Title: gtr puncture
Post by: jenros on August 21, 2011, 11:41:41 PM
hi guys,
went out on friday up to llandovery around the dam and mountains, had a barbie by the dam, absoultly fab day!
on the way back,a car overtock us,driving like a looney!,constantly kept overtaking on a single carriageway, the last group ov 5 he overtock,he must have been about 20yds in front of the last car when the car suddenly turned right into a layby!!!!,i gritted my teeth an thought what a prick!,there was nearly a fatality there,
as i looked down to see wha speed he must have been doing (we were doing 65ish),red light flashing on the dash????,screen when off??? so im looking in front at thew road and glancing down to see whas going on?(havent had the bike long) when the low tyre pressure symbol came on flashing at 17 psi, then 16,15,14 ---in less than 30 seconds when i stopped it was on 3psi!!!.
my first thoughts were, oh shit-nearly 5oclock on friday, now im knackered????????
no probs got recovery!! :),then i was thinking!!!!,what a brill bit of technology!!!!,a few 100yds ahead were a series of bends, without this warning system it could have turned out a bit nasty,!!.
so, thank you kawasaki for this, very impressed!!!!,
but it did get me thinking,,,,,,,bluetooth all the warning system, off the bike to your intercoms, now tha would be something else,,maybe a bit annoying on certain things, but im sure they would sort tha out, what do you all think of this then????,whats your oppinions on this idea?
oh an by the way, original brigstone with 1600mls on the tyre-nice big puncture wound, so i have now got pirelli angel on there (158.00,including drive in fitting) dropped it off in my van.

Jenros, unlucky re the puncture. Funnily enough while I was reading your account, I was thinking to myself I wonder if it gives you an audible warning and then you brought up the very same topic.  I think it would be great if the warnings could be relayed through Autocom or some other system. There's an idea for the next generation of the GTR. Out of interest, how did the bike handle when you were riding with single figure psi? At least you know it works. I've been lucky, only had one puncture in the last five years.

hi guys,
well as i was travelling in a straight line, and not excessive by any meens, also the puncture was quite rapid in deflating,it didnt make a great deal ov difference, think thats what was puzzling me when i seen it come up on the dash.
Having said that, still would have been a very different story on a bend!.
All is well thou :) still think it would be something else if they could bluetooth the electronics,,,, night rider, eat ya heart out! ha ha. Cheers guys

No thanks! No more bells and whistles!  8)

If any alternative to the current view/display, then it could
be a flash-light to be seen at 5000m distance!

But no more sounds, thanks!

Sounds are useless on motorcycles unless you have a bluetooth headset, and even then what is the point.
I would make the screen flash "LOW PRESSURE" and at the same time flash the red lights either side of the LCD.
The last thing I want is something beeping at me. Beepers are for people who are asleep.
If you are asleep on a motorcycle, then you are a corpse looking for a coffin.  :o

If you are not watching your dashboard then you are not checking your speed and therefore are not in control of your bike.
The same goes for your mirrors.

Me, approx. every 10 seconds I go Left Mirror, Speedo, Right Mirror.
These are just glances but mean that I know where everything is around me and I know what speed I'm doing.
It also meant that when I had a puncture 2 years ago, I knew about it as the tyre hit 33PSI.
Plenty of time to get off the road safely.  8)

I think its just instinct to do a cursory check of everything at regular intervals. Even if you dont think you do it, you probably do do it subconsciously. It's just human nature.

It all depends on the type of road .... if I drive to the beach, so it is quite another "human nature" my eye exercises!  ::)

I don't speed so I don't have to check my mirrors every ten seconds to make sure that I don't have a copper on my tail. ;D

It's not about speeding or checking to see if you have a Copper on your tail, its about just being aware of whats going on around you, planning, anticipating, pre-empting the unexpected etc. Anyway thats my reasoning for doing what I do but I appreciate that we all have our own individual riding styles.

Observation, anticipation, assessing and planning! Can still hear instructors voice in my ear. Obs when changing position or speed. Find good planning improves enjoyment of my ride as well improving life of parts etc

Looking behind me doesn't help me plan for what lies ahead, though.
The occasional glimpse is enough unless I want to change lanes.
And then I look over my shoulder as well.
OK When I ride in a group I check my mirrors regularly to make sure I haven't lost my mate(s).
After all there is so much more you have to look out for ahead on a bike than in a car.
Potholes, dirt and other debris, gravel, side streets, animals dead and alive...
And so far I haven't met anybody who has hit something behind them.
The only time I actually hit a car happened on a slip road when I was looking behind to get onto the M25 and the idiot 2 cars in front suddenly decided to stop.

And then there is the scenery (including the ladies) as well, so if I take my eyes off the road I rather look at that.

So how do you know that you don't have some numpty/idiot/boy racer behind you who is sitting on your number plate or looking to overtake/push past you at any opportunity? - ie other bikers, car/van drivers or a rather large HGV breathing down your neck. These sort of people pose a significant risk to your safety and would affect how you deal with planning for what lies ahead.

Its plain to see that you are not going to be convinced. Re your comment above, perhaps they were displaying good observational skills and saw something that you didn't. Cars dont generally stop for no apparant reason on a slip road while merging onto a motorway unless its not safe for them to proceed and join the flow of traffic.

Checking the mirrors is a habit. How long does it take to check? A split second. There's many a time on the motorway when I know the car behind is too close of comfort.

No way are my eyes fixed on what is in front. I read far ahead as possible (this is why I hate being behind vehicles that block forward view), scan side to side and rear.

Looking behind helps plan.

Quoteperhaps they were displaying good observational skills and saw something that you didn't. Cars dont generally stop for no apparant reason on a slip road while merging onto a motorway unless its not safe for them to proceed and join the flow of traffic.
No, that guy was just stupid.
Even the driver of the car I hit (no damage and I didn't fall off) couldn't understand why this idiot suddenly stopped/slowed down and forced him to slam on the brakes.
He even apologized to me.
There was nearly 1/4 mile of slip road left and nobody in front.
OK it was my fault - I shouldn't have relied on "cars generally don't stop for no apparent reason', because that one did.
And when you try to squeeze in on a busy motorway you need to look over your shoulder for more than just a split second.

Just to make it clear, I do look in the mirrors - just not every 10 seconds!
On the MW more often than on a windy country road, though.
If I ride on a straight road and I look in the mirror and there is nobody behind me I can be sure there isn't anybody behind me 10 seconds later, so why look again? :P
And on a windy one I am far to busy to look anywhere else than where I want to go.
So it can be from every couple of seconds to every couple of minutes or even more depending on road, traffic and speed.

I started to ride bikes in Germany and believe me I know how to "observe and plan" in a haphazard mixture of slow, fast and very fast traffic aka Autobahn.
And what can I do about it if 'that car behind me is too close for comfort'? ::)
Panic? Brake  for no apparent reason and let it hit me?
On a bike I can sneak up on you and be right behind in your slip stream even if you look in your mirrors every 10 seconds if I really wanted to.
Now you see me - now you don't.
Unfortunately I haven't got that brick holder I always dreamt of.  ;D ;D ;D
And if somebody wants to overtake me let him do it.
Might give me a fright if I didn't hear him but as long as I keep to my line it's no problem because before I change my line I always look in the mirror.

I am a lifelong member of the Paranoid club.  ;D

They are not going to kill you because they are lazy.
They are not going to kill you because they are incompetent.
They are going to kill you because they are TRYING TO KILL YOU!

So, trust nobody, ALWAYS have an escape route planned, expect the unexpected, and if you do that all the time you will be fine.
Can I do it all the time? No, I'm not a God.  :(

Last time I assumed someone knew what they were doing, I bounced off a Xsara Picasso.
The time before I drove my car into the back of a Ford Ka.
But these incidents are getting less often as I learn the true depths of lazyness, incompetence, and sheer arrogance of most motorists out there.

bloody ell guys!, im still working away from home, came home tonight thought ahhh!,av a look on the ole puter!,, thinking-   praps i shouldnt have put this up now???
just to add a few things here,! wheather they may be good or bad ?-personally,i know and am confident in my riding ability, style ,speed, road positioning and my main factor,,,,safety!!!,
i had absolutly no intention what so ever in overtaking the line of vehicles that were in front of me!,i was travelling (with the flow of traffic) at a sensible, possibly more stopping distance to my mate in front of me at about 65ish!,therefore i knew my aprox speed,i was not about to overtake,an i certainly didnt need to select a lower gear!!!.
so i hope i aint gonna offend anyone on here but,,,,,,,,,,,if anyone on here think that i have bought one of these magnificently engineered piece of machinery(which to me is heaven on earth) to check my bloody mirrors every 10 seconds- you are very much in the WRONG,WRONG!.
i ride my bike for the pure joy, experiance an above all the sheer enjoyment of it :)
so as i said if i have offended anyone on here,,,,, tough!
bank holiday in 8 mins,an im sorry to say im off in the morning on my bike till monday evening,so if any of you will have the miss fortune to be following me,dont bother waving from behind cuz as you have proberly realised by now,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,i wont be looking!!!!! lol! have a good weekend guys!!!!xxxxxx

i had a new pirelli angel fitted,so have they taken some valve or some gizmo off by mistake?
thanks guys any help will give me some fire power to use against them :)

If they have broken it they will still be liable, duty of care etc. Speak to them sooner rather than later would be my advice and don't let them flannel you with twaddle.

The TPS is at the base of the tyre valve and stands about 5mm or more clear of the inside of the wheel rim.

Does sound like the fitter it broke and kept quiet about - I always tell the fitter not just the recepionist there are sensors fitted as I think the standard way of deflating the tyre does involve trashing the vlave which they usually replace with new tyres.

I think the bike and this bit of warning on the dash is brilliant. I always ride with the tyre pressure displayed.
I used to use Ultra Seal and swore by it, but have not put it in the 1400 as I am told it messes up the read out display as it gums up the pressure chip in the rim inside the tyre. Shame as with the read out and a protection (Which works. I rode some 200 miles with a nail in my tyre and did not notice it until I stopped and saw a little bit of the Ultre Seal on the outside of the tyre) you would have better peace of mind. Glad that it worked for you and you did manage to stop in time.

Yeah, I have to say that the tyre pressure info is my preferred dispay mode and a vital bit of rider info. Probably should be standard on all bikes.

Right, you want to change lanes, so you have to look into the right mirror or better even over your right shoulder before you attempt something like that.
But that still doesn't mean you have to look into the mirrors every 10 seconds.
There is a sharp corner or a roundabout coming up so you look in the mirrors because it helps you plan how to negotiate that? - I'm afraid not!
Title: Re: gtr puncture
Post by: routemaster on September 10, 2011, 02:25:39 PM
It is about regularly checking your mirrors, it isn't necessarily have to be every 10 seconds, but regular/frequent checks (depending on traffic conditions) are important to see what is happening behind you.

On an approach to a bend is just as important as anywhere else. How do you know that you don't have some numpty sat on your number plate going into a bend??? What happens if you have to unexpectedly slow down or change direction, knowing whats behind you will help inform your decision making process about what to do.

If I unexpectedly have to slow down or change direction then I have to do that regardless if I have a numbskull glued to my numberplate or not. If it's a split second decision I could as well claim that if you hadn't looked into the mirror that sudden manoeuvre hadn't been necessary because if you had looked ahead you had spotted the hazard earlier.
This discussion is totally futile.
BTW if something that close behind is going on I most likely will pick that up in my peripheral vision anyway. Especially with those big mirrors on the GTR.
Title: Re: gtr puncture
Post by: Kwikasfuki on September 10, 2011, 05:14:14 PM
And in that split second you have to make the right decision which would no doubt be helped if you're aware of your surroundings.

Prime example last week when the car infront braked sharply for no apparent reason on the motorway. Because I was aware of what was behind and to the side of me I had no hesitation in moving my bike to the middle lane in that split second.

Likewise if that happens arround a bend you're severely limiting your options if you don't have awareness of whats behind you. The best advice is in Roadcraft - always plan an exit strategy for the unexpected.

QuoteThe best advice is in Roadcraft - always plan an exit strategy for the unexpected.

You can only plan an exit strategy for situations you expect.
The best advice is to avoid the unexpected in the first place (aka defensive riding).
But I guess if you did that you would need to change your nick again. ;D
That then leaves only the sky falling on your head, for which you can't plan an exit strategy anyway.
In your case it sounds like you were either too close to the car in front, going to fast or weren't aware of what was going on in front of the car and prompted it to brake sharply. :-[
Sorry, but I just don't believe you can be 100% aware of what's going on all around you all the time.

hi guys, update!
as i said ive been working away from home for a few months,so last monday i dropped the bike off early to them,an said i would pick it up on saturday (2 day).i left my mobile number for them if they needed to contact me.
So,called in this morning, bike not ready!!!!!!!!,
why not i said?
oh we have ordered a new sensor.the "old" 1 was shot!,.it should be here on tuesday or wednesday,,,,,
right ok,im back away working monday so i will pick it up next saturday!.
so having read some of your replies reguarding this,i totally agree with what you have said about "THEY,OR HIM" was totally unaware about this!!,an its now obvious that he binned or damaged it when he tock the tyre off.
so i rang a kawasaki dealer an spoke to a guy in the workshop, just to have a bit of fire power, incase i need it!
the fitter also agreed with whats been said on here as well, also he said it is also possible if you dont know about these that they can be damaged by the tyre lever when taking off the tyre.
he said that the sensor is about 90 quid, and would have to be programmed as well, which also would have to be done,he said they charge about 12 quid,(no big deal on the 12 qiud but im ****** if im paying for the sensor.
he sugested that i get them to give me the old one for me to see, which we now know they have binned!!!!,also if they new it was damaged, why did they refit it,an also why didnt they tell me?????
whats ya thoughts on this guys??
i wanted a blast out 2day as well,,,,,cheers guys- JENROS :)

The UK hazard perception test is all about reading the conditions ahead and preparing for the unexpected. We'll just have to agree to disagree.

I don't think anyone is saying that you can be aware 100% of the time. My view of riding safely is probably contentious, but I'm a firm believer is making good progress as that keeps you aware of your surroundings. Its when you're going with the flow that you tend to switch off.

I might change my name to Terry (think Terry Griffiths and how he could grind a game of snooker to death!)

QuoteThe UK hazard perception test is all about reading the conditions ahead and preparing for the unexpected. We'll just have to agree to disagree.

That sentence is a classical oxymoron.
And just because it is written in a test doesn't change that!
Unexpected is something you can't expect or in other words to your knowledge has never happened before or seems impossible to happen, right?
When you for instance mix yellow and blue paint, you expect that the resulting colour will be green because from experience that is what always happened before.
Unexpected would be that the mixture would turn out to be red or any colour other than green because that has never happened before.
You wouldn't expect that the car in front of you suddenly turned into a horse, disappeared into thin air or took off like a plane.
But that the driver suddenly slams on the brakes, blows a tyre or looses otherwise control can and should be expected to happen!
Even if it is not very likely, but it has happened before, so it can no longer be unexpected when it happens again.
Therefore it is simply impossible to prepare for the unexpected.
So the line should read, 'preparing for anything that could possibly happen'.

Then I totally agree with what it is saying.

jenros, as Asif has said the sensors are very expensive, I would clarify initially who is paying for the new sensor and its programming. If they suggest you are, tell them to go swivel! If they have damaged your TPS then they are responsible, if it was working beforehand then I think its a fair assumption that they have damaged it.
Good luck with sorting this out.

Your mates better don't turn up in the next couple of minutes and smash my front door in because of your hunch.
