Title: F1 Warning and error
Post by: knightraider on March 21, 2020, 03:38:59 PM
I have just put my battery back in after the winter storage and when trying to start her up, i received the F1 error and F! on the instrument panel.

How do i rectify this as the handbook says it is something to do with the digital fuel system.

There is a bit of petrol left in to start up.

Any advice would be helpful to avoid taking it in to the dealers.

Thanks

Glen

Fill her up and ride it, the message, which is not uncommon, will fairly quickly disappear

Alternatively your engine will go bang.

I had it on mine a couple of times and it always disappeared pretty quickly without any consequences. However going back a few years I was out with Charlie and after we had had a break, we set off and his display was showing F1 and it didn't clear for ages and when it did eventually clear it was possibly because he had done the fail safe method of turning the bike off and then back on again.

I think it's just something that happens occasionally, sometimes for no apparent reason. Be aware of it and what it means, but don't dwell on it unless its happening very frequently.

Thanks for the advice ,but i forgot to mention that it won't start the engine just turns over.

I will try and open my fuel tank, just in case there is an air lock.

Thanks

Ah, you didn't say it wouldn't start. Are you able to jump start it?
Title: Re: F1 Warning and error
Post by: O.C. on March 22, 2020, 07:31:24 AM
Yes that's a fairly significant omission that you made, try some jump leads and or check that the battery connections are secure, add some fuel, there may not be enough in there

Just for info for others, its FI as in Fuel Injection, not F1 as in Formula One

Hi All

Thanks for all your replies.

I have tried to jump start it, but no joy.

I have tried opening my petrol cap to see if it is an airlock, still no joy.

All my lights are bright.

It just keeps on trying to start with plenty of turnover.

My petrol gauge is up on 1 bar and not flashing low fuel.

The battery is the original one and will be at least 8 years old, could it be that.

All the terminals are on securely. 1 lead to the positive and 2 to the negative. As i took it off and reconnected a couple of times. But still no joy.

Petrol in the tank will be about 6 months old so should be okay. When fitted last year (April 2019) the same applied and started up first time.

I don't know what else to do?

Hope somebody else does.

Thanks

Glen

You say it keeps trying to start with good turnover so your battery sounds healthy. What you haven't confirmed is whether you've checked is the kill switch.

A further thought is do you have any cover, home start etc with the likes of the RAC or AA?

Won't turn over with the kill switch on

If it turns over then you have eliminated all the electrical overrides such as faulty side stand switch, false neutral, faulty engine kill switch. If it were any of these or others not thought of then the bike would not turn over.
Do try with a new fully charged battery or jump start from a running car(very difficult to get jump leads attached)

Good luck

Hi Glenn, can you check to see if you have a feed to your fuel pump?

About the fuel pump priming, i don't know what i am listening for?

The battery has run down due to trying to start it. I have put it back on charge and getting the battery checked at a garage.

I don't know if it was turning over as i think it was just the starter motor whiring round.

You should hear the engine actually turning over, like Daisy says put your flat palm over the end of the exhaust whilst pressing the start button, if the engine is turning over you will feel the pressure coming out of the exhaust onto your palm.

I still think that your battery may be knackered which would not be unusual after a winter lay off

Hi All

I have had my battery checked at a garage and is fine.

Just in case i am not wiring it up properly.

There is only 1 positive lead to attach to the positive and 2 leads attached to the negative.

I usually put all cables back into their positions with the screw  loosely fitted, so that i don't forget and  I can't see any other wires dangling that should be connected.

Could it be the spark plugs as i had them fitted 2 years ago and if so it is a difficult job getting to them, so i am led to believe. When talking to Autorama they said that the plugs should be fine when booking in for a service, before all this started.

The plugs on a GTR are designed to last for huge miles, I doubt that will be the cause.

Hi All

Thank you for your help and patience in this.

I have reconnected the battery as the garage said it was fine and still no joy.

From your advice, i have compression out of my exhaust, all electrics work including the screen raiser, tried putting it in gear and starting the bike just tries moving forward a little. Tried swishing the petrol round and leaving the fuel cap open. So that tells me the battery is connected properly.

Could it be a fuse? if so which one do i look at? as i can only think of this last option.

When talking to Brian at Autorama before they closed down due to the coronovirus he said he didn't know after talking to the mechanic.

It has got be something simple as you can guess i am at my wits end in trying to solve it with all your help and advice.

So please any more ideas.

If anybody lives in the Halifax, West Yorkshire area maybe you can come and have a look.

Thanks

Glen

Hi Glenn, its definitely turning over then and the battery is fine.
Could you hear a noise from the fuel pump when you first turn on the ignition?

What about the can position sensor?  Think these can cause this fault
Title: Re: F1 Warning and error
Post by: shaggs147 on March 25, 2020, 11:18:16 PM
If it were my bike I'd be tempted to spray a little brake cleaner in the air intake as you crank the engine. If it tries to fire up I'd then look at fuel issues. You need to try and work out if you can hear the fuel pump when you turn on the ignition. When you turn the ignition on, can you remember if the noises from the bike sound different to when the bike was working?  I had a problem many years ago where the wiring to the pump and display went faulty, preventing the bike from starting.
I'm only guessing here, but if the bike doesn't try to start on brake cleaner, then it could well be a sensor as mentioned in the previous post, or an electrical problem of some description, where diagnostic software will be required.

Yes i can hear the fuel pump priming, and when turning on the ignition everything sounds normal.

Where is the air intake to try the brake cleaner?

Could it be bad fuel? Not sure if that is a thing, or a blocked fuel filter.

Or perhaps admit defeat and when circumstances permit, get the bike booked into Autorama for a proper diagnostic check.

Trouble is, its been cranked over so many times, I bet the cylinders are flooded with fuel, old fuel at that.  I hate to say it, but it does look like tank off and some decent Easy Start sprayed into the manifold.  Pulling the plugs is a whole new ball game

Hasn't got an alarm imobiliser on it has it. I see in an earlier post you interupted the power supply. Can be a big issue if alarm wasn't put in safe mode first.

Could be simply no spark, I don't expect there is an easy way to check either what with the plugs being where they are.

Hi All

Thanks for all your help.

No i can't smell petrol.

I had it booked it for a 20,000 mile service but Autorama cancelled due to whats going on.

I contacted the breakdown service and i was covered for a home visit and the RAC didn't have a motorcycle diagnostic machine with them to plug in. As my MOT is due on the 2nd April and will be taxed i am covered for transport to Autorama when they reopen.

Where is the diagnostic plug on the bike? as i thought it was under the seat by the tool kit area but couldn't find it.

I am going to ask a local garage which have a motorcycle diagnostic machine to see if they will come out to plug in the diagnostic machine to see if it will pick up the fault.  Once i know where the plug in is.

Thanks

Glen

Hi Glen i think it is under the seat but i don't think its an obd2 plug like the cars use. Can you spray some brake cleaner or easy start where Daisy suggested and crank the bike over? Worth a try mate.

Hi All

I am going to another local garage on Monday and ask if he has a diagnostic machine and if he will be prepared to come out and try it.

If not, i will have to wait until Autorama re-opens when it is safe to do so and get the RAC to transport it over.

Thanks

i have just got  a zz1400 on 07 33000m not long after it did not want to start but did turn over fine ,gave the crankshaft sensor a clean and has been fine since , easyish to get to just in the middle of the engine at the top near the front worth a clean and spray with wd40 ,had this part go on two cars where they would not start , anything is worth  a try  ,

Hi All

At last i have had my bike relayed to Autorama and it didn't take them long to find the problem of not starting with the F1 error. It turned out to be a cam shaft sensor. They promptly ordered 1 whilst it was being serviced and upon fitting, hey presto it fired up straight away.

Thanks for all your advice in trying to sort it out, but you can put this in your repertoire  for future reference.

Glen

Hi All

Upon rereading all your advice, the last post mentioned the crank shaft sensor, who said it was easy to get to, but Brian at Autorama said it was difficult as it took them 2.5 hours to do, as they had to take of the side fairings drop the radiator forward then replaced the sensor. As i don't habe all the appropriate tools and a decent garage and not mechanically minded to start taking things to pieces. For me it was easier for Autorama to do, even if it was more money, but for peace of mind in being done properly it was worth it.
