I saw in my right mirror something flick backwards - I thought it was something in the carriageway that I hadn't seen then when I got to work I put two and two together.
It's very annoying - those boxes ain't cheap.

This will be little consolation, but the box is a Givi E470 and you an buy replacement covers from £23.99 (from intobikes.co.uk)
You can get the matt black one and get it resprayed to match your bike? Just a thought.
