Title: Safety issues
Post by: O.C. on August 17, 2020, 07:01:49 PM
Long term spinal degenerative conditions coupled with worsening hip/knee issues have been plaguing me for some months now,(I guess I could add ageing process into the equation) which means that I  have had no alternative other than to hang up my riding boots, at least for the short term anyway.

Feeling unsafe when riding really isn't any good, plus I was struggling massively to even mount and dismount my bike, so the Rev Shed is now empty of any bikes, .....they are gone !

I plan to see how I am over the Autumn and Winter seasons with a view to making a decision about maybe getting something next year, a Maxi Scooter,  may be a good decision.!,,,, time will tell

It has been a tough but necessary decision

Sorry to read this Roger. Hope things improve for you soon rather than later.

Roger, I wondered whether since our chat last week whether you might have had an impulse and subsequently purchased something else. As harsh as it sounds, and as difficult as it was I believe you have made the right decision, perhaps, hopefully in the very near future you will get something with two wheels again. In the meanwhile you will have to rely on that four legged friend of yours for entertainment and fulfilment.

It may not be long before I part company with the K1600 and get something smaller and lighter. It's four days since my last bike ride and my back is still killing me.

Keep your spirits up.

As someone with 3 discs gone in my neck and 4 in my back (unfixable according to the surgeons)  I understand how you feel. My outlook is pain management (morphine patches of increasing strength for many years now). Sad to hear you're off bikes and hope you can return to two wheels in the future.

Sad to hear this O.C.
I hope you get pain free and are able to return to a past time you enjoy even if it is only a step through lighter scooter type.
Age and health It creeps Upon all of us as you state eventually I will need something lighter to carry on enjoying bikes eventually  take care

Steve, our chat last week was helpful to me, I was able to clarify a number of thoughts that I was holding, so thank you.... and I hope that your back is soon feeling more relaxed, as a result.
As we get older our bodies remind our heads that we aren't able to do the things that we used to do. I have now got over the emotional side of not biking and am moving forward with a positive attitude.

For me the spinal Stenosis has created degeneration for many years  and there comes a time when you just have to admit certain things, especially those relating to activities such as riding motorbike, being less than sure/confident whilst riding a bike isn't a good combination

I plan to find some way to ease the situation and as Steve and I discussed last week a maxi Scooter could well be the way forward, I do need to speak to a G.P and or specialist though

In the meantime as Steve says Oscar our wonderful Cocker Spaniel will keep everyone in this household on their toes, he is a beautiful lad and a real powerhouse

Thank you all for your kind words and thoughts

Why is it that Cockers always look like they have some serious attitude, ours is exactly the same even at 15! :mfr_lol:

Please accept my sympathy too - owning and riding a bike is a big part of our lives and it must be hard to let go.

There could be ways of holding on depending on how you are incapacitated, I recall someone on the Suzuki GSX1400 forum getting his bike converted to a trike

Its a decision I don't want to have to make.  Had 2 discs out in my lower spine and a nylon stabilisation kit fitted 10 yuears ago today!.  At the time walking was in doubt, but perseverance, excercise and diet meant I was soon back on 2 wheels.  At least I outlived my surgeon, who had a head-on with a lorry on his way home from work a few years ago on his brand new FJR.

My commiserations Rog. ☹
Empty shed? What even the H2? 😭
Trikes are an option as are maxiscoots.
It all depends on what is causing the pain/discomfort.
I hope you find a way through this.

Thanks for the kind thoughts George......yes the Rev Shed is empty, I had no choice for now, it's been a tough decision but one that is necessary I'm afraid.

I have been looking into the Maxi Scooter option and they really do get good reviews and would meet my requirements,  so I'll be looking into this possibility next season , I'm in no immediate hurry just now there may be some attractive  deals next year.

It does feel strange  being 'without '

Sorry to hear that, Rog.  I hope your health changes for the better.  If things go south with me, it's a convertible in my future but the weather over here is a bit better.  Many riders with similar issues in the US go with Trikes.  Typically HD but I'm starting to see more Indians doing that.  Seeing more and more of them on the road these days.

it's an option Jim, a pal of mine has quite recently bought a Can Am Spider, he thinks its great

I need to consider my options when the 'next season arrives'

Hope you're keeping well

Sainsburys store in Carlisle is directly opposite K C Superbikes,  so after todays shop Gill and I called in to just 'take a look'  at what was on offer, the only bike that I thought might be an option was a Bonneville, mainly because it is light and low, and TBH I quite fancy one, the nearest bike  that they had in stock was a low mileage (1700) Speed Twin 2019 model year.

In short it just wasn't for me, although the bike  is well built and well finished,  but like I already said not for me.

I'll be waiting till next year now anyway,  plus we have recently moved home back to Cumbria so there are other  priorities at the moment

It was great to back amongst  some bikes again, even though  it all came to nowt.

I don't suppose anyone will be surprised to learn ythat I have been researching bike options for myself for next season.

I have a positive attitude towards possibly being able to get back on board a bike again.

Recently  I  have been walking much more, this is something I can do as we have now  moved from Northern Ireland back 'home to Cumbria  and guess what,..... as well as losing some weight I am actually feeling much more mobile and in less pain.

The specialists aren't able to do much if anything regarding my Spinal condition so it's down to me and my tablets !  I fully  intend  to ride a bike again next season , as such I've been researching possible options which need to be lighter and lower,  Triumph 850 sport, or even BMW F 900 XR TE are contenders.

There's plenty time to think it through  before next March/April, I'm feeling quite excited about the prospect now

XM-607  35 and 44 squadrons.  As far as I know it's RAF.  On static display at RAF Waddington.

If you open the attachments section, you can only use gif, jpg, and mpg type pictures.  The total size of the picture cannot be more than 4Mb.  Total size of all pictures are 20Mb.  Right click on the picture's properties and it will tell you how large it is.  I have Windows 10 and displaying a picture through Windows 10, it has options to decrease the size.  My phone is set to take high density pixel rates and I have to pare them down to insert into our forum as well.

I have used the attachments facility successfully before, I use the same camera with the same settings,  so I'm a bit baffled why I'm experiencing these problems

There's a strong possibility that it's me   :mfr_lol:

Thanks guys, the pictures were rushed as it was a particularly miserable day weather wise,

I'll take some better ones soon  and include the panniers

I'm not 100% happy with the top box and would prefer to fit the Givi box that I already owned, however the fitting kit required is a bit fiddly to install and I don't know if I want to take the job on as my fingers aren't as agile as they once were
