Title: Optimate 3
Post by: Kylinski on May 08, 2017, 09:20:58 AM
Hi all

After a ride yesterday, I hooked the bike up to the Optimate 3.

Switched the power on. No lights on the right hand side. Green power light is on and that's it!

I checked the connections several times, ( I use a 2 metre Optimate extension cable ), everything appears to be fine there.

If I switch the power on and off quickly, the lights on right do appear momentarily, so the lights do work.

Has my Optimate finally died after 7 yrs use?

Just a word of warning.
My charger packed up after a few years of use.
And I replaced with an oxford oximiser 900 first 10 months no issues then sudden stopped charging but continued its routine testing and flattened the battery  :censored:.
Had it replaced FOC under the 2 year warranty and this one again so far so good.
I did some research and it appears the oxford one does not like damp condition  :nono: which I'm afraid is most garages or sheds  so just be aware

I'll check the connections again, see if the lead from the battery is still powering my accessories. If there's no power to them, then the terminals may have worked lose or broken.

If my accessories are receiving power, it will mean the charger is naffed!

It may be the 2.5m extension lead, I'll bypass that to eliminate that.

Check the internal pins in both male and female end, mine have "stretched) and were not making good contact. Careful manipulation with small needle nose pliers fixed that. also common problem(for me) forget to unplug the Optimate before moving the bike(s) resulting in pulled cables, ensure the wires are still attached to the terminals (you live, you learn !!! Or you read and try to learn from others)

Sorted!

It was as you suggested Conman, the female pins had splayed outward on my extension lead. I bypassed the extension lead and the charger worked fine.

A little crimp with the long nosed pliers fixed it.

And silly me, my charger is not an Optimate 3, it's a Hein Gericke Jonnie. (Remember them?)

Anyway, thanks Conman.
