Title: Top Box
Post by: Bluesman on May 01, 2019, 11:37:31 AM
mornin all,

New to touring bikes, collecting my 1400 soon, it has the panniers, which I think are standard, but no top box, I just typed top box into search!! It's a popular topic, to save me scrolling through all that info, is there a favorite box, do any fasten straight to the rack, are any not silly money?

Givi Monokey, is excellent quality albeit slightly more expensive, (Monokey variety is IMHO better than Monolock) I have had a Givi maxi top box for about 8 years and it is still going strong

You may need a top box plate which is available from Givi ....check the link below......... hope that helps

https://www.givi.co.uk/my-motorcycle#KAWASAKI,GTR_1400_(07_%3E_15)

EDIT:... just a thought , somewhere like motorcycle planet may have more choice at a better price ... good luck

Kawasaki sell a plate that replaces the original plate (bolts down in the same position) and that takes Givi Monokey top boxes.

https://www.kawasakioriginalparts.com/accessories/2016-models/gtr-1400-grand-tourer-2016/kawasaki-gtr1400-2015-47l-topcase-system-carrier-plate.html

There are a few Givi boxes that let you buy an "unpainted top cover" which you then fit onto the box after you've had it sprayed to colour-match your bike.

Hope that helps.

Cheers

Paul B.

PS: That plate fits all years and all models. It certainly fitted on my '09 bike.

Where they get £84 for a bit of moulded plastic is a rip off ,as is the colour coded Kawasaki top box a flimsy bit of very expensive kit , looks the part tho ,

Ebay happen to have a 2nd hand monokey replacement plate
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kawasaki-GTR-1400-Carrier-Plate-99994-0620-/303037050421
Its a straight replacement for the original plate and gives a nice solid platform for the topbox.

Much better than sticki8ng the Givi plate on top of the existing plate

I have been stopped twice originally by friendly drivers telling me that my topbox was really bouncing around.
It was because the original rack is really flimsy.
I have replaced the entire thing with this
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LUGGAGE-RACK-WITH-PLATE-MONOKEY-GIVI-KAWASAKI-GTR-1400-2007-2015-COD-SR410/273719873696?epid=825413520&hash=item3fbaf9d0a0:g:T8YAAOSwR6RaRRBZ&frcectupt=true

And it is rock solid!!! Takes a bit of time putting it together but once on, it will never move! :-)
With a Givi maxia!! It has been a perfect combination for many years.

Agreed (they are a bit of a fiddle to fit) but VERY solid and ideal for carrying a large loaded case

Bluesman..... Remember to observe the maximum recommended loading capacity of Top Box and side cases, overloading could cause instability of your bike

I have the genuine Kawasaki one fitted as advertised here with a 54 litre top box with no problems whatsoever.

I've got one of these for sale on here, as well as a Shad expandable top box 👍
Would do a deal for both 😬

That's a Givi monolock box re branded by Kawasaki. Bear in mind the max load recommended is 3 kg. If you want to do some serious touring and use it fully loaded you should consider doing what I did. Buy a second hand Givi monokey box and plate and swap it over for long trips. Doesn't look as good but holds 10kg. 4 bolts to be removed and replaced won't take long. Change it back when you're home.

Bought this for another of my bikes, not a thick plastic as a givi but otherwise very happy with it and only £25

That's a great price. That's the sort of price a plastic box should be,  not the crazy prices Givi and the like charge.

I'm not dissing the £25 top box above as I don't have any experience of it. However, other cheap boxes I've tried weren't properly waterproof resulting in having to wrap everything in plastic.
I've had several Givi and Kappa boxes ( Kappa is also made by Givi) and all have been totally waterproof.
New Givi are expensive but there are plenty for sale used. Buy a monokey for about £60 and you'll get that for it when you sell it.

I bought two 52 litre NonFango boxes back in the late 90s. Both are still going strong and should outlast me. Shame that they went under as they were Givi's only competition back then.

I had a pair of givi e41's on my last bike (MG Stelvio) leaked like sieves, always packed everything inside a bin bag.
£25 topbox mounted on my MG 1100 sport, so far so good.

btw for sale pair of e41's best offer??
