Title: Non charging
Post by: trousersnake01 on November 24, 2017, 11:52:48 PM
Today on my ride home I noticed my low power light flashing on my heated grips and my ABS light on. I flicked over to the dash volt meter and it was saying battery 12.4 volts. Can some of you guys point me in the right direction. The ABS light has been on three days and hoping it is related.

Check the battery connections are clean and tight especially the earth to frame behind the battery cover  undo it and clean it up .At the end of the day you may just have a duff battery or maybe  a faulty rectifier ,Good luck

One of the fault warnings of the ABS unit is low voltage.  The service manual details the procedure to retrieve the fault code from the unit to identify the cause.  Once the cause of the fault warning is rectified, the light will go off but the fault(s) will be stored until cleared using the specified procedure.

If its showing 12.6 volts, then its not charging properly. Even with a duff battery you should be seeing > 13Volts.  Gonna have to test the reg/rec and possibly the generator

With a test meter connected between an earth point and battery positive, battery voltage should be a minimum of 12.6V
With the engine running at anything above tickover, you should be seeing 14.4 to 15V under all circumstances [headlights on/headlights disconnected/fans running if they cut in]
If you don't get these readings, then suspect the reg/rec unit.

To test the alternator, disconnect the multi plug at the reg/rec unit. There are three black wires and you need to test each pair using the test meter. With the meter set to 250V [ yes that is right], run the engine with pairs 1&2 connected by the test meter, then pairs 2&3, then pairs 1&3. With the engine running at approx. 4000rpm, you should have a reading of 56V or more. If yes the alternator is fine and the reg/rec is duff. If a lower voltage than 56V, the alternator is duff.

Before all that, and provided you have clean uncorroded connections, I will bet on the reg/rec being duff.
