Title: Bike Photography
Post by: Lonewolf on July 31, 2020, 09:47:18 PM
I saw a chap on FB recently who seems to make some serious money out of taking photos of bikes at popular bike cafe's etc so I thought I'd give it a go today just for fun. Basically plot up on or near a bend, wait for bike, take photo, create a masterpiece!  :mfr_lol:

It's not as easy as it looks!

Here are some samples from today, what do you think, are they any good? Honest opinions would be appreciated.

Great photography.

A work in progress. Not as good as I'm aiming for, but okay for a first attempt.

No I took these on the Friday, how dare someone copy me the following day!  :gun_bandana:

Glad you like them, I've been back today practicing some panning shots, not at all easy.

Not bad Steve not bad ... you need a recently retired Met Officer with an ANPR camera down the road to clock their numbers  (in complete contravention of GDPR / Data Protection) ... obviously  .. and then send them an invite to your very expensive site where they buy lots of photos, you get rich and I get banged up !!!!!

Okay, not to be put off by my mediocre images from Friday, I went back on Sunday knowing it would be mega busy as it was a warm day.

Although taking pin sharp images of a fast moving vehicle, especially a small vehicle such as a bike is a skill in itself, with the right camera and good timing, anyone can do that. What I wanted to achieve is a shot that makes the bike stand out from an otherwise standard snap. Some of you may be familiar with the method of panning. Simply put, follow the trajectory of a moving object, taking photos as you do without moving the camera on the vertical axis in an effort to keep the moving object as pin sharp as possible, whilst rendering the background blurred to give a sense of speed and movement. Sounds simple I hear you say. It  :censored:  isn't!

Well I tried this technique on Sunday and my success rate was less than 10% but in my defence it is the first time I had ever tried doing this. I've edited one and I'm pleased with the result as it's what I was aiming for but now I need to practice, practice and practice to improve my technique and consistency.
