Title: Bank Holiday Weekend Ride
Post by: Lonewolf on April 20, 2019, 02:03:44 PM
Anyone doing anything special for the BH, a solo ride, a group ride, going somewhere different, or to your favourite haunt? Post a photo or two and tell us about your day out. 😁

At least you'll be on double time if you're working the BH weekend.

Well it seems that either nobody went out for a BH ride or you're all that busy out on your bikes that you haven't seen this thread yet.

What seems like many years ago now we had a GTR meet at The Lower Lode Inn, GL19 4RE, just outside Tewksbury. Dave (2kwaks) recommended the place and by sheer coincidence he, Asif, Nigel and I managed to secure the only four rooms they had in the pub, (we were very lucky) :whistling:  Many of you other lucky souls camped, how we all envied you!

The pub has been a regular haunt of mine ever since & I love it for so many reasons.

So I had another trip down there yesterday, 22-24 degrees of glorious sunshine and I wasn't disappointed. The landlady, Sam was saying that during Friday, they had been so busy that they were on the verge of running out of supplies, like beer and stuff! She had arranged for another delivery of beer which arrived while I was there. After I'd been to the pub I went to The Slaughters, which is another terrific place if you've never ventured down this neck of the woods.

Here's a few photos from my day out,

I remember seeing and playing with this chap, Alfie, a lovely liver & white Springer all those years ago.....  sadly he is no more,

This is Bailey, an old boy who the Landlady, Sam is looking after temporarily. He looks like he's fairly content!  :mfr_lol:

I saw this outside and thought it might appeal to some of our car enthusiasts. It certainly looked to be in good condition. In fact I followed it in and have some video footage of it somewhere.

Then as I mentioned I went to The Slaughters. The Slaughters is like a scene from a chocolate box image.....I went here once with Charlie and a tiny cottage was up for rent, we enquired and it was £3500 PCM!!

A typical 'modest' property probably worth well in excess of one million.

Kawasaki Riders Club had a gathering there a couple of years ago.  Lovely venue and well positioned for a good day's Rideout

I was near to the pub a couple of weeks ago, as I went to Longhope to visit Mother.

This weekend I decided to travel only minimum distances on the roads, even at 09:30 yesterday morning there was slow traffic  at nearby Swaffham, presumably heading for the coast some 25 miles north. I took to the air instead, where at least there was some peace!

It always seems to me that the first and last Bank Holiday weekends of the year suffer particularly heavy traffic?

Yeah it's a shame they don't have more rooms at the Inn, but they seem to have acquired quite a few caravans recently and then there's always the camping pitches. It's a hidden gem!

Same here, I tend to avoid the first and last Bank Holidays and stay at home, which is what we did and it has been superb.......  I can ride out whenever I want anyway and it's definitely quieter during the week when there are less loonies on the road

Glad you enjoyed your run, it looks like a nice destination.

When I have the time to take a bike out for the day I often struggle to know where to head for – OK, you don't have to be anywhere and there is nothing wrong with just following where your front wheel leads you but having a target sometimes focuses me to actually get up, get dressed and get out. Of recent years I have tended to pick out an English Heritage site or similar as a point to plan a ride around.

The last two weekends have seen the GSX getting all the love. The first time round because I was meeting up with a mate who also had one (although he confounded me by actually turning up on a Triumph café racer), on Good Friday the GSX was therefore at the front of the garage and being fundamentaly idle it seemed like a good idea to go out on it again – anyway, it is the perfect bike for the sort of ride I was planning; no need for a fairing on a warm dry day, comfortable and agile enough for a good few miles and there was no need for luggage – just my DSLR camera in a back pack.

It was to be an invasion of Wales – well, a bit of a border skirmish I suppose.

Once I had cleared Bewdley I was free of most of the bank holiday day trippers and the oldies heading for the garden centres and ran out toward Leominster. I'd considered the café frequented by bikers at Crossgates for a refreshment break but whilest biker's cafes are great places to meet up you can sometimes be waiting ages to get served on a sunny public holiday – I opted for a Costa Express out of a machine the other side of Leominster and cracked on.

At Crossgates (where the biker's café did not actually look that busy after all) I turned north in the direction of Welshpool but after passing Newtown I cut back east for Montgomery where I parked up in the small town's square and had a two course lunch of Ginster's sausage roll and Walkers French Fries. It was washed down with a Cherry Coke as the place did not seem to keep a good cellar.

The bike hauled me up the hill above the town where I roamed the ruins of the castle for a while (free admission). Not the greatest of the border castles by any means, but I had never been to Montgomery before and that for me was as good a reason as any to go.

The return run to Stourbridge was a bit more direct than the run out and started with some less familiar roads before reaching Craven Arms where I was on better known territory and was able to pick the pace up just a little.

A good day out on the bike, hopefully there will be more to come soon.

Hi, many thanks for your post and photos, I do like the GSX, I was often tempted by them after trying other naked bikes such as the Yamaha XJR 1300 and Honda CB 1300 but then moved onto the GTR. The GSX is a perfect bike to keep you cool that's for sure on a hot day. Now you know where the Lower Lode Inn is you'll have to take a ride down there, I doubt you'll be disappointed.
