Title: Help needed from a Newbie
Post by: BruLan on May 19, 2017, 09:36:13 AM
Be gentle with me if all these questions are answered elsewhere !
I've just moved from a VFR800 which was completely sorted to an 08 Plate GTR1400 and need to start learning about them so help with any of the following questions would be appreciated.
Can a Tank Bag Ring be fitted for a Givi Tank Bag ? If so whats the Part and where can I get one ?
Are Internal Pannier Bags available ? I have some Givi ones but the Kawa are larger.
Whats the most popular Sat Nav Mount the Kawasaki one or RAM ?
Thanks in advance
Best wishes Bruce

Morning Bru,
This is only from experience,
Givi Tank Lock ring, I tried and it appears not an option with the '08 (as is mine), due to the height and distance of the tank pocket in front of the filler cap!
I went the option of Baglux cover and bag, only fitted when on hols, 10 minute job for the cover.
Inner bags, use the ones that I had for my 1200GS, budget brand but lasted for 4 tours now and do the job superbly, heres the link for the GTR:-

Sat Nav, I went the original route, Kawasaki part between the bars, Cradely sorted this at a fair price, only drawback is can catch the sun.
Hope this helps.

Yep, the gen2 (2011 on) doesn't have the pocket in front of the filler, so has clearance for the ring / mount, has pockets in the fairing instead.
I did make some spacers to raise the ring to clear the pocket, looks pig ugly!
Might be worth speaking to a Givi dealer and confirm, Chells in Stafford are where I get all my Givi stuff from, always do a good deal, poss. worth a call to confirm.

The tanks are the same, but the Gen2 GTR has a "glove box" in the side panel next to the tank, and an almost flat plastic cover where your "glove box" is.

I had exactly the same issue as you. As Dick said, Baglux/Bagster cover and tank bag is the way to go. (Plus it keeps the tank scratch free when adding/removing the tank bag.)

As for sat-nav, that's all personal preference. I got sick of the glare and not being able to see it over the tank bag on previous bikes. My sat-nav is now on a Ram mount on the clutch lever bolts. That means I can prod at it whilst cruising

Cheers

:agree: Also, apart from the glare, I found I had to physically look too low down to see the screen, it felt less safe somehow...

One option is remove the tank pocket when you are using the bag?
Givi lock / bag would probably fit, but again look pig ugly when bag off!
One day I'll have a Gen 2 and won't have the issue! :undecided:

I purchased the touratech  lockable one for my garmin 660 and it fixed to the Kawasaki base. They do them for various satnavs

It stops the opportunist chancer when filling up .

Is it possible to fit the later Tank Cover in place of the standard Glovebox on the early Model ?
If thats an option it solves the problem

Yes, if you remove the "glove box" and fit a plastic "plate" from a Gen2 GTR, it'll fit just fine

You can get a cover for your bike for just over £100 on eBay. For example item no. 222509984699

In Principle correct, HOWEVER and its a Biggie the bracket that teh Cover bolts onto differs between the two models and  the hole centres for the covers are wrong.
I was lucky and got a bracket, but as the Glovebox is more useful I just swap them over when I need a Tank bag.
I will post some pics next time I swap it.

I'm in two minds about these.

On the one hand they do their job on the other hand they (almost) scream " look at me I'm something expensive worth an extra lock"

That said for the last 10 years or so of sat nav use about the only time they've come off the bike is for updates or to be used in a car
