Yes, what the hell, it's never too early to start planning and I think the early bird will catch the worm.
In reality it is highly likely that due to Covid which is undoubtedly still going to be an issue in 2021, although hopefully not on the current scale, many people will opt to take a break in the UK to avoid quarantine issues, flight delays, being unable to obtain insurance etc and therefore demand for UK holidays is going to go through the roof impacting on availability as well as prices.
Therefore to test the water how many would be interested in four nights away up in Scotland, arriving Thursday 20th May and departing on Monday 24th May 2021?
This year although there were only two of us who attended, Pete & I, I think it's fair to say we had a great time and it was worth the effort.
The plan as before would be to stay at one location for simplicity and use it as a base. Location wise I'm thinking Tyndrum & hopefully Tyndrum Lodges as it is not too far North, it is ideally situated to explore in many directions, the accommodation is spacious, clean etc and the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Parking is safe, flat tarmac, away from the road within the grounds of the Lodges and the parking is covered by CCTV although you can see the bikes from your room depending on which way you are facing.
Comment below if you fancy this so we can get an idea of numbers.
Sounds good to me.... my plans are dependant on my circumstances though, so I wouldn't be able to commit at this stage
Yes please.
Count us in. Me and the Mrs.
I'll be up for this, but as Steve had just pointed out to me, I say that every year!
Should be fine for me Steve, either alone or accompanied by wife or daughter. (Or perhaps both of them!)
If anyone is serious about going I suggest you book now. Tyndrum Lodges, Tyndrum. Thursday 20th May to Monday 24th May 2021. Four nights in total. You can book direct with The Lodges but they want full payment immediately or you can book with Booking.com and pay nothing until the day of arrival. Both options have a cancellation policy which is almost, if not identical.
I know of two people who have booked already to avoid disappointment. :whistling:
We are booked at Ben More Lodge in Crianlarich for those dates through Booking.com
Used the place before and it's great. Not too far from Tyndrum for a meet up.
are either the Tyndrum lodges or Ben More pet friendly ?
EDIT: just seen that Ben More is very pet friendly
Tyndrum Lodges are not pet friendly

I got a Black Friday deal on the hotel. It ran out about a hundred quid cheaper. The Lodges were also unavailable through Booking.com But they could still be available through other sites or direct..
I had a great time on my trip to Scotland last year and absolutely no regrets of my last minute decision to go and keep Mr Lonewolf company.
For the 2021 proposal I hung back simply because it clashed with what would have been my preferred time for another foray into Europe, but the way things are shaping up with this virus business it now looks sensible to plan to cross the channel in late summer as hopefully by then there will be vaccines in place and things will have opened up a bit.
Having decided I would commit to the Scotland meet in May I looked at the accommodation again and found that a "Black Friday" deal had flashed up at the hotel next door which would save me £100.00 Double checking against the lodges I found they were no longer available on Booking.com so presumably they have now sold their allocation (although it is quite possible that they could be available direct or though other booking sites).
If you have already booked your rooms at Tyndrum lodges, don't worry, I have not dodged them because anything is wrong with them, they are a great place to stay but the money I have saved will get me another night out somewhere – maybe extending this trip or another night out on the bike later in the year.
The third video from last year's trip has been sitting 95% finished for weeks now, I'll try and knuckle down and get it done.
Looking forward to catching up with you in May. Pete

I DO hope this happens.
By May I would like to think that a lot of the population will be vaccinated and all will be well.
I sit here as snow is forecast in the next few days, yes even down here on the south coast, and a silent partyless Covid New Year looms.
I know we all have a bit of "the winter blues" but it will be SO nice to meet up with everyone for a bit of riding and a social beer or two in the evening.

You can still travel on your bike, for some it may be their only form of transport. Shopping is the obvious authorised use in addition to travel to and from your place of work.
Have a read of this.
https://www.visordown.com/news/general/does-riding-motorcycle-count-exercise-lockdown
Contrast the above with this.....
https://www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/news-and-views/news/2020/may/motorcycling-classed-as-exercise-in-new-south-wales
Or this.....
https://www.bikerandbike.co.uk/motorcycling-burns-between-170-and-600-calories-per-hour/
Motorcycling has been classed as a form of exercise for many years. It cannot suddenly not be considered a form of exercise simply because there is a pandemic.
I have a degenerative spinal condition which prevents me from impactive sports, I used to love running but have been medically advised not to continue running as it will damage my health.
Motorcycling on the other hand is great for building core strength in addition to it being low impactive on all areas of the body. I for one will, when the weather improves be out on my bike regardless of any lockdown. The key is not to take the piss. Even if I went out for 20-30 minutes that would be beneficial to me as a workout and coupled with the dog walking, I would consider myself to have had a positive day.

Fortuanely it has happened at a time of yaer that I would not be riding so much anyway. I have just put two of the bikes on SORN now though, I don't see why I should be paying VED on bikes I can't ride. You need to balance this with the positives; if you do come over there will be 2% more herring on your plate and should you buy a tampon it will be a bit cheaper.
Steve, did you have a bit of inside information when you picked those dates?
It looks like that hotels in ENGLAND can re-open from 17/05 so let's hope that Scotland will be following a similar timetable and this can still go ahead.
I'm really looking forward to a decent run and I hope we can hang on to those days to save the hassle of re-booking.
Watch and wait I suppose...
Self contained accommodation, such as the Lodges will be reopening all being well from the 12th April, so we should be fine. I've spoken with Nicola this evening and told her under no circumstances must she :censored: this up for us.
Nicola seems to have heeded my warnings to her and has started to relax the restrictions in Scotland. Everything is looking quite positive so start brushing up on your Scottish and get your passport/visa applications in. :mfr_lol:

Fair enough, I guess I shouldn't be surprised at this time of the year. They've probably had a rush of online bookings since young Nicola advertised the Scottish exit strategy from the restrictions.

I'm in the same place - are you there for 4 nights?
If so I'll certainly bump into you, lets hope we don't start some sort of fracas over the last rasher of bacon at breakfast (assuming such thing is available).
The hotel is just the other side of the fence from the lodges where some others are staying so we are all pretty close together.
Pross if you manage to get work into line and want some company on the ride up, let me know.
I certainly will 👍
The first year which was cancelled I had booked a B&B in the Lake District for the day before to break up the ride up 👍 not sure what to do yet still awaiting reply when I check it's still pending 🤬🤬
Yes, 4 nights.
It's also just through the fence from the "Real Food Cafe" which does real breakfasts for half the price of the hotel's continental breakfast.

The real food cafe was open last year when we went, but as you'd expect, it was closed for sit down meals. The option was you ordered from a takeaway hatch at the front of the building and ate outside or in your car. The menu was limited though but still adequate. I think we ate there, Thursday and Friday and then went to the Tyndrum Inn for a hearty evening meal, Saturday and Sunday. Alternatively there is the shop at the Green Wellie, either way we've never lost a participant through starvation or malnutrition yet on a bike meet. :mfr_lol:
That's good.
Without food I could starve to death in just 5 or 6 months.

Just curious about numbers...
Also do we want to pencil in a couple of optional rides out, or will we make things up as we go along? Some people may want to do thier own thing of course and the weather at the time will have a bearing.

Just three weeks to go now and I've settled the bill for my room in advance, so it's getting real.
I've not attended a meet where so many others have been present before – is the expectation that everyone will do their own thing in terms of rides out etc.? I'm just conscious that this "rule of six" thing may still be hanging over us and that a larger group of bikes may encourage a tug from the local constabulary if noticed.
Or do we simply get up there and make it up as we go along...
The Tyndrum Inn (just up the road from the Lodges and Ben Doran Hotel) provided Steve and I with good evening meals last year but I can't recall that they had that much external seating if this is a requirement in Scotland - it certainly got busy inside so we may need to think about reserving a couple of tables (for no more than six people!) for the following day if that is where most of us should want to meet up or eat on an evening.
Re the above.
Generally what happens is that some folk will want to explore on their own and more importantly at their own pace, we also normally get a 'group' who fancy going out collectively and some folk who are simply content to stay at the digs and chill out reading a book and having a pint/coffee. These meetings are very informal and no one is pressured into doing anything they feel uncomfortable with. Whilst it is a group event, it is also YOUR weekend away and I want everyone to enjoy themselves and do what pleases them and come away with some fantastic memories of the event.
From past experience, the evenings are when the majority get together for a bite to eat and a chat about their daily adventures. I shall contact the Tyndrum Inn and see what the rules are regarding booking tables, numbers etc, etc and update this thread accordingly.
****What is important is that we have no accidents, no injuries and no damaged bikes! It may be quite busy in the area we are staying at. There will most likely be a few foreign tourists in hire cars which can lead to some interesting incidents.
One year when Nigel & I visited Scotland, twice in one day we had a German plated coach approaching us, head on, on our side of the road. In 2019 when I visited Scotland I witnessed three accidents in two days when overseas visitors forgot what side of the road they should be driving on and collided with other vehicles. The worst incident was a local heavily pregnant lady who had to swerve to avoid an error of judgement from an oncoming vehicle driving on the wrong side of the road and she ended up going down a steep embankment.
It is not uncommon for motorists to stop without warning to take a photo through their window or for motorists not to appreciate how narrow single track roads are and try to squeeze their mobile home past you between passing places! It all adds to the excitement!! :mfr_lol:
A normal day on our roads then :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol:

Steve is spot on as always .. it really is an easy few days .. if you want to ride out then ride.. stay in and read a book and chill ?? Do that, no one is bothered as long as we all enjoy ourselves that is the main point. Catch up with a pint in the evening talk shit have a laugh and make new friends..
I have a masters degree in shit talking :mfr_lol:
Right chaps, I have spoken with the Tyndrum Inn which is a very short walk from Tyndrum Lodges and the Mutha Ben Doran Hotel.
They have confirmed that they have tables inside and out front for diners and they believe that by the 20th May the restrictions are expected to have been lifted which will enable us to eat inside as a group if we wish to do so rather than being required to sit outside.
They suspect that groups may be limited to a dozen so that should work well for us. However we will have to book a table each night so considering this is the only pub in the village I recommend that that is what we do. Last year when Pete and I attended in July after the restrictions had been lifted, the pub was rammed.
Let me know if you intend to eat at the pub please and I shall provisionally book the table/s. There are other places to eat in the village if they are open, burger places but the pub will provide a more welcoming venue probably.

My expectation is that I will ride on all three days as long as the weather is not too foul, any more than four inches of snow and I'm staying under the duvet.
Please include me in your calculations for the evening meal at the Tyndrum Inn, it was handy, reasonably priced and what I had was good quality. At least I'm assured of one meal a day although if I have lunch at the fish and chip shop in Mallaig again this year I may skip the fish course on the evening.
It was a fair reminder about the driving standards up there. Generally I have found it not much worse than anywhere else and the natives are fine, but as you say I have encountered a lot of foriegn drivers in hire cars and it only takes a slip of their concentration... don't let it put anyone off though, it is not a suicide mission to ride up there but take your caution up a notch.
Right folks, I have booked a table at the Tyndrum Inn which will seat up to 8 people for Thursday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday evening. I have requested a time of 18:30 each evening which will give us time to get back to the accommodation after a ride during the day, showered etc and tarted up to hit the wild streets of Tyndrum.
Covid restrictions permitting we can eat inside, but failing that we will be seated outside. I'm sure if it's a nice evening and we'd prefer to eat outside they will accommodate that request.
I hope this is okay with everyone.
Well done Steve, and thank you
Confirmation received back from the Tyndrum Inn. Our dining facilities are booked.
Due to extreme laziness I have just cancelled my booking for the Muthu Ben Doran hotel
And booked 4 nights at the Tyndrum Inn instead.
See you there.
There is at least 1 room available at the Muthu Ben Doran now.
We could have carried you from the Mutha Ben Doran to the Tyndrum Inn if needed, they are that close to each other. :mfr_lol:
Nice one Steve ... look forward to meeting everyone
Don't be alarmed but apparently it has been snowing in Scotland and not too far from where we are staying!

Just to confirm that I have booked a table for me and my mate at the Ben More Lodge for the Friday evening but have left Saturday and Sunday open. I would like to add my thanks to Steve for his efforts in arranging this get together and look forward to seeing you all in just over 2 weeks.
Hi Guys
Was thinking about meeting up with this gang of rebribates on the Sat 22nd at Tyndrum and then going out on the days jaunt ,would you have any timings as to when and where you would be going ..my friend (not on forum but a Gtr owner may also show his face ) Nothing planned just a wee idea to put some faces to names this only day we could make it due to various commitments Kenny
Kenny, thanks for posting. Firstly if you live in Scotland, why aren't we all dossing down at your place to save our money? :mfr_lol:
Unfortunately at this stage, speaking for myself as I don't know what others have planned, I have no plans, I'm just going to take each day as it comes. What I do know for a fact though is that I and a few others will be in the Tyndrum Inn at 18:30 hrs each evening as we need food and we have a table booked.

Couldn't help myself, need the break, booked Tyndrum in the rain and strung it onto the back of a few days in the highlands. Should be soaked, frozen, filthy and fleeced by the time we (got a buddy coming on his BMW just to keep the score even) arrive at Tyndrum - can't wait - Bonny Bloody Scotland here we come.

Thats a bit naughty, they didn't ask me for a deposit, they obviously want to make sure you turn up! :mfr_lol:
Jennifer said a Steve Young had a booking, I said we were part of the same group. I'm not sure if we're eating in the restaurant or the pub. Probably be more room in the restaurant if the pub is as busy as they expect, apparently they've been inundated.
Re the deposit, they probably trust you!
They told you I'd made a booking and gave you my name?
Straight up breach of GDPR! That's free food and drink for us all weekend or a £100000 fine. :mfr_lol:

Just received email from Tyndrum reminding of booking details, included was check in from 1600hrs to 2000hrs.
If arriving early best to let them know.
I've been in touch with Tyndrum Lodges, 4pm is the earliest booking in time they will permit as this is to allow them sufficient time to sanitise the room from the previous occupant. I should have remembered that from last year! :whistling:
If you arrive prior to that time and the room is ready they'll probably let you in though.
Same for us, 4pm at the earliest.

We will be at the green welly at 10am
See you there and anyone else who wants to meet up for a chat.

We are currently in Crianlarich. We'll be at the Green Welly for 10am if that is the general plan
Just enjoyed a good meal in good company at the venue.... great to see and meet you all, have a great day tomorrow ride safe and enjoy...don't forget the pic's
Well done and well organised Steve ,
Well that's it for another year.
It's our last evening in Tyndrum before we all head back to our respective homes tomorrow.
I would like to thank everyone who attended the event and I hope everyone enjoyed themselves and has no regrets about travelling the many miles to Scotland and experiencing its traditional weather.
If anyone has taken photos etc and they would like to show them off, please add them to this thread which will remain a 'Sticky' so it will always be easy to find in the adventure section for future reference.
Thanks again, everyone have a safe ride home and hopefully see you all again somewhere next year.

Had a very enjoyable time meeting up with some very enjoyable members 👍 what a fantastic incident free trip .
My Dainese waterproof suit excelled expectation lol 😂👍
Thank you also Rynglieder ( Peter ) for your chaperone duties for this trip and some of the sights taken too looking forward to the next when hopefully everything is normal 👍 take care and ride safe everyone 🏴👍👍
Well, that was about 1350 miles of incident free and mostly enjoyable riding (who can ever really love the M6?). The weather could have been better, but then again it could have been so much worse, there was nothing that stopped us from riding and highland scenery is just as majestic under a bit of cloud.
Once again, thank you to you all for your company and to Lonewolf for pitching the idea. It was good to meet new people to attach some faces to names that I have known on the forum and some of you will now have suffered the trauma of seeing mine.
GerTRude has had a hot bath and the wife has given me a blast with the Kartcher, so we are ready to go again as soon as the opportunity arises.
I found that I was not taking many photos this year, partly due to the fact that I had visited most of the same locations last year, but what I have taken are now on my Flickr photo stream to look at:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/rynglieder/albums/72157719263878024 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/rynglieder/albums/72157719263878024)
They should be there for as long as I keep my subscription up, I think my settings allow people to download my photos, so if anyone wants to grab a copy of anything they can feel free. I may post some of them directly onto the forum over time so that there is a permanent record if I should let Flickr go.
Hopefully you are all back safe, see you next time round.
Pete.
Pete, thanks for hosting the photos, very nice they are too. Glad you enjoyed yourself and didn't find the break tedious as you'd been before. Next year we will identify a different venue, somewhere further south, perhaps Glasgow? :whistling:

Apologies to all the guys that I met "briefly it must be said" on this "Jolly boys ride meet"
made the Friday night in the boozer and a ride out on the Saturday with Steve and Nigel.. but a dam cold I had a few weeks before which had cleared after a course of antibiotics decided to return the Saturday morning which gradually got worse.. already had a taste of this dam flu and knew what to expect when it gets a good hold.. so decided to call it a day and ride home on the Sunday before the symptoms got worse. managed to get another course of stronger antibiotics off the Quack.. hopefully this time it will clear and bugger off as it costing me a fortune in :shit: rolls
roll on next year.. but lets head south.. got bloody soaked the short time I was in jock land :hammer: but on the bright side the midges never had a enough time to feast on me.. most likely knew I had the bloody flu
You got it in one Tony, Once I'd committed there was no turning, just resigned myself to staying upright and ride the 11 miles around to where I'd started. I should have looked at the route rather than excepting it out of hand. Isn't the first and I'm sure not the last time I get the garmin adventure route when not expecting it. :stupid:
Maybe I'm getting lazy, sometimes it's easier to do a video than a write up and add photos.
Here's the first of definitely four, possibly five videos which I have created from the Scotland trip. A new video is released each Friday.
Check out the video if you like and some of my previous videos if they sound like they may appeal to you.
There's usually a mixture of bike footage, stills and drone footage in each video.
Excellent Steve, as usual, I know that I have told you this before but your videos provide my biking fix whilst I'm unable to ride, so keep them coming, waiting for Fridays beats waiting for a weekly edition of MCN
I hadn't realised that there wold be at least 4 videos of our Scotland meeting, so I'm looking forward to the next instalment(s)
For those of you who haven't seen Steve's productions on You Tube, then I heartily suggest that you check them out as they are really very good .... keep up the good work Steve

Just thinking (yeah I know that's unusual) but is it too early to gather some ideas for a meeting in 2022 for example, where, when, and who ?
I know its early days but no harm in starting to think about it
I'm already working on the task. :mfr_lol:
I'm thinking rent a very large property from sleeps 12. Com possibly in Cornwall Devon or Somerset for example that way we are all together, we can eat at a local pub, there's usually one in most villages.
Interesting
Quote from: O.C. on June 26, 2021, 02:15:44 PMInteresting
In a good way, or, no, that's not for me? No point in me pursuing it if it doesn't appeal to folk. It was just something which Nigel threw into the pot whilst we were in Scotland and I thought it was a good idea and could actually work out cheaper per person than paying for four nights accommodation per person.
Interesting in a good way
I hadn't seen or even heard about sleeps 12.com , every day is a school day as they say
It's definitely worth looking in to
No, I'd never heard of that website either, but Nigel assures me that there are many interesting websites on't interwebby thing, covering all sorts of specialist interests, if you get my drift.
Quote from: Lonewolf on June 27, 2021, 08:20:35 PMNo, I'd never heard of that website either, but Nigel assures me that there are many interesting websites on't interwebby thing, covering all sorts of specialist interests, if you get my drift.
Yip, I get your drift........I think :mfr_lol:
:mfr_lol: Listen up .. "sleeps 12.com" is a site I have used for many years. They are of course big properties that are spotless usually with a pool jacuzi nice decking and view etc many bedrooms and plenty of space. We usually order a Tesco delivery for the afternoon of arrival so that way you don't have to take ANY food or booze with you ... even more important on a bike. For 3/4 nights ... a long weekend it maybe £3500 or so but between 12 people it can work out at £300 quid each which is just a bit cheaper than for example Tyndrum Lodges where we stayed in Scotland and of course much more luxurious.
SO in an ideal world you would need 12 people who would commit to such a few days. The more the cheaper. Someone has to order the food delivery and booze which then has to be paid for. Someone has to book it and there is no "change of mind" or "it looks a bit wet I wont bother" type of shit. If you say you are coming then you have to stick by your word and stump up your money way in advance with no refund if you change your mind ( obviously everyone else would then have to pay more)
So there you have the basics. It would be lovely but you have to commit and stand by your word. There are no refunds if you change your mind or throw a wobbly. Top class accommodation for 3 nights or so.
Check out the site "sleeps12.com" and take a look. It could take off and be the best "Annual meet up" ever but it needs some sorting. Not wishing to take it away from Steve but I would be happy to sort ... but there can be no messing around.
Post your thoughts on here.
Sounds like a good idea 👍. My problem is booking the dates 🤬.
Do we have any chefs on the site 🤔 :mfr_lol:

Don't make me laugh, I overheard you speaking on the phone while we were in Scotland to your accountant telling them to transfer funds to your offshore account to avoid being detected by the man from the Inland Revenue.

Rusty,
if the timing is right re harvest/planting (for me) I'd be in for houseshare rather than hotel if it's cheaper or considerablely better quality.
Well it's taken a month, but I have finally found some time this morning to look at two of Steve's videos, and very well done they are again.
I'd be interested in a "sleeps 12" or similar for next year, it would all depend on dates of course, so if it is pitched I will see how it works out with the other things life has teed up for me. Location would be a factor as well, if it's Scunthorpe that will be the week I'm washing my hair.
Not too bothered about a bloke doing the cooking, although I could probabaly handle Nigella.
Stay safe.
Pete.
You might need both hands for Nigella :mfr_lol:
I've been telling you all that Steves videos are good,
Can I have that Fiver now Steve ?
