Title: For sale
Post by: coman37 on September 04, 2019, 02:06:05 PM
Just had the reminder through for this years insurance, I've been thinking about selling the GTR to make more room/ to allow me to buy a K1600GTSE.
The reason to sell the GTR is I'm just not doing the big mileage trips that I used to, combination of riding mates giving up/ moving etc. I now fly to my holiday destination in 5-10 hours rather than spend 2-3 days riding and then riding back ( so can't really justify the K16 either)
The bike is on eBay if anyone wants to make a bid

I will continue to lurk in the background

How will buying the K16 make you use your bike more? And it will be like going from a race horse to a. Shire horse.

K16's, second only to a C90 for nipping about, light, nimble, cheap to service or expansive tub of lard?

But its got all the toys that the GTR doesn't have, cruise control, integrated sat nav, integrated music, a screen that detects wind and noise.

Now I'm not going to criticize the excellent 2009 ABS that I have owned and ridden for the last 6 years. But I had to spend a lot of time and money to make it right for me, different screens, bolt on sat nav, Bluetooth music in pocket which need charging, bar risers.

Each year the forum members would speculate whether this was the year that they would launch the mk3 with all the mods that you have all been asking for, but it never came. Other manufacturers came out with better spec'ced alternatives (KTM 1290 if it didn't look like lady parts) Multistrada, S1000xrr, even Kawasaki's own Z1000SX, but none have the power or the presence of the GTR.

The K1600 has all the toys and more, heated seats, heated grips, riding modes, electronic suspension adjustments and all the powere and presence you could ever want.

As I said in my original post, I am not riding as much or as far as I used to so do not need to replace the GTR as I have other bikes which meet my needs, but I still got an itch for the K16

I may think again next spring

Mr Coman, I recently bought another K1600 GTSE and I'm loving it. I had one a few years ago but got rid of it in 2016, it was a 2011 model. My current one is a 2014 model, one owner from new, full BMWSH, venture shield, very expensive BMW top box, audio system, it even came with the sat nav and pannier bags etc and I paid approximately £10k less than it would have cost me new so being a Yorkshire man I wasn't complaining. There are some great bargains out there with K1600's as out of all BMW's bikes I'm sure the K1600 seems to suffer the biggest depreciation in the second hand market. Bad news for anyone who has originally bought new, great news for anyone who is happy to buy used, i.e. me.

I loved my GTR's, proper touring bikes and I have had some awesome trips on the GTR's in the past. I did look at some this year but as you correctly point out, it lacks certain essentials and expected accessories for what is branded as a flagship tourer, heated seats, cruise control, integrated sat nav and the prices were more than I paid for the K1600 which simply didn't make financial sense.

The K1600 gives you more for your £ than the GTR but both are perfectly capable of achieving the same end game. Since buying the new K1600 in July I had another bike trip to Scotland, my third this year, the first two on GSA's the latter on the K16. I have a video of some of my trip if you would like to see it.

I also find my latest BMW (K1300 GT) really serves its purpose (two - up travel and holidays) very well. Although it's far from new, as Steve says of his K1600 it has everything that you could want fitted as standard, and more.

I previously owned a Versys 1000 (MK 11) and before that a 2012 GTR. Both were really good bikes and the Versys was only sold because my wife found it difficult to climb on to the pillion seat following a hip operation (she is short, the footrests are high!). Therefore I needed a bike with lower footrests and the BMW came along. For anyone who thinks that lowering the rear footrests is the answer to this problem it wasn't for us, because with a lowering kit fitted, the footrests were too far down when she was seated.

The BMW is really well built and, despite eight years and 40,000 miles, looks as new. It was, though a one owner bike supplied and serviced by the same dealer throughout and the original owner bought a new BMW again. I found that the GTR, whilst a nice looking bike was less powerful in the rev range that I normally use and less solidly built (thin plastics, even the screen was replaced under warranty, due to cracks around the fixing points found whilst cleaning) and the Versys, whilst using better quality plastics etc. did not have the basics of an electric screen, heated grips and so on, only some of which could be retrofitted. The BMW has all of that, as well as heated seats, adjustable seat height and handlebar height etc.

Both the GTR and Versys were bought new and much enjoyed, however with this, my second BMW, I think that I have found the make that suits me best for the job that I need it to do.

Rog, I think that you are right, we are drifting.

However, I suppose that since few of us own a GTR now it seems somewhat inevitable, otherwise the site will just fade away through lack of content and, given the people that we have met through GTR ownership and still like to communicate with, that would surely be a pity?

C you also get terrible gearbox, extra weight and dubious reliability According to Ride magazine.

Not in my experience, weight as expected for a 1400cc tourer, never had a problem with gearbox, the only reliability issue I had was with a battery that gave up
