I received my Ebay Zumo 550 yesterday and I'm well chuffed with it. Second hand but it had only ever been used in a car, all the other bits and bobs were still in sealed bags with cables tied up.
My next challenge is how to power it up, the bike cabling has an in line fuse and bare stripped wires, the car cabling has a cigarette lighter connector. It had been my intention to connect the unit to the bike with the cigarette lighter socket, (fused) but as I've just discovered this is on the wrong lead. Does anyone know, can you purchase and connect up cigarette lighter sockets yourself or are they all sealed units?
If I decide to hard wire the unit in which I am happy to do, is there a simple way to do it, i.e. are there any accessible connector blocks around the front of the bike that you could use?
Any advice greatly received.
Somebody has suggested to me that I use the two little pig tails on the left front under side panel for the connection...fused to ACC, I have no idea what this means!!
Also is it easy to get this left front side panel off, assuming I knew which panel they meant? ::)
Yes, its a doddle. See my pics on removing the flies which should give you an idea. Less than 5 mins to access it.
NB, thanks for that, I will have a look. Do you know what these pigtails are that were mentioned?
Yes, its a connector under the left fairing. In fact you can probably access it by feeling for it. It's at the top of the fairing, parallel to the forks
Right that sounds like a job for Tuesday when I'm off work. I'll see if is as easy as it sounds. Many thanks.
I'll be doing my hyperlites this weekend hopefully, so I'll take a pic for you to show the exact location and colour of wires.
Right I couldnt wait so I thought I'd have a look and see how easy it was going to be.
Got the cover off

Then there is a large black plastic shroud over various electrical bits & bobs. (technical term!)
Hanging down are two wires.....

The power lead on the sat nav has an in line fuse and one black and one red cable. The fuse is wired into the red cable, not sure if that makes any difference or not?
The cables on the bike under the shroud are different colours, one is black & yellow with the gold nipple on the end as you can see in the picture and the other is a black cable with a large plastic sleeve over it. How do I wire it up from here, both sat nav cables in one of the sockets from the bike and if so which on, one cable from the sat nav lead in each hanging cable from the bike and if so which way around, I'm confused!!!!
Its pretty straight forward. Suggest you use this wiring diagram (http://www.angelridevideos.com/C14__color.pdf) as a reference for your bike. Look at the front accessory connector in the diagram.
On the GTR:
The black and yellow is negative (-)
The black is positive (+)
The red (+) on the sat nav (fuse indicates positive) connect to black (+)
The black (-) on the sat nav connect to black/yellow (-)
I suggest you go to your local electrical store and get the correct connectors to put at the end of the sat nav wiring. Sorry, I have a mental block at the moment and can't remember what they are called Make sure you get them crimped onto your sat nav leads. Once connected, wrap with black tape as a precaution (rain etc).
Bullet connectors!
I knew I knew what they were called ;D
Thanks for that, we have a local Maplins I'll go down there tomorrow.
Bear in mind bullet connectors come in different sizes. From the pic, those look like the larger size
Blast, unable to get down to Maplins because it's peeing down, job for tomorrow now.
Same as me - waiting for the rain to go away so I can put the Hyperlites on
I finally got down to Maplins and now have the bullet connectors. For future reference if anyone wants to connect anything to these spare connectors you will need a connector suitable for 0.4 to 1.0mm cable.
Hopefully I'll get the job finished tomorrow.
I assume you got the male and female connectors.
I'm actually thinking if utilising that feed, possibly to another 12v socket.
Yes I got the male and female connectors. I'm sure I will have time to complete it in the morning and then I'll be in business.
Right as promised, the job is finally finished. Got to say that NB knows his stuff and many thanks for the wiring diagram and more importantly the simple instructions of which colour wire goes where, that I understood. ;D
The Garmin mount in place on the Techmount.

Zumo 550 in position. All in all the job was simple, just a bit faffy. If I can give anyone any advice who is planning to do the same, just take your time, be aware of where you feed the power cable for the Zumo, making sure it wont get snagged on anything. It really is as simple as that.

Many thanks again, NB for the valued assistance.
Is it bluetooth? Do you have a bluetooth intercom?
I have the bluetooth bit in my Nolan N102 helmet. Its built into the side and you can use it for mobile, sat nav etc.
Nolan 102? Had that helmet with the bluetooth. Can't say I was impressed
That seriously surprises me, I've had my helmet for about three years now and always found it to be excellent.
Sorry, was referring to the Bluetooth module and speakers, not the helmet.
I'll let you off then ;D
However I've found the bluetooth bit damn good too.....
Oh dear, now I'm in for it. :)
NB,
You 'll see the system hypelites uses to piggy back on ACC leads and ground. They call it Positap, it is such a breeze to get the juice from any wires. Great stuff, I have not seen that in Europe.
Are scotch locks not the same concept? Positap looks to be slicker
Kinda, but nothing comes close to the Posi-tap system
Lonewolf, that does look very professional. I'm liking the mount and thinking that I'm going for the same setup.
If anyone else has a Zumo 550 and they intend to put some music on it, it aint as straight forward as you might of hoped.
I have i-tunes as my default player on the PC and as I have discovered this evening i-tunes is not compatible with the Zumo. Therefore what you need to do is use Windows Media Player and alter the format to MP3 by going into the menu (RIP) and then selecting (MORE OPTIONS). From there change the format to MP3 and select best quality. This will use about 144mb per CD.
Then import, (rip) your tracks off the CD and create a Playlist from within Windows Media Player and give it a name which you can associate easily with the Zumo. Then connect your Zumo to your PC and sync the two together. Your MP3 music tracks will then be transferred to your Zumo. I purchased a seperate SD card for the Zumo, (8gb) and copied the music tracks straight to that. That way there is no risk of accidental deletion of any important files on the actual Zumo itself.
Pop your SD card back into the Zumo unless you have copied the files over with the SD card already in the Zumo, its as broad as it is long. And then you are in business. Simple!!
Was looking voor pic and more detail on the front aux power... Here it was...
Is it possible to connect a fuzeblock on this aux (how?)
Thx guys!
