Title: London's burning
Post by: Kwikasfuki on August 08, 2011, 11:42:46 PM
WTF. Nothing to do with social deprivation, just mindless thugs. The Police should be given carte blanche authority to beat the living **** out of them.

We were watching this at work over the weekend and it brought back memories of the Bradford riots, apologies I mean disorder, dont mention the word riot in any official capacity it can work out rather expensive. I only know what I've seen on the news and even then I may be off track somewhat, but my understanding is that a person shot at a Police Officer, then that person got shot and killed by a Police Officer. Now all hell is breaking loose.
When I was much younger I used to live in Holland and we lived very close to a border checkpoint into Germany. There was on occasion the odd spot of bother and I can distinctly recall the Polizie using water canons and boy are they effective for knocking the steam out of people and sending them on their way. Its unfortunate that we wont use such tactics.

Birmigham and Liverpool as well.

Jeez - unbelievable. Cameron will be committing political suicide if he goes ahead with Police cuts now.

It's a well stated fact that apparently when the Police cuts are implemented and trust me they have already started it will have no impact whatsoever on crime stats or the level of service the public can expect.  ::)

Howw about water cannon with an added ultraviolet marker? Police could then at their leisure go out and round up all the brave and hard men with their covered faces by the simple wave of a torch. Or maybe the police response should be escalated more maybe a few well bounced rubber bullets backed up by a tear gas round or two would make everyone think twice about getting out in the streets to cause damage and destruction to property of others

We need the Swiss riot police, or failing that the Japanese, those guys come equipped with water cannon, proper batons and tear gas, they'll get the job done!

My friends business, which he built from nothing over the last 20 years has been burned to the ground, his opinions on sorting the issue are, understandably, very extreme.

Surrey sent 100 officers to help, the remaining  one looks lonely now.

Police cuts now, I don't think so!!

While I agree with your broad sentiment there are two problems that would follow this: someone is likely to get hurt whereupon all hell would break loose in the media with hand-wringing liberals being given centre stage; there's no doubt in my mind that the Police's new found freedom to operate will be abused by a minority.

Mind you, on one thing we are in full agreement - I am sick of hearing them being called 'protesters', they're not protesters, they're thugs and thieves.

QuoteInspector Gadget web site (http://inspectorgadget.wordpress.com/2011/08/09/we-dont-need-the-army-we-need-the-order-to-charge/): At the briefing, many of my officers wanted cast-iron guarantees from Silver Command that no individual officers would be suspended and prosecuted if we use force and a rioter became seriously injured. This was not forthcoming. There are at least 12 County forces here now, 'Remember Tomlinson' was being whispered everywhere at the FCP.
I'm somewhat discomfited to read this from someone who is apparently a service police officer. I understand his angst but anyone who has seen the video of what happened to Ian Tomlinson and doesn't think that officer should have been charged has a different view of how they want the Police to act than I do. They are subject to the same laws as you and I are and, whatever the provocation, must not be given carte blanche to use force in any way they want to. There must be a middle ground between standing by and attacking a member of the public who obviously wasn't a threat.

Stoketim, as NB has said my comment was re the karma thing. I haven't fallen out with anyone trust me. If someone has taken offence at my comment and NB's initial posting on this topic and clearly they have, then thats a shame.

Why a water cannon ? A proper one would get my vote as would proper bullets

Here's a story of bike that got stolen from the rider in the riots (http://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/News/newsresults/General-news/2011/August/aug0911-bike-jacked-in-riot/Post.aspx?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter)

I'd like to think if I was going down I'd have driven it straight into the rioters

Hello all, not been on the site for a few weeks. It's very hard to watch all the looting and fire raising, I wanted to reach into the TV screen and rip a few of them to pieces. As a serving plod, it's also hard to hear folk with opinions at either end of the spectrum. The man who died at the G20 summit should not have been decked like that. No excuse, especially as he was walking away. The only thing I'd like to say is, with the way officers get dealth with by the complaints people, I can understand why the lads are reluctant to go toe to toe with the rioters, you stand there taking   sh!te because you have to, they throw mono blocks, rocks , anything and we can't reply, if a PC was to throw something back he would out on his arse before you knew it.  This will happen again from time to time, no mistake about that, a few hundred getting 12 weeks in the nick will be no deterrent for the morons who invert the blame and give themselves a warped sense of permission. And as for all that pish about engaging with communites, well, maybe it's these communities who should try and engage with society themselves.
Ah, thats better.

to top it off no change in plans to make overall reductions in actual uniformed officers on street, making even more stressful for all forces not just MET, as well as left handed tree hugging do gooders, far right groups can get foot in door if police arent given tools free from political intervention to do job they want to. and breathe, excuse da rant :'(
