Title: Health & Safety gone mad!
Post by: Lonewolf on October 27, 2019, 12:07:27 AM
Called into a Costa the other day at Southwaite Services on the M6. Ordered a large hot choccy with cream and told them I wanted to drink it inside rather than take it away.
Ordinarily it would have come in a large mug but they reckoned they didn't have any washed so asked would I be okay having it in a takeaway cup. No problems I told them.
So they poured it and then went to put a lid on the cup, no point I told them, I'm only going to sit there less than ten foot away and take the lid off to drink it.
They refused to give me the drink unless I agreed to them putting a lid on it citing health and safety, I conceded, they stuck the lid on the cup, I walked three paces, sat down, took the lid off and drank it without injuring myself or anyone else.

The world has gone  :censored:  mad and especially at a time when we are all encouraged to reduce our waste.

The blanket one size fits all fix to a problem.
Probably in one store at one time, there has been a problem and the reaction is what you encountered.
Similarly I quite often get a 'double cupped' tea or coffee, I suspect because they have run out of those corrugated sleeve things and cannot possibly use a single cup and tell people to be careful or even use a tray.

It just surprised me that in an age when we are all trying to, and encouraged to reduce our use of single use plastic waste, here is Costa insisting I put a lid on it....literally!  :mfr_lol:

I regularly tell members of the public to put a lid on it  :whistling:

I expect there will be health and safety warnings on motor bikes before long.

You reckless man!

Provided that you had written a method statement and conducted a risk assessment they should have let you take it once that you could demonstatrte that you had identifed all possible hazards. It's always worth asking if you can check thier asbestos register as well - you should not really be encountering any but should you accidentally disturb something on the way to your table all hell will break loose, you have no idea the paperwork it generates. A banksman of course should be employed to make sure that your route is clear of the public. Wearing a Hi-Viz will make people more aware of your presence and the danger you are creating. Also consider waering suitable heat resistant gloves. The golden rule is to elinate that hazard entirely if at all possible - had you considered just taking the cup without any dangerous liquid? Finally consider asking the staff to briefly close the store whilst you carry out the operation.

As someone in the cosnstruction industry I have to dael with this sort of thing all the time. Twenty years ago I spent half of my time quoting for work and the other half delivering projects I had won. Now it's about one third each between those and halth & safety paperwork. And they wonder why productivity is down......
