Title: Flash ooooooh oooooh, saviour of the GTR :-)
Post by: Boomer on September 01, 2020, 06:07:17 PM
Back in 2016 I had my ECU Flashed by Steve Sefsick in Florida whilst there on holiday and I loved the difference his Decel flash made to my 07 1400GTR, especially the low rpm torque gains, but it suffered from a flat spot at around 4k rpm that led to the throttle sometimes hunting at constant speed and whilst it got rid of most of the throttle snatchiness, there was still some there.

Fast forward to 2020 and I just had my flash updated by Michael Cox who does Shoodaben (https://sites.google.com/site/shoodabenengineering/ (https://sites.google.com/site/shoodabenengineering/)) flashes in Europe.
I had Michael install the new Mountain Runner Premium flash and whilst this requires the use of 96RON or higher petrol, I chose this as I no longer commute so the extra cost is of Super petrol no longer matters to me. There is the regular Mountain Runner flash available if you prefer to stick to Premium 95RON petrol.

So, what's it like? Well, that flat spot is totally gone and the remaining snatchiness in the throttle totally eliminated. I went for a ride around Essex and Suffolk yesterday with some friends and got to try her out in a real world setting. We rode just about every road type apart from dirt and boring motorways/dual-carriageways and whilst Essex and Suffolk don't have any mountains, they are far from flat.

The power from 1500rpm is utterly linear, totally predictable, and utterly relentless. This gives you confidence after just a few miles to push it quite hard. I only had one minor twitch all afternoon and that was because I got overconfident on a brand new rear PR4GT. It's like having a new bike after 13 years and 75,000 miles.😁

I can't recommend Steve and Michael highly enough. Steve has developed an awesome flash for the GTR and the fast and efficient turnaround by Michael made the whole process relatively painless.

Had a run up around the Dale's and buttertubs today and would have given anything for a nice smooth throttle...
Your mapping sounds so much nicer than standard.

Could you possibly post the contact details etc for the Europe mapping, I only seem to get the info for shoodaben engineering in florida.

Can you give an idea of the process involved for this?

Remove your seat.
Remove the toolkit and the box it sits in - 4 screws (probably security screws but they come out ok).
Unplug the ecu and pull it out of its rubber holder.
Take it (with some paper for crumpling up and packing) to your nearest dpd counter and post it.

Contact Michael first and he will send all instructions with pictures.
Post it and 4 days later you have it back.   Sweet.

Thanks, I had mine flashed at Hilltop motorcycles back in 2016, difficult question but would it make a difference, I presume things do improve over time. Having been previously flashed would that make a difference?

That sounds interesting; one of the things that is making me hold on to my GSX1400 is that I like the power (or torque I suppose) that it has down at the lower revs.

Is there any improvement in the way it picks up in the 6th / OD gear? I always feel as if the GTR needs knocking down a gear to overtake at motorway speeds, again the GSX seems to roll on better.

Got the details from Michael reference the flash  Sounds very good.
Got as far as the toolbox removal and hit the 4 security screws  :hammer:
How did you go about removing them, nothing in my limited toolbox fits the bill

Use a mini pair of vice grips on the head which is showing. That works and then replace them with stainless steel bolts

I must admit, I've tried mine and couldn't get the screws out. Must try harder !

The GSX is a naked bike so you will never be running at 120mph for any distance as your neck would snap.
The GTR is a fast tourer and can do 120 all day. Very different bikes.
There is a small improvement in 6th.
You need to remember that 6th is intended for cruising distances so you will need to knock it down if you want hard acceleration, but with the flash it pulls clean from 1500rpm and quite hard from 3500 up.

Use the flat screwdriver bit that best matches the size of the screw head. (They are usually hollow ground rather than flat ground chisel type screwdrivers). Press hard onto the screw whilst turning it. Get your full body weight onto it and they will come out no bother.

If you do this and you puncture the rear tyre, you pressed too hard!  :mfr_lol:
