Title: Is my exhaust legal?
Post by: carvern on July 14, 2011, 08:31:53 AM
Purchased an exhaust from http://www.xtremestainless.co.uk/shop/Kawasaki/GTR_1400 but although the website states they are legal there are no E or British Standard marks on the can. Have searched the web and there are many conflicting views as to whats legal and whats not, but has anybody got a definative answer as to how I stand with MOT and PC Plod?

found this

Regulations to control the noise were indeed introduced in 1996 by the Motor Cycle Silencer & Exhaust Systems Regulations 1995 SI 1995/2370.

This states that exhausts that exceed the required noise level should not be used on the road.  Exhausts should be marked with the approval mark to show it meets the legal requirements with Britain and Europe.   These marks are either a British Stadnard (BSAU 193a) or the European "E" mark.  Without these marks you may face a fine and points and a failed MOT.

The above paragraph basically ascerts that whilst a can may be legal in terms of construction and db's......it must be stamped. I suspect that this stamp is what MOT testers would use to validate the legality of any exhaust system

I would ask the manufacturer directly where the BS mark is on the exhaust..if it is not present, then i would query with them how they overcome the BS stamp issue in terms MOT/Legality...i dunno, maybe they can issue a certifiacte or something ??

and yes they do look like nice exhausts...i like the carbon twin port ;D

It should say on the rivit band that it is for road use and it will also have the required markings on there. Obviously if you take the decibel killer out it won't be road legal.

If it hasn't got the required markings as stated above I'd be tempted to get them to send you one that is correctly marked up. But that's just me.

I would agree that if it doesn't have either the BS standard or E markings on the can then I would query it with the suppliers otherwise it will be picked up when the bike has an MOT.

The range of cans do like nice I even I could be tempted at those prices - did I really say that  :-[

Yup, agree it has to be marked, even the ones Beowulf sell unbranded on eBay ate E marked. Those look lovely I have to say, stick an E mark on and I could be tempted to the double exit stainless  ::)

It says on their website that their road legal exhausts have a BS stamp on the rivet band.

"Street with the traditional rolled out exhaust tips, these are full road legal and come with the BSI stamp on the rivet band.
Race with ribbed the slash cut exhaust tip, these are designed to give maximum power gains and style for track days (ADD a removable decibel killer to make the road legal) these cans have no stamp in the rivet band."

Did you by chance order the Race version?

I'm tempted by the double one as well.

Who is going to be the guinea pig and buy it first?  ;D

Lonewolf you are not alone, I have the std can and have no plans to replace it although the dual muzzys system does look very nice

Looking at the site it seems that only certain ones are road legal, did you buy one that says it's for track use?

I have asked about stock availability on the twin exit ones and as they are only half an hour from me, I have asked if I can come have a look, will update later.

Thanks for all your help guys, have spoke with the company and they have omitted to stamp the exhaust, so are sending a replacement with the correct E or BS marks. They are apparently a new product line for this company so are learning all the time. Will post a pic later for you all to see, does sound and look pretty good, couldn't justify the price of a leo vince or akropovic but thought these looked good value and quality for the money.

Ok here is the message that I sent:

Hi I'm looking at buying a single carbon oval for my gtr1400 can you tell me does it have the appropriate bs or e Mark on it and does it affect the fueling of the bike lastly I'm only about half an hour from Hixon so do you have it in stock and can I collect?
>
> Thanks

> Mark

And here is the Reply:

Hello Mark

They do have the bs number on the rivet band, there should be no need to reset the mapping
We make the exhausts to order so the earliest I can get on made would be Wednesday next week
I can offer free fitting if you bring the bike over.

Kind Regards

Andy

Pics of it on the bike would be nice but a soundtrack of what it sounds like would be nicer

Will try get a video sorted so you all can hear as soon as.

Its amazing how heavy the potato launcher is when you take it off. Only exhaust worse is the twin pipes on the B-King.

Do RamMount make a holder for potato launcher ?? ?? ??

Just a note for anyone buying this exhaust, have found when I fit the panniers the exhaust will touch the bottom so I have had to make a small bracket to drop the exhaust slightly. Bought some pre drilled steel from b & q and cut to size. Not a big problem but be aware before you fit. Still looks and sounds great and good value.

Thats why I have no plans to change the exhaust, it can be more hassle than its worth. I still say the original pipe looks pretty good and suits the bike

My understanding is that if there are no stamps or markers then you won't get an MOT simple as that !
Ps .... they look great but i LOVE the standard exhaust and would not change it for anything  ;D ;D

With the panniers off the stock exhaust looks too big but with the panniers fitted which is how I always ride it I think the stock exhaust is in keeping with the rest off the bike.

I have always kept the stock pipes with every bike I have ever had which is a lot in over 35yrs

Yes the Mortar Launcher looks tolerable with the panniers on (better on the 10/11 as they shortened it) but anyone who thinks it looks good need their eyes tested.
It's an eyesore, a monstrosity, a carbuncle on the arse of the universe.  >:(

This my GTR the day I took delivery.

design and appearance are not discussed impartially .....

When I had (the new) Hayabusa, I was also convinced that the original exhausts were absolutely "a good looking". Good design and fits perfectly with the bike.

The same is true with GTR1400 .... Someone has spent tons of hours in relation to appearance and design. I think that the original exhaust is super nice. But I will admit if you remove the side bags, then it seems to exhaust the right fierce! But who is running without side bags?

I would agree the standard exhaust looks ok with the panniers on but it doesn't look quiet right if you do ride around without panniers but the only time panniers come off is when I am cleaning the bike.

I can understand why people would want to go for an after market can ie sound of the exhaust note, saving weight (although I don't see that saving weight has any real benefit on this bike) but I haven't really seen a design that I like that I feel compliments the design of the bike with or without panniers on.

My main reason for the aftermarket can was to make sure that the idiot drivers that surround me every day can hear me.
Since they never look, having hi-vis clothing is a waste of time.
It is pretty loud and I like it that way.
If the usual cellphone moron hears that noise, they just HAVE to look! <LOL>

I ride without the panniers 99% of the time.
Why would I fit them? I spend 20-40 miles every day filtering between cars/vans/trucks and they would just get scratched and scuffed, much like my mirrors have.
Everything I need fits in my topbox.
I often have to follow ST1300s and sometimes other bikes with panniers and they are SLOW through the traffic.

If you live away from a massive city like London I envy you.

I'm with you here Boomer, probably only have my panniers on 20% of the time, top box is plenty big enough, but of course have the panniers on for when I'm on holiday touring. Hence changed the exhaust as it just don't look right on it's own, think the designers had 5 minutes to come up with the exhaust on a Friday afternoon!!!

I'm a total contrast to you then Carvern, I can count on one hand how many times I have used the GTR without the panniers on since I bought it.
Title: Re: Is my exhaust legal?
Post by: fatharry on August 09, 2011, 03:47:07 PM
I ride most of the time without panniers, and like some-others on here i only ever tend to load up when i am off on a road trip :o
Title: Re: Is my exhaust legal?
Post by: fred24 on August 09, 2011, 06:40:41 PM
A double amputee can count the number off times I've riden without panniers.

The bike looks a lot better with them on and they are no wider than the mirrors so if the mirrors fit the gap then the rest of the bike does and they give me somewhere to put my lid+gloves when I stop for a P and/or coffee - may think differently if I had a top box but I don't

Hardly EVER ride with the panniers ON ... top box is plenty big enough .... but of course if I were to ride up to North Wales for a weekend trip .......  ;D

hi i have bit the bullet and ordered a carbon exhaust with two pipes, assured bt the manufacturer that these are stamped and are street legal, mentioned that when they are fitted they may catch the panniers,(never have my panniers on unless i need them)he has a modified link pipe which should do the job,he is going to send me the two different pipes so i can give him feedback, should arrive saturday.once i have fitted them i will post a video on youtube, will let you know ,cheers  keith.
