Not sure where to post this, if admin thinks it needs moving please do. I had the panniers stolen from my GTR this lunchtime. They're the (light) blue finish on my 2016 bike. They were empty apart from my old Triumph Trophy inner bags inside them. The bike was left in Walton Felixstowe for 15 minutes whilst I popped into Walton barbers for a haircut. Anyone who knows me would understand why it never takes long to buzz cut my (few) remaining hairs
What's sickening is that the panniers can only fit one type of machine. My gut feeling is that someone's had an off and will try and fit their locks from their panniers into my unblemished ones.
To replace them and the locks on my bike to restore it to a single key fits all is going to cost me £3k! Checked flea bay and Gumtree already. Feel free to PM me if you hear anything.
Thanks Guys
Steve

How peculiar.
Can't you clam off your insurance?
Very strange.
Yep, strange indeed.
Was any damage done to your bike during the theft or how were they removed ?
was it parked near any cctv. You never know it may have been spotted
Steve, I'm very sorry to read this. I would like to think that it wasn't another GTR owner who has carried out this despicable act, but whatever the reason it's the lowest of the low not only to steal in the first place, but to actually steal from another biker.
It has long been the case that the GTR panniers can be removed from the bike without a key, there is a technique which can be used and they will just come away totally intact causing no damage to bike or pannier. A flaw in the design which is well known to Kawasaki.
I trust this has been reported as necessary and hopefully something will come to light. I shall keep an eye on the obvious auction sites!
Best regards, Steve.
Thieving barstewards....it's shit when you can't leave your bike for 20 mins without some :asshole: thinking that it's ok to steal the panniers. I must admit I didn't know until this post that the boxes can be taken off, (even when locked) so easy....how is this???
Does anyone know of any hints or tips on what we can do to make it harder for these scumbags???...
I've just had a look on the bay, there are loads of lids, and a few adds for panniers will keep an eye open anyway..
Thanks Guys. Interesting Lonewolf that it is a well known flaw in the design. On the plus side I've emailed Kawasaki UK to let them know of the theft and have asked them to alert their dealer network in case someone should come in looking to repair their vandalised case. The real sickener is that to replace them and have to have seperate keys will cost over £1500 (£500 a carcass and £250 + VAT) If I have the locks on the bike including the starter switch replaced it's over £3000. I'm waiting for my insurers to come back to me after I put in the estimate from Orwells in Ipswich.
I'd urge everyone to be vigilent now I've found out the costs. When I see 'brand new' panniers on e bay minus the lock fitting being sold for £150 I have to ask what genuine seller would sell for that much under half price
Hopefully this link will work. The video has been around for years, it will demonstrate just how easily they can come off. I used to have some small metal clips which I bought off Ebay specifically sold as an anti theft device for GTR Panniers. They worked a treat. Once fitted there was no way the pannier could be removed without a key.

I have to wonder if the recall had been conducted on that particular bike ...the video is now 5 years old

There was a recall to rectify this situation?

My understanding is that the recall has nothing to do with the ability to take the panniers off without a key.
The recall related to a portion of the retaining lug breaking.
There is apparently (based on some googling around) a separate exploit that utilises the fact that the lock on the panniers is missing some basic anti tamper elements.

Not to my knowledge. The panniers could be removed on the pre 2010 models which I owned and the post 2010 models, which I also owned.

NB this is a separate issue to being able to remove the panniers without a key

Not to hand but if you're looking for instructions on " pinning" the panniers to prevent them flying off should the latches break (as opposed to some oik nicking them) then..

It seems all the photos from the link have been deleted, more than likely by a disgruntled Photobucket account holder who has been asked for money after many happy years of hosting direct from the site free of charge.
You took the words out of my mouth lol
I have pinned my panniers differently on both bikes I've had.
The current one I drilled through the bottom fixing ( just behind the foot rest )
And put some spring loaded pins in they can't come out on there own but will stop the panniers coming off.
The other one ( Bristol Bob now owns a member on here he may be able to put photographs on 👍 ).
I drilled a 1/8 hole through the panniers top brackets into and through the back of the panniers then put them back on the bike then from the inside using the holes as a guide I drilled back through the hole into the bike catch the bracket sits in.2 holes in each pannier then I aroldited some flat disc magnets by the 2 holes widen the holes to fit the steel rods you use ( I think mine was 4 mm )
Put the rod as far as it will go then cut bend into an L shape the magnets hold them in place and you need to open the panniers to remove the pins to remove the panniers. Also when not using the panniers leave the pins on the magnets sorry I never took any pictures hope this is easy to follow

Will try to remember to do later this evening
Hopefully photos attached showing all tat Pross did to secure the panniers to the bike.
Photo 520 shows the holes drilled in the pannier; also you can see the magnets attached.
Photo 521 you can now see the pins inserted and held by the magnet.
Photo 522 shows the hole drilled through the hanger on the bike.
Photo 523 - back of the pannier showing the hole drilled through the clip.

I never photographed the process and I am struggling to post photos since photobucket started charging 👍

i dont have the panniers fitted on my bike all the time,i only fit them when i'm going away biking holiday, this look's like an easy fix,i'm alway's looking to see if they are still attached to the bike.
Great idea, I'm off to the garage as I can't ride it may as well do something useful
you could possibly cut a slot in the mounting bolt so you could use a coin to undo it,
Can find some other threads here with same discussion and solutions
Can use the searching item right above
Didnt have any issues on my bike 2010
Good luck
The YouTube video solution is great idea.
I'm going to refine it a little by using these with a rubber washer (to add a little movement and waterproofing) and a large penny washer.

Being the recipient of Pross' older bike I can say that his solution seems to be much better than those suggested since. No need for any spanner, screwdriver or coin to remove a bolt that is a bit of a pain in the bum; rather than sliding in/out two pins which take up minimal space. Every one to their own though I guess.
Panniers pinned today nice and easy with detent pins
Sorry to jump on an old thread, but an important issue and one that I do not fully understand yet. I am not so concerned about the theft of my panniers, as they will not be on the bike overnight and in my hotel room. I am concerned about the stories of the panniers coming off at speed.
I have not seen many reports from later model GTR's of this happening, is this because the issue has been resolved or people are wise to the fact and have added additional security?.
I believe this was a problem with the Gen 1 model. I have never experienced it on my two gen 2 models. You can buy some hooks that fit over handle to make sure it does not undo. But on my last tour did not bother and all was well.
good to know, thank you PRD
Pins keep the panniers from launching like depth charges. They aren't anti-theft. There was a recall on the early models to change the holding mechanism to keep them from depth charging the panniers. Even after the recall works we've heard of panniers still depth charging depending on how loose they fit and how large a bump in the road is. This looseness makes it easier to steal them. One of our US members 'Zteve' came up with wire solution to eliminate the looseness of panniers to the bike. I used them on mine. Tightened them up nicely so very difficult to shake them out of the lock.
http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=24057.msg300359#msg300359
Jim, yes I had the wire system and if we are talking about the same system, they just slotted in under the pannier handles negating any drilling of bike parts. They worked very well if I recall.
That's the one. Very secure.
I watched the video however no indication of the solution. Also the link talks about the brackets to prevent the bags coming off but no pictures. Does anyone have a picture of the brackets?
The pins do not prevent the panniers from being stolen. In my case I removed a the upper bolt from the black locating brackets and drilled a hole in each pannier to align with the vacant thread and replaced the original screw with the same but longer and a washer, fixed from inside the pannier. The makes the cases thief proof (if there is such a thing) and semi permanent fixed. I use inner bags, so have no need to remove the actual panniers except for cleaning and maintenance. There are articles covering this on this forum and also the American concours and 1400gtr forum.
As per Chris, I've drilled a couple of little holes in the panniers and screwed them on using longer set screws and penny washers into the rear stays. Too many bikes in too small a garage for them to be left on but this has not created any problems.
Living in London and having everything that isn't screwed down (and some that is)stolen this has so far been a cheap and effective fix.
Sorry to hear about your panniers, I am so *ucked off with people stealing stuff that others have worked hard for.
Just reading through the forum and have jumped onto this thread. Very worrying to see one of the side cases flying down the road !
I'm not sure if the 2010 model has any issues but not taking any chances.
I've gone for the bolt through the case into the lower stay method.
Using these.

Bought 4, to have two spares.
I believe it was the pre 2010 model which was vulnerable.
08/09 models WERE affected.
Most have had the Recall done that replaced the faulty red mechanisms with the working orange ones.
All you need to do is make sure that the latch engages fully, but that applies to all year models.
There is a vulnerability with the lock that allows a knowledgable thief to open the lock without a key. There is also a mod to prevent this. I modified my locks several years ago. In the next few days I'll pull a lock out to show what needs to be done and post some photos. As far as the bags coming off while riding it has happened to all years. The number one cause is loose screws inside that hold the handle/lock assembly in place. Next is incorrectly attaching the bag to the bike.
okay if anyone was still looking for panniers guy i have got my bike from (blo
odbikes devon) has a few sets . might be usefull for someone
