Title: swingarm corrosion
Post by: Timr75 on November 08, 2018, 04:54:38 PM
Has anybody had issues with swingarm corrosion around axle securing nut area and rhs lower torque/pivot point .
Bike is just over a year old ...9k  but requested this under warranty 3 months ago and at approx 7k
Kawasaki dealers are only ones to have removed wheels
Requested under warranty as have had  exhaust end caps replaced under warranty and rear shock replaced (800 miles and only adjusted o  last  4 clicks ) But Kawasaki have come back saying as bike is used all year round they won't warrant it to be replaced..
my opinion is that where axle nut has been removed  an imperfection in surface has been exposed   and pivot point well who knows .

Just thought if anyone else has had it and successful in replacement i have a better arsensal to fire at KHI .
If it was a five year old  bike or that i would think oh ok

Tim, I haven't forgotten about you, I've just been very busy with various things. I know you said the bike is just over one year old, how long have you had it and how long had you had it for when you first brought it to the attention of the dealer?

Your bike is still covered by Kawasaki warranty

Tell your dealer that you want this fault repairing and that you will not take 'NO' for an answer

Tim, in its most simplistic form as your bike was new when you bought it, it is as OC has said, still under the Kawasaki warranty and therefore there is an expectation that the fault will be rectified. However you need to check the terms and condition of the warranty and see if there are any exclusions for paint. Even with a used bike you have rights but we'll focus on your bike which as you say, you bought new.

The comment from Kawasaki that as your bike is used all year round they won't cover it, is ludicrous and would get laughed out in Court. You however need to make a decision as to how strongly you feel about this and whether you are prepared to accept this or whether you are going to deal with it robustly.

Your bike should be fit for the purpose it was supplied for and I would strongly urge you to look closely at the Consumer Rights Act 2015. You need to address your claim for damages directly with the retailer, not Kawasaki.

This act, the Consumer Rights Act also applies to motor vehicles, new or old although claims for faults with vehicles are dealt with in a slightly different way than other goods.

As the bike was older than six months when you first brought the defect to the attention of the dealer, the burden is on you to prove that the product was faulty at the time of purchase. This is obviously no easy task and would probably necessitate you obtaining some form of expert report from a suitably qualified person. However another way for you to present your case is to provide evidence to your dealer of similar problems on other bikes ideally of the same make and model and you have at least one example of that in this thread.

If you had brought this defect to the attention of your dealer, (had you been aware of it) within six months from the date of purchase, the matter would have been very easily remedied.

From what you have disclosed already, you have attempted to have the matter dealt with, regrettably unsuccessfully under the warranty and therefore you may be entitled to a price reduction from the dealer but you need to be forceful with them but in a completely civil manner and not threatening in any manner.

***Be advised that many dealers do read these threads so be cautious that you don't reveal your game plan to the other side unintentionally***

If you wish feel free to PM me with a mobile number and I'll call you and give you the benefit of my experience.

My bike is a 64 reg with extended warranty last your I took it to a dealer my local one Cradley Heath Kawasaki.
I purchased the bike from riders of Bristol and Cardiff.
I had paint flaking on the exhaust.
When it was being MOTD at Cradley I showed them the exhaust they took photos and sent to Kawasaki a few days later they phoned me to arrange to have th exhaust swopped.
Now problem at all . Could it be your dealer just a suggestion good luck with it 👍

Was it Kawasaki who refused the warranty claim, or the dealer?
Some dealers don't like doing warranty work as Kawasaki decide what to pay them to do the work.
If that is the case my advice would be to approach a different dealer and if you get a result, make sure that you publicise the good and poor dealers.
If Kawasaki have such poor quality coatings on their swing-arms that they are turning down warranty claims on spurious grounds, then they may well be aware that they have a problem and are trying to get it to go away.

My GTR has quite a bit of corrosion on the swing-arm and some of the other links, but 11 years, 73k miles, and being ridden through at least 4 winters has caused that. At 7.5k miles the coating should look new, even if it was ridden through a British winter.

I think there is some merit in thinking that the dealer is not that happy to do warranty work.  I had an oil leak from the valve cover/cam sensor.  I was told that although it took all day to do, they were only paid for 3 hours work, the "official" book rate

As far as im concerned I have no issues with the Dealer and having had previous warranty work undertaken by them ( exhaust and shock) with no issues .
Have sent email with information regarding the 66 plate have being replaced and as corrosion is in the same location on both bikes in a similar style i feel it is a manufacturing defect than a isolated incident .
First two pictures are my bike when first reported

The pictures clearly indicate that no misuse or damage has been caused to the affected area and that the corrosion has been progressive

As far as I'm aware there are no corrosion exclusions within the Kawasaki warranty

It should therefore be a straightforward replacement under the terms of the warranty

well had a response today .
Although Kawasaki don't accept its a manufacturing defect they are now willing to accept the claim and just waiting on parts release .
Again Dealer has been brilliant .
Hopefully it not too long as had already got Allyearbiker booked for a next weekend ..
Thanks to all contributions and glad to see the gtr collective still alive and well.

warranty does not cover cosmetic but as said i don't class this as a cosmetic issue .

Any further updates Tim ?

Like you I cannot accept that this issue is 'cosmetic', that is just Kawasaki trying to wriggle out of a bona fide warranty claim IMHO

They wouldn't want to 'set a precedent' now would they   :whistling:

Kawasaki agreed to replace the v section on rhs ( i had not realised it was a seperate section to the swingarm ...
So that's all been done .
They wanted part to be coated in acf50 at fitting and day aftee had bike fully acf50 as well .
Dealers suggested getting some paint ptotecter plastic film for the under pivot section to reduce stone chips .
I duly raised the area of concern on the lhs of swingarm and it has been noted for future reference .
Dealers have been brilliant and again Thanks to the collective Connie Owners for their help .
