Title: Channel tunnel crossing
Post by: nightrider on May 07, 2017, 05:05:35 PM
Going to France in June and it will be £36 to cross from our side ,but not sure what day I will be coming back as the flexi ticket is £107  can you just book on their side for a cheaper price when I get there to the port , or is it not as easy as that ,,

You can book from France - or anywhere obviously - but every time Iv'e checked its much more expensive.
A couple of years ago I had terrible weather on a euro tour so thought I would return a day earlier and cancel my hotel for the night. They wanted over €100 at the toll booth for a single ticket - or to change my existing ticket!!!

Obviously I turned around and went back to my hotel for the night.

my experience with the chunnel has always been early bookings are cheapest , plus if you do leave it you may well turn up and no spaces for several hours .

we took a van and trailer through last year and missed our slot ( too late ) the ticket was originally £190 , we lost that and had to buy a ticket on the spot for £400 as it was last minute booking.

Buy a FLEXIBLE ticket for a later slot than you think , if you turn up early they will always let you board early and if you are late you have more flexy time on your side

+1   :agree:  We're off in July through the chunnel, we always use it as the wife gets sea sick on the ferries.  It's cheaper to book & pay up front....if you can sort out a return date it would be so much easier for you....

I've used the Tunnel since it opened...the whole family get seasick just looking at ferry brochures! We've paid £85.00 per bike (return) for our trip to Coupe De Moto Legende at the end of May. On many occasions I've turned up early for a crossing (in one case two days early, due to appalling weather) and always been loaded on the next train at no extra cost.

A few words of warning though - in recent times there have often been severe delays (recently we were held up for 6.5 hours) due to train breakdowns, intruders on the lines etc. A conversation with someone working there the last time revealed that they were suffering up to eight delays per day as an average then. Hopefully a little better now!

I got there last year in good time to come home ,but they was running a hour behind ,then we all got on the train 20 min wait ,to hear a announcement that the train had broke down every body off another wait and all on the next train ,2 hours past my allotted time , still all good fun ,  :biker3:

Used it twice last year on the bike and both times perfect no delays and going out last July on the 2.0am train we were the only bike on it !

I seem to recall paying more and buying a VIP ticket (fast track? or whatever it was called). When we arrived to come back, they had horrible delays and trains cancelled, however, due to having the VIP ticket we were first onboard the next available train.

Not sure what it cost but it was worth every penny!

(just checked, it was a FlexiPlus ticket for the return - standard outbound)
