Title: New member looking for advice.GTR or VFRx
Post by: adventurejunkie on August 23, 2018, 09:41:37 AM
Gooday fellas looking at a new motorcycle but undecided. Looking at GTR or Honda Crosstourer Dct. Will test ride both bikes soon but wondered if anyone owned both these bikes to compare. I know they are very different but very similar priced second hand. Have owned several GS and big Guzzi's but fancy a change.

Can't comment on the Honda as haven't ridden it but a friend has one and loves his.
I love the GTR motor, handling and braking, but the seat is not very good so if you do buy one, budget for seat improvements.

I've had 4 GTRs over the years ... so you can assume I like them......I have never ridden a CrossTourer but hear good reports, as you have pointed out the two bikes are very different so it's not a straightforward comparison

As you have already said, you need to try them both and see which ticks the most boxes for you and your needs

FWIW the GTR is a stonking bike

Can I ask why you had 4 already do you just like to keep them low mileage or did they have issues? I generally like to keep my bikes long term and believe the engines are good but the roads and climate don't help.

I'm on my second one. I have had no issues with either and I did over 30000 miles on first  one. Only sold it because found low mileage one at good price. Much more reliable than the BMW's that I have owned. Had a few issues with my last Honda as well.

My bikes have always been bought new, I purchased my first one in 2008, and the last one in 2016, so over a period of 8 years in total.

There has never been a single issue with any of them, the earlier one did have a recall for luggage catches and a headlight adjustment knobs, another had a recall for a modification against dirt ingress around the rear brake pedal, but there has never been a single mecanical issue with any of them

I changed them because I lie to update my bikes after about 6000 miles

I tried a crossdresser when I still had my guzzi stelvio. It did everything ok but was just dull to ride.
Every Honda I've ever bought new (and I like them for commuting) has been recalled.

There's a bike in the "For Sale" section that is a *very* good price! You could buy that, and if you didn't get on with you genuinely would not lose money on it.

Just a thought.

Cheers

The GTR is an awesome bike it will do almost anything you ask of it with relative ease and comfort i find the seat very comfortable. look after the bike an it will look after you having said that the 24k service is a big one  and can be expensive depending the garage you use. Basically if you are looking to buy a higher mileage one check the 24k service has been done correctly ( valve adjustment - plugs etc ). No real issues with the bike just common sense checks.

If the bike was no good i would have walked away a long time ago - i'm on my 5th one now, i have ridden lots of bikes of all types in my 41 years of riding but the GTR is by far the best.

My mate had a crosstourer and I had a go on it and was impressed by its good handling and ride quality , but the gtr is bullet proof  and a power house don't worry about valve checks they keep on going plus how come they need new plugs at 24000 as iridium plugs are good for 50000 miles , just change the oil and it will keep on going ,

I have had Hondas before and their build quality is indeed very good ... but you won't go wrong with a GTR. I may not have one now but it was without doubt (apart from my current bike   ) the best I have had in a long long time ... really.

My son has a VFR1200X (nonDCT).  He was going to buy my 2011 1400GTR but decided on balance the Honda was more to his liking as he'd come from a 1050Tiger.  His Honda is a great bike but the seat is a tad higher than the GTR for me.  The DCT and GTR are like apples and oranges, though I've not tried the former.

Depends on your own personal circumstances. We have had a GTR for 8 years and done plenty of miles across UK, Scotland, Ireland and Europe with no complaints from me or my wife on pillion except for the screen (yawn). In those years we have tried/tested Rts, GSs, Gold Wings, Pans, big Triumphs, and 800/1200 Honda V4s. Yes in many ways each of them are better than the GTR but my wife says nothing we have tested comes close to the GTR with a decent after market seat. I must agree with her, nothing comes close, but that is our opinion and it suits us.
