If you are staying at The Buccleuch Arms Hotel in Moffat, then ask the owners for the good ride outs. They have got a big map on the wall with it all marked out, and they will also help you decide which is best for what you want to see and do. Great food as well.........

No specific routes, but A701 to/from Moffat has some great views.
If you want to get off the M6/A74[M]/M74 then the B7076 runs parallel to the motorway. It is what used to be the A6 before they built the motorway, is good for NSL over several miles and runs through towns and villages for a stop off that is not motorway services.

I've stayed at the Best Western in Moffat a few times. They've an annex - self contained 3 double bedrooms with kitchen, T.V lounge etc.. works out cheaper than if each bedroom paid seperately.
As Doebag said 701 is a good road.
I would take the 708 up to peebles for a stop. If weathers holding up take 703 to penicuik, if closing in, take 72 to Blyth Bridge and 702 back to moffat. In Penicuik join 702 back to Moffat via Blyth Bridge.
Moffat south to Gillisbie - Eskdalemuir T/R 709 to langholm, 6318 to Gilsland (tea stop Megs cafe) continue on 6318 T/L Nunwick, Wark, Hott, Stannersburn, Keilder, T/L juction 6357, T/R Juction 6399 to Hawick, Join A7 to Selkirk. T/L 7009 to Eskdalemuir - Boreland - Moffatt.
Enjoy, you've picked a good spot to rideout from.
I've can't help with the lakes, roads too busy to interest me.
