Title: screen mod
Post by: ChrisB on June 24, 2017, 10:55:31 PM
After /6 years of ownership I have sorted my screen woes. I drilled 3 holes about an inch diameter along the lower half of the standard screen fitted with a laminar lip. After a week and /1100 miles in Scotland last week, I have no more wind noise or turbulence around my head. The wife is also happy on the back. Only downside is a slight whistling though the holes when doing silly speeds.

Can you post a pic or two of the mod, please?

interesting modification Chris, pictures would be good

I guess it's a similar principle to the vented screen on later model bikes

Laminar Lip is good BTW

:agree:   a couple of piccies would go down well...maybe the answer to all the problems with wind noise.

I didn't know for sure but my first issue was the useless screen fitted by Kawasaki, to which I fitted the laminar lip. This helped with wind noise but caused turbulence around mine and my wife's heads. So after many discussions in the pub we came to the conclusion that letting in more air under the screen should reduce the turbulence as demonstrated by Kawasaki on later models with the vent on the screen. So with drill in hand and a roll of masking tape to aid measuring, marking and prevention of slipping I went and drilled the holes as shown. Before the drilling we covered 1000 miles in Ireland in May and after the drilling an 1100 mile round trip to Scotland. So before and after comparisons have proved it works but there is a bit of a whistle coming through the holes at 60 mph or more. I will try and make the holes bigger or maybe just smooth the rough edges first to try and eliminate this.
I had nothing to lose as the standard screen didn't work and the Powerbronze screen I bought is not much better. I have tried 5 different helmets and I have not grown or shrunk much over the 7 years of owning the bike so I tried this.
This is the great thing about this forum. We can share knowledge and experiences.

i have a powerbronze tinted screen on mine, it could do with being 3'' to 4'' taller.

:agree:   It was a bold move, but as you say Chris you had nowt to lose really, maybe bevelling the edges of the holes will reduce the whistling noise  ?

There does seem to be a few of us who are not happy with the standard screen,  myself included.  I was hoping that buying the Vstream would be the answer for me, it's better the the standard one but still not tall enough for us.

I bought a s/h Puig visor off the Bay......but when I offered it up to the Vstream  before fixing, even the wife said it looked crap. I must admit it was the small one that Puig do.  I'm now thinking do we put up with what we have??? or do I go for a  MRA flip like this one before we go to France next week??....  https://www.bikehps.com/acatalog/MRA_X-creen_Motorcycle_Screen_Flip_Spoiler_Air_Deflector.html

I now some of you guys have MRA screens....as anyone used one of their flips???

Only an extra £35 over what you're looking at and you can get the complete screen with cats eyes in plus the adjustable lip.

I have one and find it excellent

NB they also do a bigger one

I've just been on their site looking at their Maxi screen Mikey and I'm thinking the same as you..  I know the screen with the flip is only the same overall height as the Vstream I have on,  but with the cats eyes making for better airflow and less wind noise it could be a good opition. All I have to do now is convince the better half and get one before next Thur.

Pity you're not a bit closer to Bolton as you could try before you buy.

Fair/warm weather I tend to ride with the screen fully down and the adjustable section just about halfway up

Wet/colder weather I leave the flip in the same position but just riase the screen

FyI I'm about 5/10/5'11" with a 32" inside leg

I'm 6' 2"  so with the flip up fully and the screen up it may be better than the one I have??  not forgetting  the cut outs as well.

How effective do you find the cut out's compared top a full screen without?

I'm 6'4" and had a Puig touring screen. Whilst better than the original, it wasn't perfect.

I recently acquired (thanks Charlie!) an MRA screen with adjustable lip. *Infinitely* better than the Puig! Plus - and I will be testing this theory in August - with the adjustable lip down, and the screen down, it is more like the height of the original: maximum airblast cooling in hot climates.

Cheers

Now I'm home I'm just about to start putting it together...thought I'd take a photo of the bits just for the guys to see what does come with the screen..

Just read the MRA screen spec's, it's say's it's 505mm with the flip fully raised, isn't that smaller than the original kawasaki screen?  :whistling:

The 'original' (2009) screen was smaller and at that time KHI offered a larger screen through the Kawasaki Accessory programme

Later model (I think 2010 onwards) model year had an improved/larger screen as standard, which was the same dimensions as the previous Accessory screen, but I can't remember what those dimensions are/were

I'm sure someone will be along with a tape measure any time now  :mfr_lol:

That's what they say... :mfr_lol:  and this one is the taller one....."Length/height with spoiler raised 610mm"

Off their web site....

Spoiler Dimensions

    Width of spoiler/aerofoil: 360 mm (14.2 inches)
Overall height of spoiler/aerofoil: 155 mm (6.1 inches)
Height in centre of spoiler/aerofoil: 128 mm (5.0 inches)

According to my ruler that 610mm is the same as the Vstream I have at the moment....but then there's the "cats eyes" to help, also the adjustable visor to alter air flow....so I have to wait and see.

OK...I fitted the MRA screen and had a run out the village....not impressed, so returned home and refitted the Vstream and took another run so that I could compare them side by side.

The Vstream won....hands down for me,  so that's the one for us, I think my height (6'2") doesn't help when I want to get out of the air flow.  My better half suggested taking the visor off the MRA and fixing to the VStream...which is not a bad idea, but the curve of the two screens are different so I don't think it would flex enough to stay on.

Anyone looking for a MRA touring screen???  :mfr_lol:

We have something like that on our site.

http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=914.0

However, maybe you guys could have a get together and swap screens.  I've thought about something similar over in the US but it hasn't got past the thinking stage.  Nothing happens.

The issue with screens is that it's so subjective to the rider size, saddle height, bar height, etc...   It's so darn difficult to find the one that's just right.  I've settled on the CB Ultra Tour Dome, but I have the stock 08 screen back on now as I'm working on selling the bike.  The stocker looks like a toy compared to that.

Also, larger screens may eventually affect the screen mechanism, although mine is still fine.

Had similar problems with the MRA screen, so I took a later, taller standard screen and fitted the MRA vario bit to that by drilling a couple of holes near the top.  Just returned from 1500 mioles in France.  No turbulance up to 70 mph.  I'm thinking that a small slot near the bottom will improve it further

Hi guys,
I am 6' 3" have the GTR 1400 with a tall screen fitted not the Kawasaki one but generic and had buffeting / turbulance issues from the screen just at top of helmet, saw this one on eBay - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Laminar-Lip-for-Kawasaki-GTR1400-GTR-1400-2010-on-screen-/322172957996?epid=1768803518&hash=item4b0301352c:m:mDOoipLwXlq8PO_HbV245lQ - some time back now, the guy said he couldn't be sure would fit or work so I went over to see him and after looking at one or two others decided that this was a good fit.
Once fitted tested it and have now had on for possibly 3 years and it is brilliant, no wind noise or buffeting, can ride with visor up even at more than motorway speed, even 90 mph plus no problem other than when rains as no wind to blow off the droplets so have to wipe or stick my head out to side.
Tried the MRA vario on ZZR 1100 was absolutely crap no improvement.

So here is food for thought. A friend of mine had similar issues with the screen on his Honda. Being an engineer by trade he thought and thought and came up with the idea of holes to increase airflow under the screen to reduce buffeting. He described it like an airplane wing idea. He put 2 quarter inch thick rubber tap washers under the 2 lower fixing screws in order to lift the bottom edge and increase airflow. It worked on his Honda so sometime next week I will try it on the GTR. Just for fun if nothing else and no cost.

I did the same about a year ago but made 4 x15mm spacers to move the intire screen forward works well on non standard tall screen and as I'm only 5'8 ,fully up I sit in still air I also made some 50mm taller blades for the hand deflectors  no cold or wet hands anymore ☺

It seems to for some of us....it's all down to the pressure on both sides of the screen. I never got to try before we set off for our two weeks....and I must admit I'm not sure if I want to drill holes in the Vstream...just in case.

I think the only way I'll be happy is to fix a visor or strip across the top of my screen???.

Drilling holes worked for us, but as said before I had nothing to lose and a spare screen should it all go wrong. Not got round to trying the rubber washers yet but I will.
Careful when drilling acrylics or plastic as the plastic may overheat and become discoloured.

I tried the GTR 1400 -MRA  X-Creen-Touring "XCTM" 2007-2014,better than the original screen, but still to low for my 6'2' height.Tried the original with a laminar lip, noisier and more buffecting than the MRA screen.
Fitted a Projekt D screen which is taller the original and the MRA GTR 1400 - X-Creen-Touring,Drilled and fitted the MRA screen spoiler, perfect.
Don't even need to put the screen right up to achieved the perfect balance between noise, wind protection and air flow to the the top of the shoei neo top air intake.Minimal  wind noise.
Outstanding protection with the screen right up in wet conditions.
