Title: Boring LCD display
Post by: Kylinski on April 21, 2017, 06:08:17 PM
Let's face it, the LCD display on the GTR is dated and a bit rubbish!

I've been watching Bike World on Sky (forget which channel) with various bike reviews.

Colour screens, lots of pretty lights, it's like being on board the Enterprise with some bikes!

What do we get? Bland black on white, hard to read info on a screen that's way too small.

I want BIG and I want COLOUR! Oh, and a digital speedo with BIG numbers!

I like plain and simple.
If it's too complicated then it gets hard to read, especially when just glancing at it.
The only things I'd change are a bigger time clock and a screen that doesn't disappear when getting low on fuel.
I still want to know how many miles range I have left even at low fuel level, actually especially at low fuel level!

You can cancel the warning when low on fuel I believe.

To cancel the display currently shown, hold down top button between clocks and press lower button. release both buttons and the current display is cancelled and a big red idiot light comes on. it all resets when ignition is switched off so you may have to repeat above,

I don't get the need for flashing lights and coloured over complicated displays on a dash. I like it pure and simple, specially when travelling quickly I only want to see what I need to know. SAAB cars designed a dash display on the 900 model which illuminated only on a need to know basis rather than confuse the driver with unnecessary displays. this came from the aircraft division and it worked well. EG the fuel guage only lit up when it reached down to quarter full, temp guage was only visible when things began to get towards HOT. In these days of rev limiters and computer controlled vehicles we don't even need a rev counter, be honest how many times do you actually use it.

Not easy when you're going along and want to know how many miles left before you run out!

I prefer analogue clocks to digital ones.  All I need to do is a half glance down to get an idea of where the needles are.  12 o'clock on the rev counter and its pulling well.  2 o'clock and its time to change up!.  Same with the speedo.  I don't need precise speeds, but about 11.00 onwards is making nice progress!!

Whilst that cancels the Low Fuel Mesage and puts the red light on the range function is still disabled by design

I don't understand why in 2017 the user Interface (UI) can't be modified to suit requirements.

In a world of IoT's, HTML5 and the web I find the display lacking.

It has a tiny gear indicator for example, an option for a large gear indicator would be easy and for me useful, a custom layout would be much better.

Surely it cant be beyond the wit of these designers to sort it out.   It doesn't need colour, as previously mentioned something else to break, but the layout is a bit daft as it stands.

Its like having an iWatch where you cant actually mod the watch screen...oh...doh..

You have to remember that this display came out 10 years ago.  Probably a good 2 years before that in development and lastly, the bike is being phased out

It had already occurred to me that we are not far off the day when you could clip in something like an i-Pad mini between your bars and basically customise your own display.

Password protection would also add another layer of security to your bike if it was linked to the immobiliser.

Any budding software developers out there?

Certainly for cars you can get OBDC links/Conectors and Apps to connect to iOS & Android so not a far step to having a custom display.

Split screen and have integral sat nav as well (potentially)
