Title: ABS pump for 2009
Post by: Brizzlerob on November 08, 2019, 04:40:12 PM
Can anyone advise where I might be able to get a second hand ABS pump? I was out for a ride Sunday and ended up causing a lot of damage when the rear brake seized on. My mechanic has nailed it down to the pump (he has connected direct from the master to the caliper and the brakes work ok but still lock when going through the ABS pump). A new pump when in stock is £1300   so as you can imagine I am looking for a second hand pump.

I got mine off eBay, cost £175 in 2017
try breakers,
check if ZZR pump is the same spec as there are more of them at breakers

Yup, couple on eBay from The States
part number you need is 16082-0041
the ZZR pump looks similar, but a different number (16082-0031)

That failure sounds a little worrying. Did it just lock on as you were riding?

ABS Pump failures are very common these days on bikes and cars and are usually caused by not changing the brake fluid Bi-annually. Brake fluid attracts water and this water finds its way to the ABS pump causing expensive failure of the pump unit.
I personally replace brake fluid annually to prevent these issues and for little cost it's worth doing.

It's been an irregular occurrence on the earlier (series 1) bikes over the last 5-6 years. It happened to mine.  Kaw gave me a new one as they wanted the faulty one to investigate.  The cause has been put down to not changing the fluid every 2 years as per service schedule.  The ZZR1400/ZX14 unit will do the same job.  It is calibrated just very slightly differently due to the slightly lighter weight - hence the different p/number, but only those prior to 2012 without Traction Control.

Due to the low number of failures worldwide, Kaw said they will do nothing about it.

Whilst out for a ride the bike felt a bit sluggish; I thought that it was maybe a bit of an air blockage. Due to the back brake being rather poor, the engine was able to over come the limited braking ability of the back brake. At the point of failure of the brake I thought that the "air blockage" had cleared and all was ok until I depressed the rear brake pedal and found all resistance had gone. I was able to proceed using the front brake.

I believe the 16082-0041 is for the Gen 2. I have ordered the 16082-0023 for the Gen 1. Interesting to note that the ZZR pump might do the job. As I have already ordered the part from Germany I will see how that goes and report back later.

Helpful advice - I will be changing my brake fluids more regularly from now on

Not only should you change the brake fluid every 2 years, you should also actuate the ABS on both front and rear every so often.
