO2 heated gloves at the NEC and whilst very hot, didn't think I could live with how thick they are.
I haven't seen the EXO ones. The Gerbing gloves are quite thick, Warm'n'Safe are thinner but no UK distributor. Thicker has some benefit if the electrics fail.

yep lots. . . . But I was referring to the relative merits. I really do not see the need for a sports bike anymore. Too small, too uncomfortable and so on. . . .any comments?

For the road, and speaking as an almost 40 year old ZX10R owner, I would tend to agree. There are odd occasions when the 10 really does excel, the odd thrash where only the most extreme lunacy will do.
For the track though, absolutely no contest.
I still see the reason for both types of bike, and will keep both as long as I can. If I *had* to give one up, hmmmmm, tough one, and sorry to say that the GTR would probably go. The 10R does road use better than the GTR would do track use.
Martin.
These wind deflectors look a great idea, but reading the post , its a very old post. Does anyone know where these are being sold. definatley interested in getting a pair. Did 150 mile work run today and must say the knuckles were froze.

I bought them direct from Bill. He was used to shipping them all around the globe. I suggest taking a look at the link to the US forum in the very first post on this thread and getting in touch with him via PM.
Really great guy, I am sure he will help out if he is still making them.
