MAY TRIP CANCELLED DUE TO COVID 19
NEW DATES ARE THURSDAY 16TH JULY TO MONDAY 20TH JULY INCLUSIVE.
VENUE NOW CHANGED TO......https://tyndrumlodges.co.uk
The official venue is https://www.muthuhotels.com/ben-doran-hotel/en/index.html (https://www.muthuhotels.com/ben-doran-hotel/en/index.html) Tyndrum, approximately 30 miles South of Glencoe.
However as and when that hotel gets booked up and it will as it is a very popular venue there is other accommodation close by, i.e. http://thetyndruminn.co.uk (http://thetyndruminn.co.uk) and many other places. If you are seriously interested however I would book at the earliest opportunity as many of the lodgings in Scotland rapidly get booked up well in advance.
The itinerary is simple on these meets as there isn't one really! You can basically do what you choose, go off and explore on your own if that's what you prefer, or alternatively have a ride out as a group. For anyone who has never visited Scotland, (shame on you), :mfr_lol: then this is a perfect opportunity to have a wee introduction to the beauty which it offers in abundance. :biker3:
This will be fun ... as Steve says a good chance just to meet up, chat, go out and ride if you fancy, go far or stay near .. you don't even have to stay overnight, just pop up and say hello
Mr Google maps tells me from the sunny Worthing on the souffff coast its just over 1000 miles there and back .. without the daily rides
So come on .. get it in the diary now and see some of that beautiful Scottish scenery.
I'd like to join this Steve and, at the moment, my wife is also a likely candidate (although she needs to decide whether 421miles each way is manageable for her).
We do have to consider a visit from her old school friend though, who is coming over from Japan during April or May, and so will need to establish which month it is to be. Meanwhile, I'll book the hotel for us both and if necessary, cancel later.
We will travel up on Thursday and leave on Tuesday, to avoid the Bank Holiday traffic as far as is possible!
Colin that's great, looking forward to seeing you again. Would it be feasible for your wife to fly into Glasgow Airport and you pick her up from there to minimise any discomfort from a long bike ride?
That is a thought Steve, although it would need to be Edinburgh from here, Glasgow would mean a trip to Stansted or Luton, some 70 miles in the wrong direction.
I think that my wife will probably decide to make the trip (she did survive a journey of 350 miles or more when we went to Scotland this year, and had not been any real distance before that) although I might need to factor in an overnight in at least one direction.
I will (subject to your agreement) ask my Brother if he wants to come, he now lives in Dornoch and travelled down for this year's trip? He does though have a Triumph Twin at the moment, although I understand that it is up for change soon!
That sounds brilliant 700 miles round trip 👍
I will be pushing for these holiday dates for next year I will confirm ASAP.

If you even have a slight desire to go I would be booking your accommodation now. They offer two price structures, one includes no cancellation fee up to 48hrs before arrival. This area is the gateway to the Scottish Highlands and accommodation in most places in Scotland rapidly gets snapped up these days.
 just booked for those dates.. "the wolf" is correct.. dose not matter what your steed is.. ie.. gtr/bmw/ktm/suzuki. or POGO STICK .. just a few ride outs/beer/food and some bollocks talk.. I will be on my all time favorite steed the 2019 zzr1400 performance sport

Oh well, thwarted again :( A trip to Scotland never seems to drop right for me.
15-31/05 has been set aside for my Euorpen excursion next year.
Enjoy the meet and the roads guys - we can swap photos in June.
Pete.
Alas Steve we will be in preparation mode for our European trip in June. Please pass our best regards on to all who attend and we look forward to catching up with friends old and new soon.

I've done it from both directions. The road was okay, narrow and twisty yes, I wouldn't argue with you there, but if you've done Hardknottt Pass in The Lakes, you're pretty prepared for anything. :mfr_lol:
Did you do Apllecross Pass?
I know its a way off but in these dark winter days its nice to have something to look forward to !! I am sure the time will fly by !
This sounds right up my street. My wife and I love it up there. We will probably stay in Crianlarich, 7 miles from Tyndrum and then meet up each morning. We know a nice place, which I'll tell you about when we book (hehe).
Mick.
That's us booked at the Ben More Lodge.
http://www.ben-more.co.uk/accommodation
We've used this place before, it's great for bikers. The lodges are basic but comfortable, decent showers and good TV reception. The restaurant is excellent with good value meals and breakfast is included.
I've booked online with no cancellation fee, not that we will cancel !
Mick.
Mick, excellent, looking forward to meeting up.
Nicely done Mick .... this is going to be a good meet up and if the weather holds it will be even better
I have some Garmin routes of about 200 miles starting from Crianlarich (or Tyndrum) if anyone wants to follow me on the day?
Where could I post them to on this forum ?
Mick.
I would imagine this very thread would be a good place .... get us all salivating and excited in December ! ... if I am wrong I am sure an I.T guru will move it tweek it re name it and tell me off for interfering !!! ............... :whistling: :whistling: :whistling: :whistling:
TBH guys/ladies I would have considered a trip over the seas to join in the fun... But May is completely out of the question for me as it is the absolute busiest month for bike shows and races etc which I am unavoidably fully committed to :biker3:
I know you will have a blast
The "Oban Loop" is an option/alternative for anyone who would like a ferry trip.
The first stop at Arduaine and last at the Whistlefield Inn are the same whether the ferry is used or not.
Crianlarich to Tarbert Ferry 1 h, 54 min 91 P&T stop at Arduaine
After 10:15, the ferry departs every hour, check-in closes 10 min prior to departure. Single fare for a motorcycle was £4.35. Not sure if this has risen since last year. Arduaine to Tarbert Ferry is 39 min, getting the 13:15 ferry would be good, leaving Arduaine around midday. The ferry is non-bookable in advance, just turn up and pay at the port office. Crossing is 25 min.
Portavadie Ferry to Crianlarich 1 h, 54 min 92 ETA at Whistlefield Inn P&T stop 14:30
TOTAL 3 h, 48 min 183 ETA at Crianlarich 16:30
Unfortunately the forum does not allow (.gpx) files to be uploaded. I can send it on email closer to the date.

I quite fancy a trip to Oban and then hopping on the ferry to the Isle of Mull. I think most people have done Skye to death and the last time I did Skye it was a bloody nightmare with the volume of traffic and huge RV's at every turn and in some cases queuing three deep at the passing places on the single track roads. Don't even get me going about some of the foreign tourists who didn't want to drive on the left!!!!! :mfr_lol:

Well, I'm still booked at Tyndrum Lodge, around 150 yards away to avoid any rowdiness!
I say me, because my wife has now decided to stay in Edinburgh whilst I attend the meeting.
Our daughter is flying up to join her so that they can shop, so I've arranged the rental of an apartment for them in the centre. We're then going to our usual haunt at Ashkirk for a few days afterward, before returning home.
Colin that sounds like a win, win situation. Your wife and daughter get to spend your money even when they're not present and you get to spend quality time with a load of strange blokes in the middle of nowhere! What could possibly go wrong. :mfr_lol:
Steve, I don't think that they will go too mad, as my daughter will have only hand baggage allowance and we are on the bike!
Whatever they do though, it's difficult to argue when, as my wife says, she has accommodated a lifetime of aviation and motorbikes, so I don't even try any longer.
I would still much rather spend the weekend with you all at Tyndrum than shop with them in Edinburgh however!

Yes, I can relate to that. I detest shopping with the Mrs, she makes such hard work of it!
It all seems so pointless, adding more clothes/handbags/shoes to the huge quantity already lurking in wardrobes here. Two years ago, my wife ordered yet another winter coat at serious expense. To date, it hasn't left its coat hanger and plastic cover, as she prefers the one that she was wearing before ordering it!
I find shopping very stressful, as I don't like crowds anyway unless I am at work and speaking to a paying audience!
It's one of the downsides of (mostly) stopping work (Steve beware!). Before, I was always too busy to be included in these expeditions.
Mick (GLA55Y) has invited me to join you on this trip. I'm booked up at the Ben Doran Hotel. I'll be riding a BMW R1200RT.

Thank you for the welcome Steve.
I do use an RT Forum, for the last four years, have arranged an annual RT meet, got one planned for 2020.
Sounds good, whereabouts does the RT annual tour take you?
Quote from: Lonewolf on December 19, 2019, 04:52:34 PMWhereabouts does the RT annual tour take you?
2016 - Haltwhistle, 2017 - Tewkesbury, 2018 - Leicester, 2019 - Shrewsbury & 2020 - Peterborough.
Based on those who usually attend, the idea is to meet somewhere geographically fairly central. I'm the furthest North in Teesside and there is someone from Portsmouth. We have a two night stay, with a day ride out on the middle day, usually a Saturday.

Does anyone have any requests for the trip, i.e. an organised tour of a distillery, going on a boat cruise on Loch Lomond, visiting the Isle of Mull for the day from Oban, having a tour of a haunted castle, saying Hi to the Loch Ness monster and visiting the Nessie museum etc. If so, just drop some ideas below and we'll see what we can incorporate into the trip.

Steve, as a Newbie & non-GTR owner, I don't wish to interfere too much. If I am, please "politely" let me know.
However, with the help of "The Motorcyclist's Guide To Scotland" by J.G. Fergusson, using Garmin BaseCamp, have created some possible routes for ride outs.
If these are of interest to anyone, they can be shared.
I would love to do some ot the trips you have mentioned 👍.
But alas to early to say . The works are being :censored: :censored: and claim not to have received my holiday requests when I checked. They now claim the dates are full :censored: so I will be hoping another driver will swop with me :censored: in the new year or another option is I quite 🤔
David that's much appreciated thanks. If you want to PM me any suggestions for routes that would be great. Our meets are very informal and it's not uncommon for us just to do our own thing. However as Scotland is a new destination for our meet next year it makes sense to make an effort and schedule some points of interest without committing to huge miles as we want to chill out too.
We'll see if others suggest anything and then try to include a little of everything to keep the troops happy.
Quote from: Lonewolf on December 29, 2019, 12:06:55 PMIf you want to PM me any suggestions for routes that would be great.

If you would like to PM me an email address, the routes can be shared, thank you.
Unfortunately I'll be touring Spain and Portugal at the time. Enjoy the horizontal rain!
This is all coming together rather nicely ... all we have to do is book the weather !
UPDATE ON BIKE MEET
Okay, so in order to add some structure to this meet which is being held in pastures new it made sense to plan some routes for a group ride should anyone wish to partake. Currently for those who may like to accompany Nigel & I, we are going to visit the Isle of Mull on Friday 22nd May returning obviously the same day.
We will be departing on the outward ferry from Oban at 09:50 which docks at Craignure Ferry Terminal on Mull at 10:40. The return journey departs Mull at 17:05 and arrives in Oban at 17:55. Check in closes 30 minutes prior to each departure time. Purchasing tickets in advance would be advisable to avoid disappointment as this could be a busy weekend being a Bank Holiday. There are multiple crossings each day so if these times do not suit you, simply amend your departure times to suit yourself. Return ticket prices are £21 approximately for bike and rider.
Tickets can be purchased here..... www.calmac.co.uk/article/2974/Mull-Oban---Craignure (http://www.calmac.co.uk/article/2974/Mull-Oban---Craignure)
The plan is to then ride North from the ferry terminal into Tobermory where we can have a stroll, possibly buy some souvenirs and for those that wish to do so, spend some quality time in the Tobermory Distillery Visitors Centre https://tobermorydistillery.com (https://tobermorydistillery.com)
Whilst in Tobermory we can sample the delights of locally sourced food, possibly at the Cafe Fish or somewhere similar. www.thecafefish.com/menus/menus/ (http://www.thecafefish.com/menus/menus/)
The very loose plan then is to simply explore as much of the Island as we can in a comfortable and safe manner, allowing time for photo stops, leg stretches and comfort breaks etc before heading back to the ferry terminal after what I am sure will be a thoroughly enjoyable day.
Once back at Oban it should take approximately an hour to get back to Tyndrum where we can then enjoy the rest of the evening in the village having a well earned drink.
If anyone fancies this can they comment on the thread just to give an indication of any interest. Many thanks, Steve.

I'll happily make the booking for you if you forward me your registration number and of course a few shillings to cover the ferry crossing fees, otherwise the responsibility is on each attendee to make their own bookings. As for a block booking, I don't think they'd be interested in that as it's only a 40 something minute crossing and it wouldn't be worth either their hassle or ours to try and negotiate something.
"exploring in a comfortable and safe manner" .... I love it Steve ! Does that mean no DPG style riding ? I shall have to make some space for the distillery visit

:mfr_lol: What I meant was by all means we can have fun and tonk along where possible but not to the detriment of missing something awesome which we might otherwise regret. P.S. If we're considering DPG style riding does that mean we need to request a Wall's Ice Cream van somewhere on route? :whistling:
You will probably find one at the bottom of the sea covered in " Ive met The Met" stickers ... sorry everyone ... we digress off topic !
Okay, so far there are three of us paid up for the Oban to Mull ferry trip.....anyone else fancy this? If not, no dramas as I understand some people may simply want to do their own thing.
If it's of any interest to anyone.
Mull is also accessible by ferry from Ardnamurchan, Kilchonan to Tobermory and across the Sound of Mull at Lochaline to Fishnish, have used all three crossings in the past.

Hi guys.. well from June 2019 to date is a time I would rather forget.. as in the June my mum fell and with her being 82 years old it caused serious complications as she was in hospital for 3 weeks then in a rest home.. she is at home at moment with limited movement.. but as most mothers of that age she is very demanding and dam right unreasonable and will not except carers as she is old fashioned and seems to think it's our responsibility to care for her.. to make matters worse my dad died in the August at the ripe old of age 88 as this come as a big shock as he never showed any illness but just passed away. I've book the stay at the hotel for the duration of the jolly boys trip but can't say for defo if I will be attending as it's not fair to leave my "significant other half" OTHER WISE KNOWN AS THE WIFE!! to deal with our present situation.. for this reason I've decided not to book the ferry day trip but if I do managed to make the trip I will of course try to get a sailing on the day if not I will just potter around Glencoe and be a loan wolf lol... However hopefully things may get better if they do I will attending the meet and most likely arrange to meet the "wolf" at some point.. possible at Lancaster services for the ride up north.. if all ok will be looking forward to the meet as not had a decent ride out except for odd back and forwards to work when the weather permitting and as the weather been crap lately that's only been a few times!
P.S sorry about the moan.. but just wanted to update the situation as most likely met a few of the guys that are attending the trip when we met at the lower lode meet many years ago.
Regards dave
I hope things get better for you soon.

If the Oban to Craignure ferry is not available, Calmac offer two alternative "Turn Up and Go!" routes to Mull.
Mull: Lochaline - Fishnish, https://www.calmac.co.uk/lochaline-fishnish-mull-ferry-summer-timetable
Ardnamurchan and Mull: Tobermory - Kilchoan, https://www.calmac.co.uk/tobermory-kilchoan-ardnamurchan-mull-ferry-summer-timetable
Have used all three crossings in the past.
Dave, I fully understand where you are coming from. My Dad died very suddenly and unexpectedly one month ago tomorrow. My Dad was also 82, the same age as your Mum. He fell at home, he was admitted into hospital and we were told straight away he only had 24 to 48 hours. How do you prepare yourself for that? Thirty something hours later he passed away.
The last few weeks have been very testing and emotionally draining. My Sister lives overseas so obviously every responsibility lay with me, however in a reassuring way it has been good to have that sole responsibility of giving the old man a good send off which I did. It doesn't make it any easier though.
Most people know I love my dogs, they have provided me with immense comfort and support, it's amazing how something so simple as a dog, can assist with the grieving process. One of my dogs, a Springer is on his last legs, he probably only has a few weeks left before we have to make that difficult decision, but when the time is right, we will let him go.
Its going to be difficult to process these two events and then go on a bike trip in May as if nothing has happened, but if I don't I am likely to go mad. I need some me time, I need to meet up with some old and new friends and I need to enjoy the hospitality which Scotland offers.
So roll on May and the Scottish trip, which I am looking forward to, Dave if we can, we will have a catch up weather and work permitting before the trip.
Steve.. Sorry to hear your dad passed away I certainly know the feeling of that kind of emptiness.. as my dad was the type of man that put others first.. so laid back nothing was to much trouble and always insisted of slipping me the odd tenner here and there even thou I didn't need it. suppose he remembered my younger years when I first got married and money was tight.. he used to say well I don't need it you do! he is sadly missed. I've also inherited his dog called buster he is a cross breed and we don't know what type of cross he is as my dad found him when he was a puppy on his travels 15 years ago. he is deaf/ partly blind and limps and a few years ago got attacked by other dog and ended up in the vets with various chunks missing and deep cuts over most of his body needing stitchers then last year my dad noticed he had a lump the size of a tennis ball on his side and took him back to the vets but the vet said it is cyst and benign and due to his age said best to leave alone as it did not appear to give him any trouble.. but with my sense of humour!! I then suggested to my dad to rename him "LUCKY" lol..... which he frowned at first then when it sank in.. he burst out laughing. myself and my wife as always had a dog but mainly for my 2 daughters when they were young and when our last dog which was a cocker spaniel passed away age 14 years we never felt like getting another dog as my daughters had got married and moved out.. my both daughters have cocker spaniels now which are spoiled like babies they are both dog lovers in a big way. Anyway.. back on topic now I do plan if possible and going on the Scotland trip and agree live is for living and not dwelling over sad events, I may not book the ferry trip but if I do managed the trip I will try and book ferry on the day also as soon as the weather picks up we will arranged a ride out and before you say it.. it dose not need to be the PONDEROSA.. lol.. but you would do well to talk me out of it lol..... bye for now.
I know we're going off track here a bit with the GTR meet and I apologise to anyone who should be new to this forum and who may stumble across this thread and think WTF are they talking about this for. I just want to say good on you for taking on Buster, many others which I have witnessed personally through the job, upon discovering that a family member who owned a pet has passed away have taken the heartless approach and simply had the pet PTS, regardless of its age. I have had to inwardly question people's principles many times in years past but also keep my opinions to myself for fear of apparently 'upsetting' grieving family members.
As for the Ponderosa I heard it was closing down and the site was going to open as a new BMW dealer. :whistling:

Sorry to hear of the sad events that you have recently experienced Dave, I know exactly what its like having lost my dad in 1997 and my mom in 2003, it's never an easy time
Stay strong and hold on to your memories
As I stated in a previous posting, May is the busiest month on my calendar, Gill myself and Oscar the Cocker are on holiday for the first week and then the N.W 200 race week takes place at which we (our N.I bike club) put on a display, then in the third week I will be at the N.W Kawasaki Triples club rally weekend in Fleetwood, so as you can see I'm totally booked up for the whole month

You would be welcome to pop in to the Fleetwood rally (Fleetwood Rugby Club) however it is on the same weekend as the GTR meeting !
Geoff now has a V 650 .... I do Still have the V1000
Just pitch in if I may by just saying how sorry I am to hear of this sadness and losses of both Steve and Dave. It is always a sad time and perhaps as we ourselves get older we can appreciate our own lives a little more. Thats all. Back to the topic in question ....... Roll on the 2020 meet up !

That's appreciated, thanks.
Just an update for the attendees thus far.....
I have spoken last night with the management of the chain of hotels Mutha Ben Doran who have confirmed that as far as our hotel is concerned, ITS CURRENTLY BUSINESS AS USUAL.
However I'll keep an eye on matters and fingers crossed nothing will change.
I heard that Scotland hasn't yet instructed pubs clubs and meeting places to close down, if this is so, then I'm somewhat amazed given the current circumstances
Roger, I cannot provide an explanation for that either. However as the vast percentage of visitors to Scotland are travellers from Europe and beyond, often the US and the Asian continent it is possible that because traffic has been restricted from those countries some time ago and the fact that Scotland's population is quite widely situated, especially in The Highlands this has assisted the Scottish authorities at this time in not following suit with the rest of the country.
I read a few days ago that Russia, with a population of approximately 146 million people has had less cases of Coronavirus than Luxembourg which has a population of less than one million. The reason provided was due to measures which Putin implemented in January to restrict contact between its inhabitants with others. Apply this principle to the Scotland scenario and lack of tourists over the last couple of months and that could be a reason.
Alternatively it could simply be that Scotland has forgotten to send out the memo.... :mfr_lol:
In the news last night they were saying Police in Scotland visiting pubs to close them.
I can imagine how smoothly that went in places like Glasgow! :gunsmilie:
Population density here in Northern Ireland is also quite 'sparse' and yet pubs bars clubs etc are closed
Unfortunately it looks like this meet up/holiday isn't going to happen. We will give it until the week before to look at cancelling the Hotel booking.
If anything changes for the better before then, happy days.
Mick and Jue.
I'm trying to remain optimistic about the trip, hopefully it will still happen and let's face it it will be a welcome diversion from where we are today if it comes off.
We have almost two full months yet so keep everything crossed. :biker3:

The glass is still half full, but being realistic, it's not looking good.
Let's hope it all blows over within two full months.
Sorry in inform everyone that I will be unable to make the meet on Thursday 21st to Monday 25th may 2020 and have cancelled my booking via booking.com.. just as well I book with free cancellation.. As I'm on 2 immune suppressing drugs I've been advised by the rheumatoid arthritis team at my hospital and will be receiving a letter advising me to self isolate for 12 weeks as I'm at risk 3 of contacting the sodden coronavirus virus. with everything eles that as happened since June 2019 I don't mind saying the last 10 months as been SHIT!!!
P.S lets hope we see a end to this virus fast and safely as soon as possible and everyone complies with the guide lines set out by the Government. can't believe what I'm still seeing that some people are still not taking this virus seriously enough.. hopefully later in the year we can organise another meet... as I will be very surprised if all hotels and bars are not closed down completely very soon for at least 12 weeks.
What a shame. I hope you do not have too difficult a time. You could do with a change in fortunes.

cheers for that! but we all go through sad times at some point when we loose loved one's that's just life.. I'm fine in myself just got to keep my head down until this virus is under control.. I'm one of the luckiest one's as I'm only slightly more likely to be infected than someone not on immune suppressors. As it is highly unlikely that this virus will be over within the next few months I think it's only fair to the hotel when considering it's unlikely I will be in a position to go is to cancel the booking so if things do change the hotel can re-book the room. also my decision to cancel was made when I reviewed the Scotland outbreak and seen this..
'40-50,000 people' in Scotland may be infected
Scotland's chief medical officer Catherine Calderwood said around 40-50,000 people in the country may be infected with coronavirus.
"Many of them do not yet know that they are infected," she said.
"Nor indeed do they realise that they are going to potentially infect those around them.
"It has been very encouraging see the empty streets and shops and transport around Scotland. This is going to be a long haul and I encourage people as the weekend comes... to not relax those roles, to not be tempted to see other families from other households.
She urged people to stay in their households as "not mixing with other people who are then mixing with others is so key and so important".

The government made an announcement today about lockdown and travel it's now at least early May so the meet is not looking good at the moment which would be a shame 🏍😢
We don't go until the end of May so keep everything crossed. :biker3:
We don't know for sure when lockdown is to be exstended to yes but I think it will run up till end of May. But I hope I'm wrong and it is less.
A 3 week extension takes us to May 08th .... unless I wake up on the day of my departure and we are still in lockdown I shall be heading north....
As this meet was a 350 trip for me 👍 .
I planned to stay in the Lake District on my way up for the night in a B&B.
Alas they have just messaged me to inform as due to the covid-19 and government guidelines they will be closing for the foreseeable future. It's not looking good for the Scotland meet
Have faith, it's not over till it's over.
We are still hoping this goes ahead. It would be a great escape from the lockdown.
Fingers crossed for you guys.

Rusty has booked into a Premiere Inn just outside Keighley. Give them a call and see if you can get in there. I'm meeting Rusty there Thursday morning and then we can all ride up together provided you don't mind slumming it with a couple of BMW riders. :mfr_lol:

You are right GLA55Y ... what an escape that would be ... just delightful !
I had an E mail from Premier Inn in early March when this all kicked off ... simply stating they were offering free cancelations and or re books if you were staying with them between 19th March and 31st May .... all very understanding of the situation, which of course they have to be.
It is a waiting game for us all ... just fingers crossed there will be a relaxation of the lockdown by then .... if the Brewers Fayre next door to the PI is closed I can get some grub from a near by garage ... or wait outside Steves front door ... 2 metres away obviously, and wait for him to chuck his left overs out !
Chins up everyone .. the sun is shining and summer is on its way

An update on our hotel availability.
The below email implies the hotel will be re-opening in May (at some point) however I will check in with them again in a week or so. However please note the hotels cancellation process has been amended in our favour so if you are sitting on the fence re cancelling you now know at least that you can literally leave it until almost the last minute to make your decision.
Thank you for your email
The hotel will be closed until April 2020 temporarily however if the situations improve we may open earlier. You may want to check with us closer to dates.
Stay home, Stay safe and take care.
Kind regards,

That is reasonable in this current situation.
The B&B I'm staying at in the Lake District is currently saying before the 15th of May I can cancel FOC.
They may review nearer to will wait and see.

Things didn't feel the same with the other one after the gearbox problem.
So I have been looking around.
I looked at a BMW k 1600 ticked all the boxs and had removable panniers which I need but a bit older with higher mileage but they offered 2 years warranty 👍
But they messaged me they are closed and cannot px or let me view :ohplease:

Our local BMW dealership is reopening next week on an appointment system for key workers. I think they have a couple of K1600's in. Apart from the gimmicky DAB radio/music system on a K1600 which is still pretty good I have to admit, the other standard benefits of the K16 are cruise control, hill start, gear shift assist pro which on a bike such as the K1600 is beautiful. Why all big tourers don't come with cruise control is a mystery!
Even my Versys 1000 has cruise control as standard
But nothing matches a black GTR. Well done Pross. Did you consider an fjr as well?

Yes Pete I looked at them again but came back to what I love . Although Kawasaki nearly forced me away with the gearbox problem on the other one and their treatment.
Glad you came back. Would not want you drifting into any inferior brands. How old was your last;GTR and how much did you get for it?I'm being nosey you don't have to answer that.

Ooops my bad :mfr_lol:
Right folks, an update and a bearer of sad news.
I've had my personal secretary, Nigella :whistling: making some enquiries on our behalf re the Scottish meet up. The hotel had previously advised they would be closed throughout April, however as we draw towards the end of the second three week block of restrictions I had been mildly optimistic that the restrictions might be relaxed a little, albeit with social distancing still being enforced and face coverings being an option.
However as I said, Nigella, has heard back from our hotel and although the hotel have suggested making contact with them a week before our expected arrival, as matters currently stand the hotel does not anticipate it will be open this month.
So the decision is yours, if you feel it is appropriate to cancel now then that is your choice. Check your terms and conditions because if you cancel and the hotel does then open you may not get all your money back, however if the hotel is definitely going to be closed during the Spring Bank Holiday weekend then there should be no issues with a refund or using your deposit on an alternative date.
Now this brings us onto an alternative option, personally I still intend to go on the trip as soon as circumstances permit. Therefore I intend to retain my booking and transfer it to another date in June or July etc. Of those who fancied this trip, is there anyone else who would be able to attend later in the year? If you can that would be great as it would be a terrible shame to right this trip off completely.
We booked through Booking.com so we can leave it until 18th before we need to cancel (No deposit paid). We will contact the Hotel on the 15th to see if anything has changed. Hopefully we can keep the booking and turn up as booked.
If the Hotel say they won't open then we would be up for the trip later in the year, but would need to know dates asap as we have two other long weekends away booked this year.
Keep us informed.
Mick and Jue.
Mick thanks for the reply and the PM. Yes the next two weeks are make or break! I'll post any further updates as and when I can and drop everyone a PM also.
A shame if this cannot happens. I would aim for July more chance then I reckon.
Hopefully this is as Steve says just a delay and there may be a resurrection in the next few weeks or months.... sadly I am unable to do much else. Other trips and bookings I think are just going to get binned. So sad when there is so much to look forward to ... the long miles the wet miles the beautiful miles .... meeting up, drinking up and lots of catching up !
If you do get it going then I know you will all have a great trip. Enjoy if you can and there is always next year ... or the year after !
I'm fine to attend on a later date, the only exception being mid - September when hopefully, I am due in Scotland anyway with my wife and daughter!

Coincidentally I am also up in Scotland mid September on a family trip.
Steve, we've moved our May visit (that originally coincided with the GTR gathering) to mid - September, having abandoned our annual Tenerife pre - winter trip for this year. That should mean that next year brings both our month in Japan and Tenerife visit into the same year.
We should all be in Ashkirk (near to Hawick) mid - September, if you are anywhere near?
I'm in Blairgowrie about 100 miles north of you.
Probably a little too far then, Steve.

You're probably right. However there are no guarantees that even that will come off. :mfr_lol:
Looks like Scotland is going to be populated with GTR,s and the occasional GS in September !
I am going with some old work chums to support the guys from my team who are doing The Celtman Ironman Triathlon ... they need "supporting" for the weekend ... so it is a busy schedule .. all camping ... from London to Morecombe Bay to Aviemore to Ulllapool to Thurso to Nairn to Fort Augustus to Glencoe down to Bedal then home to Sussex ..not huge mileage as it works out at about 200 miles a day as we have a couple of nearly "stop" days when supporting but it about 1700 miles mid Sept so hopefully the weather will be kind to us ....
Needless to say I shall enchant you all with a thread of photos fun and madness ! :mfr_lol:

Yes I got one as well. You still have to manually confirm that you wish to cancel and you have until 23:59 hrs on the 18th to do so. I'm not rushing into cancelling at this stage, wait and see what happens during the next 10 days first.
Guys, I'm sorry this has fallen apart on you.
Originally I did not sign up for it as it clashed with the two weeks I had put aside for a run around France - and that ain't happening either.
Depending on what the eventual outcome is I may be back in the game if there's room for me but just at the moment it is impossible to plan for anthing with certainty.
I'm currently on Furlogh leave from work and although I don't know how long for, the period will probably encompass three weeks that I had booked as holiday anyway which I think I can carry forward.
So difficult to make any decisions about anything. :undecided:
Pete.

Hi Pete.
I'm in the same boat furloughed from Sunday 3 weeks followed by a weeks holiday 🤬
So as you say its hard to plan forward 👍
Obviously we had to cancel our May holiday, the events surrounding the NW200 are also cancelled as is the Kawasaki Triples Club Rally
So depending on the revised date for the meeting I could be up for it myself,
If you'll have me :mfr_lol:
What I am planning to do is cancel if need be my May booking for Scotland at the very last minute to avoid any fees and then re-book the same holiday again for June with the option to cancel penalty free if the restrictions still aren't lifted. I'm going to do this on a rolling month by month basis until the restrictions get lifted to avoid disappointment if they suddenly have a flurry of bookings.
Roger, of course if you were available you would be very welcome. It would be good to have the BMW hater along too on his imaginary new K1600 and maybe even Charlie could force himself to come and revisit Scotland as he seemed to enjoy it last time he went.

I will do my best to be there and promise not to 'have a go' at any BMW owners :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol:
BMW hater. Wonder who he is? On a personal basis there are a few test rides I want to do but obviously can't. As somebody else said so hard to plan. But my problems are nothing compared to the families who have been effected by this virus.

:agree:
Well I have finally admitted defeat and cancelled my hotel booking and the ferry crossings. Who would have thought it all those months ago when this was in the early stages of planning. :hammer:
**************************************
However, all is not lost. After Boris gave his update and potential projections last night for the forthcoming weeks and months and with the limited info coming through from Ms Sturgeon re the restrictions in Scotland it made sense to consider some alternative plans going forward. So, with that in mind I am looking at postponing the GTR meet until Thursday 6th August through to Monday 10th August. So the same days of the week just two months on. I have booked my accommodation with the option of free cancellation so I've nothing to lose. The only downside is the accommodation is a bit more expensive than it was in May but still worth every penny.
Please check out the update on page 1 for further information. Let's make the effort if we can and try and have a meet up before the biking season is over!! :mfr_lol:
Thanks for the update
Unfortunately we can't make the August dates. We are going to take the original dates off work and just go on a couple of leisurely rides around North Yorkshire each day.
Work have asked us to keep all dates booked so that everyone is not cancelling and leaving them all until the last part of the year which is understandable.
They're your holidays, you should be able to take them wherever you want.
Can't make those dates. Moved my ferry trip Dublin to Cherbourg from 8 June to 3 August. Ferry currently running as normal but French won't let foreigners into the country at the minute. Hoping that changes by then.
There's very little interest in the new dates, are folk just being cautious or are you all scared of the midges? :mfr_lol:

There are so many negatives to working, it's so restrictive :mfr_lol:
Ordinarily, today up and down the country people would have been prepping their bikes for a trip to the Scottish Highlands tomorrow. Such a sad time. :hammer:
Do some manufacturers bikes need more prepping than others?

Yes they do unfortunately. It's a fair journey to Scotland so I can just imagine many bike owners would have been fitting aftermarket cruise control devices to their machines to contend with the lengthy, tedious motorway miles. Some manufacturers, I can't quite recall which make, some German company have them fitted as standard on their touring bikes for no other reason than it makes perfect sense.
I still laugh, the first time Rusty joined me on a trip North, we headed out of Kirby Lonsdale onto the M6 where the satnav, (fitted as standard) announced 'In 170 miles turn left'. :mfr_lol:

Yes indeed everything required would have been laid on the bed next to pannier bags
Then halved :mfr_lol: then packed then put on the kitchen scales 👍 then ready to go .
Sadly won't happen I hope I can go to Devon in August 😱 .
But on the plus side new 16 plate arriving today ( Thursday 21st ) 👌

Apparently the same manufacturer had also decided to fit a gizmo to the same bike that takes regular photos of your eyelids and sends a shock through the seat to wake you up if you have dozed off. However, research showed you were only likely to fall asleep after riding all day. They found the bike couldn't run a full day without breaking down thus making their gizmo unnecessary.
Leave an open goal........

To help out I've done some calculations using standard differential calculus and your star sign and can confirm that the green stripe is good for 2 tenths on the 0-60 time and an extra 4mph on top speed.
That's not exact since I only used the value for pi to 4 decimal places but should be close enough for bar bragging if required.
Lovely bike. Health to enjoy, Tony.

There have been some developments.
The original hotel, Mutha Ben Doran at Tyndrum is still closed and they cannot confirm when they will be re-opening.
However, Tyndrum Lodges which is about 400 yards from the above hotel is open from the 15th July.
Therefore if anyone fancies attending this meet up before the next lock down, book your room. I have paid £374 for four nights including breakfast which is cheaper than the hotel would have been. The first post on page 1 has been updated but basically the dates are now 16th July to the 20th July, Thursday to Monday as before.
OK, I'm now up for this...
Does it need to achieve "critical mass" in terms of members committing or does it still happen even if it is just me any you

Ideally it would be good if at least half a dozen committed but I understand that for some there are more important personal matters to deal with than a jolly to Scotland with a bunch of bikers.
From my point of view I've booked, I could do with the break as this year has been difficult even without Covid 19. However I will be doing some work while up there and probably not too much riding.

I've also booked on the basis that even if it does not happen as a "meet" I'll enjoy a few days on my own on the bike; I've always promised myself some time on the bike in Scotland and that weekend is as good as any.
If others buy into it that would be good but if not I'm happy to entertain myself.

Well we're heading South tomorrow after four great days up in Scotland. We've had a mixed bag of weather but although it has rained, when it has rained it has been brief and mostly just showers, sometimes it was even warm which isn't the norm in Scotland.
I'm sure they'll be a write up possibly from both of us, photos and video too.

You can't beat yourself up for not being able to make it. This year has been unpredictable and difficult to make plans for virtually anything.
Scotland will still be here next year and I'm sure your new steed would love to stretch its legs then and pay the country a visit when the time is right.

Well by my reckoning it takes a minimum of two for a "meet" and we just about scraped through!
I've had a brilliant few days north of the border and will be sorting through the photos and video over the next week or so, but in the meantime this is the picture that captures it all for me:

It's obvious that you have developed a Drone piloting skill (aren't there courses/qualifications ?) but more apparent is the fact that you are able to visualise the end product once filmed and couple that to first class editing ... well done indeed
I'm now left waiting for the next and subsequent instalments
Roger, you will be pleased to know I started concocting a video, the first instalment last night. It will include my journey up to Scotland. (no motorway), I went via Windermere, Ambleside, Keswick, Dumfries for a change. The first video will include the Thursday and Friday rides and the second and final instalment will be from Saturday and Sunday. I didn't bother filming anything coming home as it was all motorway. Each video will incorporate some drone footage.
It's not really that difficult to put something together from the drone, a bit of luck and good light and you're half way there. The key is not to crash land in a Loch as that would be a very costly error!
:mfr_lol:
I can imagine that a watery grave would not be recommended
Do you now own your own Drone, ? I seem to recall that you borrowed one previously
No I've never borrowed one, I bought this recently.
The rules are quite strict, you have to do an online knowledge test, get an operators licence and an operators ID. You can't use it for commercial purposes without doing some additional training, I might look into that in the future but at this stage it's just a toy which I can use to get some unique footage for the videos.
Excellent
Great video Steve. I've been thinking of getting one of those drones for some time and the MA2 looks like a great option. Did you buy the drone with the fly more package? I assume that it packs up into a reasonably small bag as you took it with you on the bike. I would imagine it would be great to take abroad on holiday.... as long as you do your homework as to where you can fly of course.

Hi, yes the MA2 has some great reviews. Its my first ever drone and I'm very impressed with it. I bought the drone from Jessops, the fly more or combo package whatever it is called is worth the extra money. I paid £949 I think it was but you get three battery's, a selection of ND filters, a bag, multi charger etc. The bag is pretty small and can easily be carried in a pannier. If you plan to buy one to take abroad do check whether it is legal in that country to fly a drone in a specific area. Overall it is pretty easy to use but it still fills me with fear when I fly over water!
This photo is for OC to show him how user friendly the video editing software is...... :whistling:

You call that "user friendly" this is me we are talking about ya know Steve :mfr_lol:
Do also remember that most electric models use lithium polymer batteries. Due to the danger of fire within these batteries (which will burn without an external oxygen source and so is difficult to extinguish) LIPO's are generally not permitted on an aircraft, except when packaged in approved fireproof containers, and with permission of the airline.
The fire risks really are quite extreme - I recently watched a LIPO burning that was buried under a foot or so of earth, it was incredibly vigorous and quite frightening.
When transporting them around ordinarily, they are usually contained in a "LIPO" bag, which is itself fireproof to some extent.

Steve, you clearly have special talents
Well I'm sat here listening to great Soul classics including the brilliant Do You Know the Way to San Jose by Dionne Warwick and feeling sad but elated at the same time about this trip to Scotland. Sad that it's now almost a week since I returned home but elated that it came off, (to some degree) and that Scotland delivered on it's promise to deliver beautiful roads, very friendly people and great hospitality, everything we wish for when we go away I'm sure.
We all know the story, the trip was planned, a world catastrophe occurred and the trip was doomed to fail. After a number of date and accommodation changes over the following months, confirmation was finally obtained that there would be some accommodation available on the 15th July in Tyndrum, which was convenient as that was where we going.
My sincere thanks go to Colin, aka Flatfour for recommending Tyndrum Lodges into the equation as otherwise I probably wouldn't have considered them as I normally favour hotels. However the Lodges were ideal for my requirements. They were Covid ready, the staff were all fired up after being furloughed for so long and I cannot fault the way I was looked after there or the suitability of the room for my trip. I would have no hesitation in staying there again or indeed recommending them to anyone.
What can I say, it was disappointing that others couldn't make it in the same numbers as there were initially before the lockdown but considering how this year has evolved and the unpredictable nature of the pandemic and restrictions imposed because of it, it was perfectly understandable and unavoidable. Scotland I'm sure will be there for a few more years yet so you never know, there's always next year!!
On the build up in the final few days before launch day, (16th July) my wife often asked me if I still wanted to go as I didn't seem excited as in previous years, the truth was I was in denial, half expecting the Borders to be closed, the accommodation to not open as advertised, you get the drift. However I packed the bike and fuelled up the day before departure and then a feeling of excitement started to descend over me. It looked like this was actually going to come off!
I had already made a conscious decision that I would not be travelling up the M6 as in previous years. The audible warning I normally hear upon joining the M6 when heading to Scotland, TURN RIGHT IN 170 MILES is enough to put you off biking for life. Pete, (Rynglieder) was making his own way up from the west Midlands, so I could take my time and do the scenic route.
The plan was simple and specific, I wanted to see countryside!! Travelling from home I went via Windermere, Ambleside, Keswick, Cockermouth, Dumfries, Sanquhar, Kilmarnock, Paisley, Dumbarton and then continued North on the A82 with Loch Lomond to my right for over 20 miles. I had arrived. Approximately seven hours and three hundred miles later after setting off from home, it all made sense, I was tired, hungry but extremely happy.
Scotland is a sight for sore eyes, it never lets me down, it never fails to lift my spirits. I settled into my accommodation, unpacked and took in my surroundings. A couple of hours later I received a text, Pete had arrived and was outside having a cuppa. We introduced ourselves, bumped elbows to say Hi and settled down for a chat about our respective journeys North.
There isn't much in Tyndrum to start with but what there was, was open to one degree or another. We weren't going to starve! We planned to do our own thing day by day, but as both of us wanted to visit Kyle of Lochalsh, in particular Eilean Donan Castle we agreed we would travel there on the Saturday.
The Lodges.

I won't bombard you all with photos as I'm sure Pete will create a write up for you too. But here's a small selection from our time up in the Scottish Highlands.

steve, I really wish that I could have been there, alas it just wasn't possible.
I now feel like I've missed out, so your pictures and report are making me feel better about it
Next year my friend......next year
Nice one Steve .. The Lodges look nice. We shall have to book them for next year ! Like the idea of missing out the M Roads and going scenic. Photos are good ... obviously.
As you say Covid 19 has scuppered most peoples plans this year, I am sure many of here will be nodding their heads in agreement and I think it will go on and on and on ... almost recycling its self every few months until we get a vaccine. Splendid trip old chap and as always thanks for the posting
Thanks chaps for commenting on the brief write up.
For those of us who have plenty of time on our hands here's a video of some highlights of the trip. It's a mixture of photos, bike footage and drone footage. It's almost an hour long so make sure you put the kettle on first!

Very nice and to the point write up.
Was there any meals included at the lodges or was it survival rations like your picture
Will look at the vid when I have more leasure time 👍

Breakfast was as per the photo above. All other food was purchased from either the burger place just down the road or the Tyndrum Inn.
Stand by ... I shall watch this in instalments of 3 x 20 minutes ... looking forward to it as I dim the lights in my underground home cinema, call the girl over for some popcorn and settle down into the Chesterfield ... eh Steve !

:mfr_lol: The thing is Rusty isn't actually joking. :whistling:
Well ... I am back and watched the entire 59 minutes ... Very good Steve .. Oban looked lovely and the drone is clearly worth every penny AND you need to watch your battery life ! Very good .. look forward to the rest of it. Well done you.
Agreed, I have also watched the full first instalment and am now looking forward to part 2
Well done Steve
The sequel is complete and will be available this weekend..........

Steve, I've just finished watching the first of the video recordings that you have made of the trip.
It really is exceptional - if I could play it on the TV, I think that it would be difficult to distinguish it from a documentary that was professionally made.
The problem now is that I'm not sure that I need to go anywhere in the future - perhaps I should just wait until you make the trip and watch from the comfort of my armchair!
Many thanks for your lovely comments. If you have a Smart TV you can watch it on you tube.

I might just do that Steve ... good thinking
Great video Steve. Enjoyed the commentary with it too. Thanks for all your efforts.

No problems, I enjoy editing the videos and the wife says it keeps me out of trouble. :mfr_lol:
Steve, you're probably right, there is a "U - Tube" icon in the Apps section of the TV.
It is 4K, 3D and just about everything else. However I don't fiddle with it too much, as last time I attempted to watch one of my military DVD's on it the supplier (a local firm) needed to come out and reset it so that we could watch TV and satellite again. Apparently, I'd strayed into the area that determines where it takes its inputs from (I knew I should have waited for my wife to come home and asked her, however she does not like to watch my military films so I thought I would try things out myself).

The suspense waiting for the sequel is unbearable..... all round to Rusty's (take your own popcorn)
Saturday will soon be here. :mfr_lol:
Anticipation or patience is not my strong suite :mfr_lol:

Now you've confused me! It was a new clip. Either way if you enjoyed it, that's good enough for me.

Why thank you kind Sir! :mfr_lol:
I've just watched Part Two, and noticed that you rode past the Invergarry Hotel (on the left just before a junction where you turned right, toward Glencoe).
It is a quite lovely place that we stayed at a couple of years ago on a tour around in the car. Had you have turned right at that junction, it would take you to Loch (Lomond?) in a couple of miles, that being our route onward when we visited.
Excellent video again.
Only just got round to finishing watching as I have been away again twice since the Scotland trip, hopefully I will post a bit up over the next few days.
Thanks for the effort you have put in.
Pete.

Colin, I did visit Loch Lomond and some of the drone footage from the first video was from there.
I must have missed the Loch Lomond footage Steve, my wife says that I lack attention (funnily enough, my teachers had used to say the same).
For some raeson I don't seem to be able to post in various areas of the form still, so no write-up but here is a bit of video from my run up and first day out:

I shall settle down and watch this on the telly later when the Mrs has gone to bed.
yep, I'll watch tomorrow, I'm on my tablet just now watching telly
Is that what's called multi tasking :mfr_lol:
Well I stayed up well past by bed time to watch this. :mfr_lol:
It brought back some fond memories and I thought it was great. I could almost imagine myself there with you, oh, wait a minute, I was.
Hopefully the footage and beautiful scenery will convince others to go next year if we were to venture that far North again. :whistling:

I agree I watched this then kept googling some of the stops fantastic views and some of the roads . I definitely want to do this trip
Lovely ... Scottish scenery at its best .. although i know some who are up there at this very moment and the midges are causing mayhem !
Brilliant scenery, thanks for sharing
Thank you gents - I'm working on "day 2" (the ride where I accompanied Steve to Kyle of Lochalsh) but lots of other stuff has been getting in the way.
The quality from the Innovv camera on the GTR is not as good as the footage that Steve has already posted from that run, I think this is mostly down to the mounting postion on the bike and the vibration that runs through the fairing - something else to investigate when I get time.
Well I am very much looking forward to part 2.
I still can't seem to post anything on here that is more than a couple of sentences, I fear the forum modertors may have imposed a word limit on me to prevent me from going on a bit as I am prone to do.
Anyway, instead here is a link to a bit of video from "day three" of my weekend - some of it you will already have picked up on from Mr Lonewolf's video as it is the day we rode out together.

I'm hoping tp watch this later this evening when everyone has gone to bed and I have some peace and quiet! :mfr_lol:

Just finished watching it, excellent bit of editing and a great reminder of the trip.
