Yamaha USA recommend that you leave your FJR 1300 at home
A potential gearbox lock could cause the rear wheel to lock up
Oooh er
Hopefully it won't catch fire like some older BMWs used to...
Years ago, I went touring as part of a group using my (then new) Ducati ST2. Everyone suggested calling the rescue services before we left the UK, to make sure that they were waiting when the inevitable happened. Well, it never did - the worst problem that the ST suffered over many miles of European touring was a leaking clutch slave cylinder, replaced under warranty on my return to the UK.
Two FJR's in the group did, however experience gearbox problems (one ridden home, the other trailered) and my brother's Triumph Tigers (two different bikes) decided that two cylinders would be enough rather than three. Apparently coil failures!
The FJR's were the then current five - speed models and probably have no connection with today's six - speeders, however to me it just says that the unexpected is just as likely to happen to such bikes with a fine history of reliability as it is to those with a less established reputation.

Bob who you met Rog, has a FJR and it has to go back for a gearbox issue, they want it for three weeks in total to sort it, apparantly its 18 hours labour just to get the engine out and on the bench, luckily Yamaha are paying. He is a little concerned when it all goes back together it will be right.

I recall reading that the gearbox drive cogs (I think) were changed in size or pitch or something which provided more space to add a 6th gear , maybe I'm wrong there
