Title: trickle charging
Post by: Therenback on July 03, 2011, 11:39:23 AM
on previous bikes (more basic than GTR) i attached permanent optimate lead to regularly condition battery. does anyone know if this is possible to do or should battery be disconnected to avoid damaging circuits ??

Nope! Just connect Optimizer as you normally would do.....  It can be a bit tricky to get
wires placed neatly and securely because the battery cover is very tight. I have pulled the wires off the right side - at the lower cowl ....

Optimate just as any other bike!

Like has been said - tight to get into - route so it pops out inside right fairing near knee!

ta for that, when removed panel i couldn't spot a clear or easy route for lead, in past always ran it back to pillion peg mount an cable tied off.

Are you planning to use Optimate just out of habit, because you have one and you've used it on previous bikes, or is your current GTR battery unpredictable without the assistance of an Optimate?

To be fair Steve, I've used them on the last 3 bikes, bought it when my Blackbird battery was 'dead' - took a punt, put it on charge and it resurected it!

Advantage is that it keeps the battery in tip-top condition always topped up and never over-charged.

Not a 'habit' just common sense

I've still got mine mounted on the garage wall from when I had the CB1300, never used it on the GTR yet but if everyone says its a good idea to use it then I'll look at getting it connected up to the GTR.

I've only had to charge my battery once, and that was when I left the stupid heated clothing indicator LED on. Its now ignition switched to a fuseblock.

Prior to that one incident, no reason to trickle charge it as it was used throughout the year. Only when it snows is the bike really parked up

Likewise, my GTR1000 lives on the trickle charger but as the 1400 is used every weekday there is not much need to charge it.
When it was parked most of the time it also lived on a trickle charger.
I fitted a second accessory (cigarette lighter) socket on the left fairing inner which is unswitched and so can be used to charge the bike.

Hi Boomer
I always thought there should be an unswitched socket in the fairing - where did you tap into the unswitched supply

Please do not say under the seat

Then I won't. It's actually much worse than that.
I fitted an Aux Fuse Box. It connected an additional line to the battery + terminal and ran a 40A rated wire with 30A inline fuse to just under the right side inner fairing where I fitted the fusebox. This has 4 feeds that I can fuse how I want. One runs my cigarette socket (10A), one runs my horns (15A) via a relay, and the other 2 are available for future farkles.

42" 3D TV and Sky+ Box obviously!  ;D

I am considering some heated grips for the winter and possibly some spotlights.

Thanks for telling me what I didn't want to hear - may be something I'll do at a later date or more likely I'll just not bother

Hi everyone, I want to fit a permanent lead and have heard how tight the battery cover is, I'm hopeless at mechanics although I did manage to change the battery on my ZX12R. Can someone take a look at this link and tell me if I'll get this lead onto the battery Ok with the in line fuse

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001O1WOOY/ref=s9_simh_bw_p263_d0_g263_i1?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-5&pf_rd_r=0PY1EP713PWCWC10HM52&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=254702267&pf_rd_i=248877031

Thanks, oh and if anyone had photo's of the battery removal I'd appreciate a look

thanks, Donald

Yes, should fit fine. I have the same on my bike.
Battery removal isn't that hard - just fiddly

dont knolw if this is possikble on the gtr,but will the battery not charge if you put the trickle charge in through the auxillary 12 volt socket  already provided on the bike ?????.

Nope, that socket is switched so when the ignition is off it is not connected to the battery.
You could rewire the existing socket but I'm not keen on the location of it anyways.
My new one is in the left inner fairing piece right where it goes vertical.

Can you charge the bike by removing the small panel on the right hand side and simply connect a couple of croc clips to the terminals inside where your supposed to be able to jump start it?

You could, but its hassle. The battery still has to come out - there is no direct access to just clip onto the terminals

From memory:

1. Remove fairing panel covering battery
2. Remove rubber band that goes around battery by unclipping
3. Gently pull battery out. Cover on top of battery will also slide out. Remember the way the cover is orientated
4. Undo terminal screws and install battery tender leads. Watch out here. Screwing the terminal screws back in can be a pain. They screw into a bolt which has a tendency to drop. You may have to prop the bolt up with a screwdriver when tightening

Optimate 4 is what I used, like Mr Wolf, on my old CB1300 and they are excellent..... used to have it plugged in 90% of the time ... not on a day to day commuting week but if I was off for a few days, especially in the winter I would connect it up and will do so again for the Gtr ... which incidentally is going in for an 8000 mile service next week and they are going to "live " the jack plug on the right side for that very purpose ...... as has been said preiously I don't want one of those " oh Shit " moments  ;D

hi just ordered an optimate, another suggestion but don't know if this is practable.access to the positive terminal is staight forward,so can you get away with connecting the postive, then attatching the negative to the ground bolt, this would be a doddle.and save pulling out the battery, the just route the plug for the optimiser connection
