Title: Just back from trip. So much engine heat I want to sell !!
Post by: Stolichnaya on June 18, 2017, 08:58:13 PM
Hi All
I'm literally just back from 2500 miles in a week in Europe. Great time however the heat coming from the bike onto my knees is just painful!! I thought they'd cured this on the Gen 2!  Mine is a 2010 with (now) 35000 miles in. Serviced after every trip etc. Well cared for...
Yes it's been hot in Europe this last week. 32degreees but the sheer heat off the. Ike into my legs was awful.  I mean like crazy hot. So much so I don't want to take it again. I want to trade it for another bike.
The coolant was right. Level fine. Even riding at 85 it was showing 3 bars and the fans on regularly
Sort of spoiled the trip TBH.
Disgruntled GTR owner.
The rads seen better days I must admit but it's not leaking and has only a few lower curlered fins.
What do I do!!!

Can't say what to do but when I have travelled in extreme heat I have never had that much on my legs, yes the bars go to three and fan comes on but never that much heat, also done 30,000 miles.

Not sure what the answer is.

I was in heavy traffic in Belfast today stop start, stop start, you know the kind of traffic that I mean, the bikes temp gauge showed 28c the cooling fan was running and the heat onto my legs was considerable even with my trouser vents open it just one of those things (that isn't a frequent event).

I cant suggest what you should do Stoli, it's really up to you ~~~ I wouldn't have thought the GTR is any worse than other bikes TBH.

Having had a fair share of bikes I can say Ive never had this kind of heat. Like wanting to get off heat.
I kept putting my hands down to just above my knee and it was like a hair dryer in full... constantly.
My one thing I could mention... I recently put those wind deflectors on that bolt to the side fairing. The clear L shaped Ines
Could this be causing a vortex?  Anyway one else have them?
Putting legs down for a stretch was agony with heat
Even my wife could feel it on the back!!
I cannot stress how much hot air was over both of us
Very serious as I'm at the point of looking for another bike for next years tour

I had those deflectors on my 2010 GTR, however I dont think I was ever in the kind of high temperatures that you experienced

There is something wrong with that bike I have been in 35 plus and not experienced this problem.

I think you will find most bikes with a full fairing are the same, you just notice it more in extreme heat , I had a zzr11 that I went out on in 30 degree heat and nearly got boiled , it's not very often that we ride in very hot conditions, that's why all the gold wing and harly owners ride in shorts and t shirts when abroad , works the other way when it's colder you can ride more comfortable as the wind is kept of you ,,  try a naked bike ,,,  :biker3:

Mechanically it's perfect. 2576 miles in a week to Italy and back... I think if it were not well it would have gone pop.

Take the deflectors off and try again !

Mines an 08 Plate and exactly as the OP described.
I even took the Touring Screen off to allow more air flow, mine seems hotter on the Left.
I guess its exaggerated in this Heat, but yesterday did 200 Miles and it was very sticky

Gotta be the deflectors. We were in France last year high 30's with no probs, yes it was hot in traffic but once moving it was fine.

It will feel worse as the radiator fans are blowing hot air when the bike is stationary.
It should feel a bit better when the bike is moving and you have relatively cooler air passing your legs.

08 has different side panels which I think can be removed to change cooling

Mines a 2011 bike, never experienced any problem like that and we rode in very hot condition's last year in Spain, especially busy and slow in some of the city's we stayed in.

Hmmm. Ok. Could it be the rad hasvtoo many knackered fins and not letting air thru..?
It foes look like it's seen better days

If you mean the baffles just behind the fins I believe they are there to help deflect some of the heat away.

If removed they allow more heat to come back onto the rider for winter riding.

At least thats the way I think they work :)

Not sure i understand your reply - Baffles??  do you have a picture of what you mean?  mine just has a radiator with fans on the back.
By "fins" i mean the actual Fins of the Rad.  ive looked at a few on eBay (used ones) so i could maybe replace mine but those for sale are much worse than mine already!!!
The lower portion of my Rad does have some bent fins but up top its fine....

I think the way forward is to take off the wind deflectors and try it....

As Mikey says,  there are some external removable panels (one each side) to the rear of the side panel fins which can be removed in winter

Just thinking Stoli, your bike is a later model so does not have these removable panels which were a feature on earlier model GTRs

I have attached a picture of my 2008 bike which shows the panels just in front of the riders knees/legs they look like a reversed number 7  ...

AHHH i see, those panels.  right.  yeah mine is a 2010 ver.  i thought for a minute that mine had something missing!
i will remove the little air deflector things as they may well just be  causing a vortex...

Stoli, were you riding with the screen all the way down?
Title: Re: Just back from trip. So much engine heat I want to sell !!
Post by: Stolichnaya on June 22, 2017, 07:32:47 AM
About half way up for the screen. I have a Calsci XL with a laminar lip for long range as it's best for no wind noise in the lid. I've an MRA back on now

I've removed the side air deflectors too. Just need to try and see. I'm fairly confident that they caused a vortex.

With the screen all the way down, it blocks the airflow coming over the front fairing that cools your shins.   The heat you are describing seems to be abnormal considering the 10+ bikes were designed to minimize the heat coming from the 08/09s.

I have also been to Europe in some very hot times and I too thought the heat from the fairing vents was a bit much. I have heard other riders complain but have never thought it that bad enough to change the bike.
