Title: Valve check.
Post by: GTRpilot on July 05, 2019, 10:28:50 AM
After much thought, should I or shouldn't I, decided to get the valve check done at 28000 miles.
4 exhaust valves were tight below tolerance, 4 other's close to minimum and 4 inlet also close.
Glad I had it done , take from this what you will.

Definitely worth doing. Imagine if you dropped a valve.....

My thoughts exactly, well worth doing for my bike

I have 2 trains of thought as to why it is worth doing:
1, Whoever built it at the factory will be somewhere near but not necessarily that particular, therefore after the running in period and general settling over time it is worth having done and very  likely if done properly will never required again.
2, Cost of valve clearance check say £400.00, how much is an engine???

On our big stuff at work we check valve clearances at 2,000 hrs, 60,000 miles from new and they then never get touched again unless we strip an engine for some reason. We have plenty with 40,000 plus hrs, 1,000,000 plus miles and we have no issues with valve trains.

I re-shimmed my valve gear at the end of 2017 at circa 27,000 miles.

I've done a few bikes and they have always needed at least a couple of clearances adjusting at the first scheduled check.
However, after that clearances never seemed to change drastically, if at all.

@GTRpilot, good decision which could well have avoided future expensive damage

Just for info, I had a little bit of other work done as well, the bill was £290 which I was happy with

A very good price I'd say, credit to whoever carried out the work for being fair on their prices.

That's a very good price for a valve shim. Where did you get that done?

Many thanks. That might be my winter project. Drop off and collect the week after.
Did they remove all the plastics for that price?

Yep, just rode the bike down complete, I live close enough I can walk home, also wired in the rear brake light for my Topbox at the same time. He's done all my bikes servicing and tyres for around the last 3 year's now, cannot fault him, nice chap to boot.

Very interesting to hear how much you paid and being happy with the service.

Unfortunately, too far for me and was thinking about having it done as well soon as discovered a slight leak on the top engine seal. Oil level not dropping but enough to make the area dirty over a few months.
Also looking at the having the plugs changed at the same time.

Has anyone got any recommendation for a good (and honest ) mechanic in the Cambridge area?

Thanks

Is this not a DIY job, asking as I'd planned on doing it myself when the time comes.

I did mine in 2017, I regard myself as a competent amateur mechanic, who has done a number of valve clearance checks/re-shims in the past.
Gaining access on the GTR is hard, there is a lot of bodywork to remove, and you'll need to support under the engine to remove both upper engine mounts.
I did the job over a number of days when the bike was not needed.
