Title: Suspension Settings
Post by: BigAlan on July 28, 2011, 11:44:34 AM
I take delivery of my new GTR on Sep 1st, black with extra's, as someone who is 6' 3" and 16St is there any suspension settings i could change from standard to make the ride easier?

I am no expert and have had Sprint ST's for the last few years but now i needed a proper bike, so i would expect the stock suspension would suit Mr average and not me, i am far from average.

I read about the screen, would the purchase of a taller one be useful?

I cant wait until i get it, the Sprint is sat in the garage looking lost.

If you're unsure about suspension settings, get them done from a professional. Whereabouts in the country are you? I can provide details of two suspension specialists that I know of.

As for the screen, at 6'3" a taller one would be advisable. I suggest you look at the Calsci range. I've tried a few and found the Calsci to suit me best as has Boomer who is teller than you

I'd recommend a visit to MCT in Stowmarket to get your suspension set up. They're not exactly local to you but people travel from Scotland to them to have it done. They do a good job IME to the extent that even Lyn noticed the change from the pillion position on the Hayabusa and suggested we take our other bikes there.

I am almost exactly the same height and weight as you and yes you will need to alter the suspension, there is a settings doc on here that's a good place to start, but basically more preload and damping on the rear and the same on the front. The standard settings are for a 65kg rider and way too soft for us at 95+ :D

I thought the front was a nightmare to set up, it's not it's the totally awful OE front tyre, if you can get the tyres changed to PR3s before it leaves the shop....do it!

Screens, my favourite topic....not!

Calsci extra large if you want total 'windscreen'/still air effect, or Cee Baileys euro cut if you want a sporty touring screen. I have tried;

MRA to low

Puig  good great looking but too low for the motorway for long periods

Calsci large ok, but XL is better for taller folk

Cee Baileys Euro Cut like it, Ultra Tour Domed good but too big for my tastes and the Calsci XL is better anyway

Sounds like a nightmare, but it's not!! Oncce set up for you it is a GREAT bike and the more I ride mine the more I love it. 8 weeks and nearly 4000 miles say it all really ;D

I've got a CalSci large at 6' & I have to duck an 1" for total quiet so you prob need an XL  i.e. 4.75" taller than OE screen on 2010/11 models.

Suspension settings given on this forum would be a good base setting, suit me at "about" 16st  ;)

Welcome BigAlan,
If you want the wind over your head then you will need the CalSci XL for sure.
I have the old XL (+6" over the stock 2008 screen) and could do with the newer +7.5"

As for being big, yer not that big.
I'm 6'4" and 26St.  ;D

if you can afford it get the suspension setup by a pro.
There are a few around the country and they are usually worth every penny.
Mine was done by a place in Suffolk.

Anybody got a lead on this doc here for suspension settings?

Thanks
