Title: rear wheel removal on GTR1100
Post by: GTRTONY on July 08, 2011, 11:46:31 AM
Hi Guys
need to fit a new rear tyre to the bike before a trip to Switz and looking at the prices, it is so much cheaper to fit to wheel if off bike than to a wheel that is still on bike.
can anyone advise a complete novice when it comes to rear wheel removal (and most other things mechanical) the best way to go about it and tools etc. required. don't want to attempt blind with the abs sensors etc.
help and advise would be greatly received
Tony

Have I not done a guide on this already? (Or was it one that I intended to do?)

It's not that difficult. You just need to know what bolts to undo and what to torque them back to.

I'll see if I have some pics tonight

For the sake of about £20 would it not be better to just let the experts take the wheel off? I'd be worried in case the thing toppled!

LOL, you are all wussies!  ;D

Put a piece of 2" thick wood under the centrestand and have a friend/wife help you get it up <smirk>.
Unbolt the rear caliper from its bracket and pull it off the disc.
If you have the hugger fitted you may need to remove it.
Remove the split pin and undo the castle nut on the end of the axle.
Tap the end of the axle until it starts to move and then pull the axle out.
Undo the big allen bolt that holds the brake caliper bracket and move the bracket out of the way.
Remove the spacer and put it on the axle.
Pull the wheel off it's splines and remove from bike.
Be aware that there is a spacer tube that you should not leave attached to the wheel.
I put mine on the axle and fit the nut loosely for now. Sometimes it sticks to the final drive, sometimes to the wheel.

Now get the tyre changed. Be careful not to knock the disc and warn the tyre people that it has tyre pressure sensors.

Then refit the wheel by fitting the spacer tube to the final drive, lift the wheel into place and get it onto the splines (the hardest job).
Slide the axle in while holding the wheel, refit the spacer and slide the axle through the brake caliper bracket, put the castle nut on, but don't tighten it yet.
Now fit and tighten the big allen bolt, fit and tighten the brake caliper and finally tighten the castle nut and refit the split pin (or p-clip).

Removal takes me about 10 mins, refit about 15.

If you are really struggling with getting the wheel back on the splines, I recommend bleeding on the bike.
I normally get mine on after bashing my knuckles so it may be easier if ya pricked yer thumb and dropped some blood on the bike.
All my bikes seem to have been Vampyres!  :o

Dont know why you need the wood under the centre stand the rear wheel came of my 2011 model easier than any other bike I have owned with the bike on its stand as normal with the cans and mud flaps etc in place unlike some bikes I have had

Sounds quite complicated!

I dunno if 2011 has a taller centrestand.
On my 2008 the wheel is difficult to get past the mudguard.
The 2" raise makes it easy.

As for it sounding complicated,.. I was detailing it.
It's dead simple and p**s easy and even a 10 thumbed northerner could do it!  ;) ;D ::)

Even in Todmorden where its a well known fact that some of the residents have twelve fingers and two heads they'd still find it difficult!!

No in all fairness it does sound very easy, its just that I have very little patience and I like to make things as easy as possible which normally involves getting someone else to do things for me. Lazy, Moi? How dare you?  ;D

We have some down here like that.
Everyone in Tillingham seems to have the same nose and ears and I hear rumours of webbed feet.  :o
Even they could remove the rear wheel.
Of course they would probably use a tractor and some chain!  ;D
