Title: Linked brakes
Post by: Moogus on December 16, 2020, 06:26:45 PM
Hi all,

I've had a nosey through this subject, on this forum, but can't seem to find if the linked brakes can be de-linked.

Is there a way of doing this simply? Or maybe reducing the effect the back brake has on the front wheel when only using the back brake?

I just prefer to brake the wheels myself,  when I want to, not when the bike wants to.....

Thanks 😊

The very best way to un-link them is to ride less than 12mph.  This is not the optimal solution however.  Let me peruse our US site ZG/GTR zggtr.org forum and see what I come up with.  It won't be tonight as I have a date with my wife and some Saki and probably won't be in any condition to assist until next morning hopefully.  What year bike, by the way?  Ok, nevermind...2011.

Ok, here's a link to our site and the post describing a fix pre-Saki...

http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=13655.0

Not sure if you can see it or not without being registered (I'm one of the admins there but I've been registered since dirt and everything is cached so I slip right in) and you would think I know it but the Saki is on the boil and I need to take care of it you see.

Ok, just tried the link with edge and the pictures don't show.  Not sure if it's Edge or the site.  No matter it's easy enough to sign up...

I will.  My local Saki place just reopened for inside dining...can't wait.

I'm sure there is a way to de-link them, let me have a think about it.

Thanks Jim and LW,

Your US forum (your link) suggests a way to do it, as your are no doubt aware, but it's a little old now. I did wonder if fitting the abs block from the 08/09 bikes is the simplest way.

Has this, or any other method, been tried over here?

Daisy, that sounds like a good set up and a fair compromise.

As is your 2011..

Thanks Daisy.

Do I assume, therefore, that your front set up is: 1 pipe out of the 2010 abs block going to a splitter where your 08, over the front mudguard,  is used to supply the front left caliper, the original front right pipe occupies the other branch of the splitter?
Then capping off any 2nd pipe from the block to the front?

I'm wondering why Kawasaki changed their minds on linked braking?  The 08/09s never had it and the Kawasaki engineers poo  :shit: ed  in writing that they purposely did not implement linked brakes on the gen 1's for performance reasons.  Maybe they wanted to copy other bikes with linked brakes and didn't really do a good job of it early on.

I can't see what the big issue is with them personally. It's like most things, you get used to them and adapt your riding style accordingly. My last few bikes have all had it and neither has made me feel uncomfortable or lacking control of the bike.

I can see what you're saying LW. My particular issue is, more than likely,  caused by my having ridden since I was 12, right up to 10 years ago when I left biking for a while, only ever riding 'normal' braked motorcycles. I noticed a difference when I bought my gtr.

To be fair, I've only had it since August and only ridden 700 miles on it, mostly 2 up. I'm not happy with the feel of the front brakes and find them grabby at slower speeds. I do pull to a stop using front brake only and find the grabbing worse when pulling up. I never had that with unlinked systems. My plan is to swap out the front pads, maybe discs too, and see how that feels.
I've been trained to stop with right foot down, hence stopping with front brake only. I will find it difficult to swap to left foot down and stop using rear brake only.
Maybe I just need a bit more time to adjust and gel with the bike...I am much slower these days too 😑

On my 2011 GTR the front discs were changed under warranty because of the grab - release problem when stopping. The same happened with my Versys 1000, both at around 7,500 miles. When I sold the Versys at 14,000 miles, the problem was starting to repeat itself. Eventually it became so noticeable that I couldn't predict exactly where the bike would stop, as it varied by a few feet depending on whether it was a "grab" or "release" moment.

I'm with Daisy on this. I hate Linked Brakes.
The 2010-2014 are pretty bad.
The 2015-2017 are better but still slightly intrusive and no safer for me.
I've ridden a CBR1000, several Goldwings, and 3 GTRs fitted with Linked brakes.
Yes, they may be safer for someone with less experience than me, but if that is the excuse for their existence, why not have the computers limit every motorcycle to no more than the posted speed limit? That would be safer too, as would requiring 4 wheels, airbags, and a steel cage around you.  :taz:

If I want more front brake, I'll apply more front brake.
I ride a motorcycle, I don't ride a computer that rides the motorcycle for me.

ABS is different as it's a safety system and almost never intrudes on normal riding.
Linked brakes =  :shit: :shit: :shit: :shit: :shit:

You don't really have an opinion on this do you?  :mfr_lol:

I've had plenty bikes with linked brakes a couple of which were GTRs

I've got to be honest and say that I haven't ever experienced any adverse  feeling or interference with a linked brake set up with my riding, but we all ride differently and have different expectations

That's just too logical, Rog.  I'm going to have to report you to management.

Right then....interesting and varied views, thankyou.

It'll be new discs, pads and fluid to begin with 🤔 (can always explore other routes, as suggested, once I've got more experience with my gtr).
