Title: flat battery/bump start.
Post by: tapps on April 07, 2017, 06:27:10 PM
i went to visit my riding buddy today, his entrance to his driveway is on a camber & it run's down hill.i original parked up, switched it off then had thought's of it rolling forward.i then turned the knob to find 1st gear & silly me forgot to turn the IGNITION OFF !!!! after about 1 hour 20 minute's i returned to see a message pulsating on the display (LOW BATTERY) it wouldn't start, my mate tried to bump start me,it wasn't having any of it, the rear wheel simply locked up,i called the dealership where it as MOT'd today if it's ok to jump start it from a car, he said it'll be ok, but don't run the car while doing so, i couldn't believe how quick the battery drained, i found the toolkit on the bike to be just about useless.

A kick start would be useful.

has anybody ever used/got experience of one of the pocket sized jump starters such as these (https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/pocket-sized-jump-starters/)?

Did you try bumping it in 1st gear ?
If so I am not surprised the rear wheel locked up, 2nd gear is the norm IME for bump starting a bike.

I bought one of these last year on offer it arrived fully charged and I just let it sit in the box.
When I took my battery of to test and charge.
I tried it just connected to the leads with the clips supplied it st rated the bike straight away 👌.
It's supposed to be powerful to start a 2.5 ltr petrol car engine.

Here is a link to the one I bought it sits in my top box on trips with my compressor and puncture kit

I have used one of those cheap from Aldi starter booster leads which connects cig lighter to cig lighter and it worked fine.
You should never bump start or tow start a vehicle which has a cat converter fitted cos when she finally fires up the unburnt fuel in the exhaust will ignite and destroy the chemicals in the CAT. Known affectionately as cooking the cat.

I've got a similar battery pack, just a little bigger than a phone and can start my van no problem

i've just started the gtr up since i left the ignition on & flattened the battery, the voltage reading on the screen on start up was 12.8V,after a few second's it went up to 14.3V,does the 12.8V seem ok,would this be a good all round reading.i hope i've not damaged the battery.
